16 As Game: Pats v Kinross

Pats 13 - Kinross 5. A tough game, Pats penalty kicks proved to be difference between the two teams.
Pius 16A 22 - Gregs 16A 14. (5-7 to Gregs yet half time)
12-14 to Gregs with about 10 mins to go, Pius finished stronger with a penalty and well worked converted try to Matt Kennedy from a back line move.

Oakhill lift to beat Augustines.

Oakhill were greeted by a tunnel of students that snaked across the field for about 60 metres. A slow walk through the tunnel gave the team needed inspiration and energy to meet the Augustines side that looked strong and powerful. Both teams huddle before a huge crowd to find the last words to get them fired up for the battle. A battle it was.

Around 5 minutes in and Augustines spread the ball wide to #15 Luke Lough who had enough pace and power to plant the ball in the corner from about 35 metres out. The conversion was missed and Augustines lead 5 nil. Oakhill hit back soon after a short side move and good work from #4 Will Brush and #11 Bart Piccone, exchanging passes and #Brush was over!. Goddard calmly slotted the conversion and Oakhill led 7-5.

The quick reply from Oakhill had shocked the Augustines team and a high kick off restarting play taken by the try scorer and he was smashed. From this point both forward packs seem to hit harder in each tackle thorughout the game. Soon after #7 Walker who runs like a steam train split right through the middle from about 45 out and was unstoppable to the line. Augustines converted and led 12 - 7. Again Oakhill hit back with a strong hit up from #5 Robson who pushed out of a tackle and planted the ball near the posts. Goddard converted to make it 14-12. A penalty goal late in the half to Oakhill and it was 17-12 at half time. An upset was brewing.

In the second half John Walker again from around 35 out took the ball up strongly and Oakhill could not contain him. He must of beaten 3 to 5 attempts and shrugged them all off to score under the posts. Easy conversion and Augustines led 19-17.

Oakhill were making ground around the short sides and out wide and consistently troubling the Augustines backline. The forwards were relentless and Augustines were dominating the scrums with the additional weight they were carrying. Augustines backline were under constant pressure from a rushing defense that led to the ball being turned back into a waiting Oakhill pack. Big hits and rushing defense were causing Augustines to spill the ball. From a clearing kick the #14 from Oakhill was bringing the ball back and was picked up above the horizontal by #8 James Lough. He was binned for 10. This allowed Oakhill to add another 3 points by Goddard who had his radar on today. Oakhill led 20-19.

Another infringement allowed Oakhill to slot over another 3 points taking the lead to 23-19. Soon after another tackle above the horizontal and the Oakhill #6 Will Ryan was given a yellow. Augustines camped themselves in the Oakhill half for most of the last 15 minutes but Oakhill managed to lift with their crowd support and hunger to beat Augustines. Oakhill held on and the crowd erupted as the ref blew the full time whistle.

Overall Oakhill defence was superb, despite the 2 Walker tries, the Oakhill backline outplayed the Augustines backline. The forward battle was extremely physical and Augustines dominated the scrums in the second half. I believe both forward packs gave it all and Oakhill squared up very well in facing the much bigger Augustines pack.

I thought #7 Walker from Augustines was excellent. Both Lough boys played well and after Luke Lough went off injured the replacing fullback (maybe Fontaine) was solid at the back. For Oakhill I thought Goddard and Day were the best backs but they all played well. #4 Brush from Oakhill played well linking in on the short side and making space for his wingers. In the forwards #3 Partridge played a strong game but the whole forward pack stood up yesterday.

There were some injuries to both sides. #15 Lough and #4 from Augustines. #1 Graham and #8 Chev from Oakhill. A stretcher was required for the #8 from Oakhill but I have since heard he has no neck or spinal damage which is great news.

Looks like Oakhill v Auggies MKII will be the Waratah Shield final.

BTW ISA 1 and 2 get selected today from a squad chosen a few weeks ago at the trials. A few injuries out of this game might give a few other boys a chance to represent ISA.

you do get sick of the crowd for bagging referees,
I must though commend the Oak Hill Parent who showed unwavering support for the referees performance when he said
"I don't know what the constant complaint for, is our guys are not more than 2 m off side"

Meet up with an Oakhill teacher at club on Sunday and he said that their #7 got Auggies MOTM. I asked him how come and he said it was because he spent so much time in Auggies backline

No teams as yet in terms of the ISA I and II breakdown.

I am surprised that there has been little comment about the politics of team selections here, given the recent results.

As usual Augies have the lions share of players, and I would anticipate that most of these will be in the I's. As happened in 2012, Oakhill has beaten the favoured Augies team. IIRC that year the ISA I's were essentially Augies and a few guest players, with ISA II's being Oakhill and the rest.

This year Augies [12 ISA reps] (undoubtably a strong side) has "stumbled" to Oakhill [6 ISA Reps] at the Oakhill Gala Day. Says something about the benefit of home town support.
Pats [3 ISA reps] has beaten Stannies [5 ISA Reps].

To further confuse the form guide punters, Oakhill narrowly beat Joeys, who in turn were put to the sword by Scots in AAGPS round 1. Augies went down to Riverview narrowly, who in turn thrashed Kings in AAGPS round 1. Stannies had previously beaten a Riverview 1st XV (less athletes) in the cold and wet at Bathurst, but then they fall to Pats at Strathfield.

So trying to make sense of that and to impose the usual self serving politics that seem to be evident at all Schools selections, in the absense of any detail on the teams, I would see the schools breakdown of the ISA I's being Augies 8 players in the I's, with Oakhill 4, 1 Stannies, 1 Kinross and 1 Pats.

The II's (and bench) then would be Augies 4 players, Andrews 2, Gregs 4, Kinross 4, Oakhill 2, Pats 2, Pius 2, Stannies 4.

Then again, I'm just playing with the numbers. There is another round of school games to play and a fortnight is a long time in kids sport. If no one has any inside gossip then all will be revealed on Sunday Week at Rat Park.

The Oakhill victory over Augies on the weekend must all but guarantee them the 2014 ISA Division I title, provided the rest of the rounds go to form. For the second time in 3 years, Augies will lose the ISA Div I title to Oakhill based on losing to them at the Oakhill Gala Day.

I can see Papa not being all that happy about things, and we will be seeing a different Augies side (in terms of preparation, discipline and fitness rather than personnel) take on Oakhill in the Waratah Shield final (assuming all goes to form in the Waratah Shield rounds and finals). The "score" between Oakhill and Augies for 2014 will be 1 all.

One wonders how much longer ISA Div I will be a one round competition with no final. With only 7 teams in the competition, (3 games per week) there must be a strong case for a home and away series to bring ISA Div I into line with the other associations (CAS and AAGPS) and ISA Div II, all of whom have 6 teams - 3 games per week - competitions. AAGPS and CAS remain "first past the post" premiers, while ISA Div II run a semi final/grand final premiership series.

If ISA Div I doesn't adopt a two round scenario, then perhaps 2015 may see the introduction of finals for that Division.

Thanks for the highlights Pilot
I don't think the lads in gold will enjoy reliving some of these moments, It would appear lack of line pride has been a issue for them in the close matches they have played this year. maybe they could learn from the Chaolin monk or ninja style defensive skills of the Oak backs and back rowers.
I am clearly biased but the St Augustines forwards did not have to wait for the second half to demonstrate their dominance. whether set piece or periods of retaining the ball for 6+ phases on numerous occasions. The Oak hill team were rarely breeched whether in their own half or Augies.

This was a great match for the ISA, I hope the other four schools in 1st division (and the top schools from 2nd) further embrace the culture that develops games of this quality.

there has to be alternative forms of management for weeds of national significance (Lantana)

When Augies AND Oakhill have been strong, ISA have generally had the potential to help combat the spread of Lantana.

IMHO recent ISA Rep teams have been too heavily weighted to one side or other and the Association team has failed to reach its true potential. In the last 5 years, I can not recall ISA I's giving CAS I's a damn good flogging, even though at the individual School vs School matched Augies and/or Oakhill have given most of the CAS Schools a bath when they have played throughout the year.

Something about the sum of the parts being greater that the sum of the whole.

Will this year be any different, with what appears to be a better balance of Oakhill and Augies numbers in the ISA I's?

Hugh I don't think it will change. I think ISA would have seriously considered it when GPS and CAS changed their comp to home and away. Logistics of the travel is a bit difficult with Kinross and Stannies. Finals may work but again all ISA schools also play for an overall schools shield which includes points from the 1st, 2nds, A's and B's for each age group. So that would also need changing.

In regards to Waratah shield. These 2 teams are likely to meet again. I hope they can move the game from a weekday and from Foreshaw. Would be good if they could play it as a curtain raiser to the new NRC - Sydney North Harbour Rays and Greater Sydney Rams match. This comp kicks off about the same time as the Shield final is due to be played I believe.

I am surprised that there has been little comment about the politics of team selections here, given the recent results.

8 Oakhill boys made ISA 16's last year and only 3 selected this year for the opens. In addition a couple of others that have previously represented at Sydney level are very unlucky to miss out on getting a spot in the II's.

On the other hand I am glad it seems to be shared around with other schools and because there is no noise from the other schools I assume the selectors have made some right choices or at least the kids know who are the best players in their team . I'd say a lot of rugby talent missed out this year but I predict at least 5 or 6 ISA to make NSW teams and yes I believe they may just give the CAS boys a good old fashion flogging.

How many times has ISA gotten up over CAS in the past 10 years?

O

there are still plenty around from the 2012 u/16 team that was as successful as the 2013 u/16, well, more successful really as they towelled up the CAS team in the play off for 2/3 at knox and didnt get absolutely flogged in the 1st round like last years mob,
This is all positive for this ISA team as I would believe they have all worked with others on the team in either school or club rep level or both.

I think you will find similar proportions of last years St Augustines u/16 missed selection in either squad and the 1st XV.

L. Lough seems to have defensive frailties at 12 perhaps 15 might be better for him + he has a big boot. Where do St Augs play him the majority of the time ?
