That was the only article I could find also. However, considering that JO'N as acting chairman will well and truly have his hands full with Crown and Genting, for the good of Australian rugby he must step down from the ARU. This is a point that RH has already alluded to. Either one or the other, you can't have both Johnny boy.

Read it again ".....the Echo Entertainment board in one brilliant fell swoop nullified his complaints by ejecting Story and replacing him with John O'Neill, delivering a hollow victory for Packer...."

My big concern out of this is the connection of rugby in this country with a gambling business. (All be it unspoken and informal. ) We don't want to go here! Do we? Really?

JON is going to go out at the end of next year on a financial high, he is cutting playing costs and next year the Lions bring in a truck load of money

As for being chairman of Echo, meh, just how many board meetings are there? one a month for 3-4 hours at best?

He is already going to the meetings as a board member. don't see a problem

TRB, just the substantial new capital raising they've announced today coupled with their obviously embattled state is by definition a large time commitment for any public company chairman, be that chairman executive or non-executive in standing. Unless JO'N hands over to a new chairman very quickly - which looks most unlikely - this is why it's quite extraordinary that the ARU board permits this distraction for/by its high profile CEO and right bang in the middle of the rugby season and when just last year JO'N affirmed that the Wallabies must be aiming to win the BC this year and quickly move to IRB No 1 world ranked team.

Yeah, but John Story was the Chairman, Larry Mullin is the CEO (he'll be on his way out too).

Regardless, this is still a move that bodes ill for the governance of the game.

If we were going to ask for all executive/corporate managers who sit on multiple boards to resign, Australia would end up with zero captains of industry.

Nothing to see here folks.

Australian Rugby's connection with gambling looks to be formal. During the Wallabies vs Wales 1st Test match on the FTA broadcast, there were ads for an online bookie which promoted that they were an Official Partner of the Wallabies. I couldn't find confirmation on the ARU website. However, the Wallabies Facebook page shares a photo from the bookie's Facebook page and the Wallabies page also likes the bookie's page. Very irresponsible when you consider how many minors would visit the page.

With the reported effects of problem gambling in Australia, it is disappointing that the ARU has seen fit to get in bed with gambling interests.

I don't really agree with this. I'm not on the board of any companies (and the day that I am I advise you all not to invest in those companies), but by my reckoning there's a difference between being on a board as a rubber stamp and being on a board in an executive capacity. I can't think of too many examples of CEOs/Chair-people who hold those positions in two equivalently sized organisations.

Such roles would be prioritised, and this move means that the ARU gig is no longer going to be job #1. JO'N shouldn't be criticised for it, but it's not unreasonable to say the ARU might better serve its interests by looking elsewhere for a CEO.
