Australian Rugby Union (ARU) chief executive John O'Neill has revealed he will stand down from his post at the end of his contract in two years.
In the wake of the Wallabies' semi-final elimination at the World Cup, O'Neill says he will not continue on beyond the end of 2013, six months after the British and Irish Lions tour Australia.
It will be the second time O'Neill will move on from the role after leaving the ARU in 2004 and then guiding the operations of Football Federation Australia.
O'Neill and the ARU board had controversially recontracted Wallabies coach Robbie Deans for a further two years before the World Cup, so the New Zealander could take his young side through to the Lions tour.
With calls coming for successful Queensland Reds coach Ewen McKenzie to take the reins, and Deans indicating he wants to remain at the helm, O'Neill absolved himself from the decision-making process.
He says there is a succession plan in place but it is for his own successor, likely to be anointed earlier in 2013, to choose to activate.
"That won't be my call," O'Neill said.
"My contract is up at the end of 2013 and it will not be a decision that will involve me.
"If I'd left as originally intended, 30 June next year, I would not have involved myself in Robbie's extension - that was in agreement with the board.
"The board that is in situ for 2013 will be making those calls and I'll be preparing to ride off, probably much to the relief of some people, into the sunset and it would be inappropriate for me to be involved in that."
Good timing from JON - he hasn't been terrible, but it's time to take another look at the whole thing. Also - announcing it now forestalls people trying to get rid of you.

This comment is the one that caught my attention:
"He says there is a succession plan in place but it is for his own successor, likely to be anointed earlier in 2013, to choose to activate."
Before Robbie's comments yesterday that he wants to stay on to the 2015 RWC, the succession could only involve one of two people, couldn't it -Link or Nucifora?
Does this comment suggest that Nucifora is the plan, hence his elevation to a coaching role now in anticipation of the succession plan, which may be out the window now if Robbie can get the Wallabies to perform in 2012/13 and seeks another extension.
David Nucifora, coaching coordinator and head of Australian Rugby's High Performance Team, will figure in a full review of the World Cup campaign, along with the members of the ARU board, including former Wallabies Brett Robinson, Michael Hawker, Mark Connors and John Eales.
What a piss weak cop out. JON, you didn't leave as originally intended and hence you were a major f*cking part of the decision to extend Robbie's contract. Don't pretend you have no role to play in this. I know you're never going to admit you f*cked up but don't think the australia public is so stupid we won't see through your bullshit attempts to pass the buck.
Totally agree. Put a poll on here to see how many want JON and Deans to stay on for two more weeks let alone two years. If there's an overwhelming majority that they get punted, get one of those facebook peoples revolution sites going to get 1 million signatures to tell them to fuck right off now.
