In the 9 years of the JE Medal, it's gone to the openside flanker 4 times. I kind of think rugby needs to move away from an openside dominated game. I hope Reid or Smith (Juan) wins the Man of the Year Award or whatever the IRB call it. Less fetching and more thumping is what rugby needs.
I'd say it's testament to the quality of some of our flankers. We probably had 2 of arguably the 3 best opensides going around in Smith and Waugh for a while there, and this year Pocock has been obviously the most outstanding performer. In years where people like Chris Latham stood up, they won it. I also think a player poll might be slightly biased towards openside flankers because of their ridiculous workrate, but if you think about just how well the flankers who win it are playing I can't object.
