Australian Rugby Union (ARU) chief executive John O'Neill has revealed he will stand down from his post at the end of his contract in two years.

In the wake of the Wallabies' semi-final elimination at the World Cup, O'Neill says he will not continue on beyond the end of 2013, six months after the British and Irish Lions tour Australia.

It will be the second time O'Neill will move on from the role after leaving the ARU in 2004 and then guiding the operations of Football Federation Australia.

O'Neill and the ARU board had controversially recontracted Wallabies coach Robbie Deans for a further two years before the World Cup, so the New Zealander could take his young side through to the Lions tour.

With calls coming for successful Queensland Reds coach Ewen McKenzie to take the reins, and Deans indicating he wants to remain at the helm, O'Neill absolved himself from the decision-making process.

He says there is a succession plan in place but it is for his own successor, likely to be anointed earlier in 2013, to choose to activate.

"That won't be my call," O'Neill said.

"My contract is up at the end of 2013 and it will not be a decision that will involve me.

"If I'd left as originally intended, 30 June next year, I would not have involved myself in Robbie's extension - that was in agreement with the board.

"The board that is in situ for 2013 will be making those calls and I'll be preparing to ride off, probably much to the relief of some people, into the sunset and it would be inappropriate for me to be involved in that."

Good timing from JON - he hasn't been terrible, but it's time to take another look at the whole thing. Also - announcing it now forestalls people trying to get rid of you.

JON is great at tactics. Perhaps it is time for him to coach, the Wallabies might at least get a game plan for a change.

Good timing in more ways than one: someone else will have the headache of working out who should replace Deans. Makes Deans' reappointment look pretty cynical.....

What a piss weak cop out. JON, you didn't leave as originally intended and hence you were a major f*cking part of the decision to extend Robbie's contract. Don't pretend you have no role to play in this. I know you're never going to admit you f*cked up but don't think the australia public is so stupid we won't see through your bullshit attempts to pass the buck.

LOL! This is all smoke and mirrors.

JO'N said when Deans' shameful - and now infamous - 2 year extension was announced earlier this year that he JO'N would also be granted to 2-year extension as ARU CEO (funny that). (The ARU have never issued a clear, robust justification of these two extraordinary matched-up extensions, granted irrespective of previously stated KPIs for 2011.) The clear implication was made then that this would be his last extension as ARU CEO. So 'announcing' today that he'd seek no more extensions is both zero new data yet obviously some kind of manipulative manoeuvre to manage issues and tensions within the ARU board and the usual cunning media diffusion to imply some minute atonement for the substandard Wallaby RWC 2011.

The whole notion also announced today that 'I will not be involved in RD's successor' is very odd in that if JO'N is to be ARU CEO through December 2013 (as he's dated it today), when precisely is Dean's 2 year extension to end? If the BIL tour ends say July 2013, surely the ARU would want Deans' successor appointed and announced prior to that date and to take over no later than that point (with only 2 more years then to RWC 2015, and note Deans has now said he'd like to stay on through RWC 2015). That means Deans' successor candidates would need to be assessed and a new head coach announced by say May 2013, 8 months before JO'N's final departure date. So, on all we know now, it's hard in any practical sense to see how JO'N will not be involved in this successor-identifying process.

I'll bet $100 today that by early 2013, all these machinations will be very different; today's 'announcement' by JO'N was zero new substance, 100% a form of politics within the complex ARU planetary system that we can only speculate about.

This comment is the one that caught my attention:

"He says there is a succession plan in place but it is for his own successor, likely to be anointed earlier in 2013, to choose to activate."

Before Robbie's comments yesterday that he wants to stay on to the 2015 RWC, the succession could only involve one of two people, couldn't it -Link or Nucifora?

Does this comment suggest that Nucifora is the plan, hence his elevation to a coaching role now in anticipation of the succession plan, which may be out the window now if Robbie can get the Wallabies to perform in 2012/13 and seeks another extension.

Important note regarding JON's 2 year extension, NSWRU, VRU and Rugby WA all opposed it. The QRU wouldn't obviously bite the hand that feeds, likewise for the other unions.

I remember when he attended a Weary Dunlop lunch in July last year, and copped a fair few jeers.

Scott, if all this keystone cops 'complex extensions and mysterious succession plans and then possibly more extensions' was not so damn serious for the future of Australian rugby, frankly it'd all be just laughable.

Think that he is doing no good for Australian rugby anymore. He is in large part why Australian rugby is not likedelsewhere . He plays hardball- and that's ok. But the time for that is now over. time to go. would like to see him try coaching! Would soon be in apickle worse that Lievremont's woes

Noticing this little gem in today's media reports re JON's 'announcement that wasn't one':

David Nucifora, coaching coordinator and head of Australian Rugby's High Performance Team, will figure in a full review of the World Cup campaign, along with the members of the ARU board, including former Wallabies Brett Robinson, Michael Hawker, Mark Connors and John Eales.

Marvellous. Nuci will be evaluating himself, along with others, of course.

Brings a whole new perspective to independence in performance reviews and KPI marking.

I would hope those named board members bear in mind their own integrity is on the line with this "review". I would be disappointed in the extreme if the review finds that all was great except we had unfortunate injuries prior to and during the RWC.

He isn't passing the buck, he is saying he signed him. He six saying if he didn't stay on he wouldn't have been involved.

You would have thought that a review of the entire four years under the faux messiah would be more appropriate than looking at 6 games.

This is one of the most appalling pieces of boardroom bastardry you'd ever want to see. JON has totally circled the wagons and prevented any real review of what has gone on.
  1. David Nucifora to critique his own appalling forwards coaching.
  2. All the results of the review hidden behind board secrecy provisions.
  3. All the key decisions have been made before the review even starts.
  4. In true boardroom style, some scapegoats will have to be found. Expect Phil Blake, the only coach who did his job, to be the first casualty.
The only hope is for the rugby community in the states to rise up in rebellion and throw the bastards out.

Totally agree. Put a poll on here to see how many want JON and Deans to stay on for two more weeks let alone two years. If there's an overwhelming majority that they get punted, get one of those facebook peoples revolution sites going to get 1 million signatures to tell them to fuck right off now.
