Got out to the game of the round yesterday Oakhill v Auggies. Having read this thread and judging by ISA and other representative selections Auggies went in favorites and deservedly so. Ok .. That's where reading anything into schoolboy rugby selections and the reputation of the invincible Auggies ends...

Oakhill went out and physically intimidated and outmuscled an Auggies side who were never really in the game. At 32-7 with 8 mins to go Auggies scored a couple of late tries in the vain hope of getting at least a bonus point out of what was a thorough demo, option of a more credentialed side. Let me say that the score line could have been a lot worse with only 2 from 5 kicked and a missed penalty, a disallowed try that had everyone miffed and a dropped ball with the line open... Auggies were really looking at 50 points.

Auggies strength has been there run around them in the backs.... Well unfortunately they tried that only to be shut down and then went to the forwards where the Oakhill pack were physically bigger and more intimidating.

In terms of injury Auggies had one injury , the young winger and otherwise started at full strength so I do not see them saying they had people out as bing an excuse. Injuries to a few key players saw one leave the field in the first half with a couple of key players leaving in the second when the score was 20 something to 7. In my opinion it was a brutal encounter that Auggies had trouble handling and it showed.

Some standouts were Lloyd from Auggies and from Oakhill, Cotton, Linkekar, Goddard and Woodward were all solid.

It may make for an interesting Waratahs Shield final if they get there ...

Glad to see ISA 2nd's got up against ISA 1sts today. Questions will be asked re: ISA selections now in future surely.

Agree with Heally about the game.
Oakhill had their fair day and a large crowd of supporters on the day which added greatly to the atmosphere.

To exISA's comment the Oakhill boys were focused and committed to their task. This was a big day infront of a very supportive and vocal crowd. Yes perhaps ISA 1 Vs ISA 11 but perhaps if they had played like that in the trials the selections may have been different.

Whether it was a shadowy act of political bastardry designed to enhance one schools standing or whether it was a case of incomprehensible selection incompetence the fact is it should never be allowed to happen again and those responsible should hang their heads in shame. The ensuing results from the NSW trials proved the stupidity of the original selections and yesterdays result confirmed what a lot of people outside of Augustines and the selectors already knew.

Augustines were outplayed accross the park and if you think the crowd had anything more than a minor influence on the result you are showing your rugby ignorance. Why weren't the Augustines players focused and committed to the task? Oakhill had nothing to fear as they have dominated this age group for 4 years even considering they were now playing against 5 NSW and 2 Australian representatives. It's a pity some of those selecters weren't there to watch it. My mistake, the opposition coach is one and I hope he enjoyed it.

I wasn't there but got a comprehensive report. Apparently Oakhill dominated in every position? Even the unheralded front row of Benton, Blacklock and Holden we're a class above? A score of 50+ was a better indication? My mate isn't prone to exaggerating so I guess there are some ISA and NSW selectors with egg on their faces? Can't wait to see the video.

Oakhill College defeated rugby powerhouse and favourites for the ISA title, St Augustine’s College in their 4th round encounter at Oakhill on 21 July. Playing in front of a capacity and vocal home crowd the Oakhill boys beat Augustine’s at their own game to record a 32 to 21 points victory.

by Crofty

Both teams played a physical and expansive game but the Oakhill backline outplayed their more fancied rivals in the five tries to three victory. Indeed, Oakhill led 32 – 7 with only 5 minutes remaining but Augustine’s never say die attitude added some respectability to the score-line with two late converted tries.

Oakhill took first points via a penalty to inside centre Woodward. The blustery conditions contributed to Woodward missing two earlier penalty attempts. Conversely, Augustine’s chose not to kick for the points when awarded a couple of penalties in Oakhill’s 22 but the Oakhill defence was steadfast with lock Linaker, LHP prop Holden and flanker Tuckwell repelling the forward charges and flyhalf Hoolahan and his #12 Woodward nullifying the midfield raids. The two Augustine’s locks Philip & Lloyd were very strong during this passage, both wrecking havoc every time they touched the pill.

Oakhill lost their captain for 10 min when Tuckwell was binned for a high shot on Natoli. By that stage Natoli was working himself into the game nicely with his customary snipes and good service to his outside men. The first Oakhill try came while Tuckwell was still in the bin; outside centre Canning took an intercept near his own line and the ball was worked downfield. Hoolahan then split the midfield channel, the forwards had a couple of pick n goes and it was fed left through the hands to winger Casey who outsprinted the cover. The try was unconverted for an 8 nil lead.

Oakhill halfback Gonzalaz was matching Natoli in terms of impact on the game – the battle of the two #9s was top shelf. Augustine’s lost Lloyd for 10 min when he was binned for taking out a player out not in possession of the ball and during this time Oakhill scored their 2nd try. They took a tap just inside the Augustine’s 22, the ball was again fed left through the backs, forwards arrived in support and a couple of phases later, lock Anderson dived over. The unconverted try made it 13 nil.

Augustine’s got their first points just before half time when outside centre Blake split the line at pace. The converted try made it 13 – 7 at half time.

Both teams came out firing in the second half and the forward exchanges were brutal. The Augustine’s pack were faultless at the set piece all day – their scrum was particularly impressive and they never looked like losing their own lineout throw and stole quite a few Oakhill lineouts. It must be said, however, that the Oakhill forwards won the battle of the breakdown; their counter rucking was passionate and effective.

Oakhill almost scored early after Woodward took the line on and off loaded, the ball was fed wide but the final pass went to ground with the line open. They made amends soon after though when Gonzalez picked up a charging Woodward from a scrum 15m out – the big bloke is unstoppable from that range. He converted his own try to take the score to 20 – 7.

Natoli unfortunately had to leave the field with a leg injury midway through the 2nd half. It didn’t appear to disrupt Augustine’s too much as his replacement, Smart played very well.
Oakhill got their bonus point try after the forwards stole a ball at the breakdown and the ball found its way to fullback Cotton who grubbered ahead and right wing Collins won the race to the line. Woodward missed from out wide and it was 25-7.

The 5th Oakhill try was pure rugby poetry in motion. Woodward slipped the most beautiful pop pass to Cotton on his shoulder 40m from the line and Cotton exploded through the defence to score. Woodward converted for 32 -7.

Both teams were dead on their feet by this stage but Augustine’s had more in the tank in the dying stages and Lloyd was rewarded for a fine game with a great individual try where he beat at least 4 defenders. Winger Ibboston scored on the bell to make the final score 32 – 21.

St Augustine’s were best served by their two locks Philip & Lloyd and their halfback Natoli. Blindside flanker Walker also worked hard all day. Oakhill recognised Lloyd as the pick of the Augustine’s players at the after match function.

Hard to call out Oakhill’s best as all 15 players stepped up. The boys gave their player’s player to fullback Cotton. Woodward was outstanding at 12 and 9 & 10 Gonzalez & Hoolahan were up there as well. The forwards hunted and worked as a pack and laid a great platform for the backs. Up front Holden had an enormous game in his return from a broken hand. Linaker at lock was equal to Philip & Lloyd in terms of impact on the game. Tuckwell was everywhere – his cover defence was outstanding and Goddard at the back of the scrum gained many metres with his powerful running.

A great game played by two impressive sides. The win places Oakhill in prime position to win the ISA competition with 3 rounds remaining. With both teams on opposite sides of the Waratah Shield draw there is a chance they could meet in the final – a salivating prospect.

The Oakhill video analyst generally posts a brief highlights package on the College’s rugby Facebook page for those interested in seeing some footage of the game.

Is this forum the only place to get results? Tables? Hard to find updated results that are not late. Any ideas other than School Rugby Tribune who also seem to wait for this forum for updates? Good website though.

According to the Facebook chatter, IIRC Stannies won 36- 7 and Gregs 52-28.

I usually look in the Sunday Papers Sports Scoreboard section for the GPS, ISA and CAS results. Usually they are all there but there were a couple of results missing from yesterday's edition.

I also recall a poster last year saying that the country edition of the papers may not have the Sydney scores. The ISA website is user unfriendly and I am not sure when it is updated. NSW Schools RU website is useful for high level historical stuff but of little use on a daily basis.

Remember that these websites are at best run by enthusiastic volunteers, and they probably feel that it is not their job to coordinate the publication of results.

In summary then:
Oakhill 32 -21 over Augies
Gregs 52 - 28 over Pius
Kinross 40 -5 over Pats
Stannies 36 - 7 over Andrews

I pity the team playing Augies this weekend. Oakhill have done them no favours.

I suspect there will be a backlash performance from Augies. Anyone recall the Darkness Third Test effort vs the Spud Bashers this year.

I think that Crofty gave a much clearer less biased appraisal. Yes I may ignorant of rugby but I prefer to be measured in my responses rather than beligerant. Become a selector and influnece the process.

Firstly congrats to Oakhill on a fine win.
Secondly, you really need to move on about the ISA selections, they were not that far wrong, as indicated by the failure of most in the II's to impress despite playing weaker teams than the I's faced.

Only point to prove is winning the game. Boys have moved on from the silly season and are looking forward. Teams are in opposite sides of the Waratah shield draw, but it would make a good final if they meet.

Hmmm ... has everyone moved on?

The result just goes to show the old saying that the team that wants to win more and turns up to play often does.

Two other outomes form the day are that there is a viable competition for the top slot in ISA, and that the Waratah Shield Final (predicted to be a return match) should be a real ripper with plenty of passion and all to play for.

Anyone have an idea of the time and place of the Waratah Shield Final?

ILTW, the whole gripe about the ISA selections is the methodology. It has been flawed for many years but reached the level of high farce this year. There will be positive change next year, if what I'm told actually happens.

Sorry Jarse just using your post to reply to the 2 Augustines sycophants.

Boys might have moved on but I can still hear the condescending bullshit that was floating around at the time. Lets not forget that the issue was not about a couple of odd selections, this was about the complete disregard for a team of players who had proven themselves in the same competition for 4 years. Bleats from ILTW asking for justification of an Oakhill player over an Augustines player was all to easy when you are on the perceived right side of the selections. Well you got justification in spades on the weekend, these kids have been this good since year 7 and nothing has changed since the pathetic ISA trial set up which was unashamedly biased. Now Mr Runner is on here trying to lay off saturdays game as a one up performance created by the days atmoshere and that Oakhill were focused. Really, I thought playing 1st XV level requires focus in every encounter unless you are arrogant to the point of not respecting your opposition.

Watch, if you think anyone other than Papa was impressed by what Augustines dished up against CHS and particularly CAS then thats your belief and you stick with it, it was probably marginally better last saturday. IMO playing and beating CCC (who went on to beat a resonable side in GPS III's, with Pulver and a number of Combined States players) the day after a 70 min slog in the mud at St Greg's with half a team you haven't played with before is far more meritorious than canning the saturday comp game and then losing to CHS. Had've the right ISA balance been selected it would have been a whole different result and who knows maybe the selectors would have thought differently. For someone who believes so righteously in the selections why were you tipping an Oakhill victory last week. Surely in your mind these lesser performed players couldn't overcome the might of 6 NSW reresentatives in one team? I felt sorry for young Hanigan having to miss the game for the latest drop in but he was probably your best player, keeping up the tradition eh!

You've had the luxury of some really good players over the past couple of seasons in Dombkins, Hingano, Atone (?) and Purcell and your success was deserved but there aren't those types of players in this current lot but in schoolboy football the legend often exceeds the ability and the myth was exposed on the weekend.

Just catching up on all the results. Great win by Oakhill and if these teams meet in Waratah Shield, I'll be down to watch. Not that it matters but just updated on Kinross V St Pats. Kinross running away with it 40-5 in Orange. Told 10-5 halftime, 13-5 with 20 min to go. Best from Kinross apparently 13 and 6. From St Pats 2 and 7. st pats 7 off with hand injury at 13-5 and then apparently poor discipline costly. St Pats 12 sin binned and a winger red carded. St Pats 2nd XV comfortable winners.

Also heard St Greg's put a few up in winning.

Agree that No 7 was good in the game against Barker the previous week as well. His name is Matt Vale.

That's not correct, I believed there were many close selections, with very few standouts. I did make the point there was little between the two teams before the CHS game.I just didn't buy the incessant moaning that certain kids were robbed unfairly.
I was tipping Oakhill, because they have had a much superior preparation for the game. Whilst Oakhill have been training and playing trials all holidays, St Augustines didn't train for a month and last played as a team 6 weeks ago in a one sided game.

That's not an excuse, both teams knew when the game was on, one team was determined to be at their best, and was rewarded for their effort.Good on them.

Hey JC, please don't think it doesn't matter - it does! More than a few of us here very interested in results and reports across all of the ISA games - please keep your comments coming.
