One would hope the renewed negotiations with Huawei, and the other backups will wield some results...

Would rather not take a handout from the ARU if possible...

How many RL titles have South Sydney won?

Do we also start counting test victories from when the game turned professional?

Who's Don Bradman? Oh he's some bloke who played before the pitches were covered. But a different era, so his runs don't count.

Ian Thorpe got some world records when shark suits were allowed, but we should ask him to give the gold medals back right?

A different time? Puhlease.

Actually, The Super 12 wasn't an extension of the Super 8/10 series... rather, Super 12 was formed in 1996 as a brand new, unrelated competition that continues today with SupeRugby.

That's why Super 8/10 results are not recognised by the ARU, or SANZAR in the history of the SupeRugby competition...

It's completely different to the extension of the NSWRL or VFL to where they are today...

Moving on...

Brumbies see ARU bailout as last resort
BY LEE GASKIN
26 Dec, 2011 01:00 AM

ACT Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan insists an emergency SOS to the Australian Rugby Union is a last resort amid hopes of resurrecting a $4million sponsorship deal.

The Brumbies have less than two months to fill the gaping financial hole left by Chinese technology giant Huawei, which backed out of a four-year contract to be the Super Rugby franchise's naming-rights sponsor.

Both parties are attempting to salvage the deal, which came unstuck when the telecommunications company, which is the largest privately owned firm in China, pulled the pin last Thursday because of unforseen circumstances.

Huawei, which has more than 95,000 employees in 140 countries, was also previously in discussions with the Canberra Raiders, which are also still without a major sponsor for the upcoming NRL season.

If no deal can be struck with Huawei, or another sponsor found before the Super Rugby season kicks off on February24, the Brumbies will turn to the ARU to provide a cash injection to cover their immediate expenses.

''If we need assistance, the ARU has assured us that they will provide it,'' Fagan said.

''But our first step is to see if anything can be resolved with Huawei.

''Subject to it being delayed or deferred, we need to look for another partner.

''If that takes longer than we would like, then the ARU sits there as one organisation that could provide cash-flow support.

''It's not a long-term issue for us, it's a short-term cash flow issue.''

The ARU has its own financial difficulties having recorded a loss of $8million this year.

But it has shown in bailing out the NSW Waratahs and the Queensland Reds that it is prepared to lend a hand to Australian provinces. With the club sitting on a potential goldmine with the redevelopment of their Griffith headquarters, any rescue package would likely be a temporary measure.

Talks with Huawei began in July after the Brumbies were informed late last year that Computer Associates would be ending its 15-year association as the club's major sponsor.

Fagan said he received confirmation last month that Huawei had settled on the Brumbies to be its first foray into sports sponsorship.

''It got to the stage of approving jersey designs,'' Fagan said.

''We were awaiting the global board's rubbing stamping of the agreement, which I understand was received last week.

''There were some unrelated issues that arose that Huawei needed to address, that essentially meant instead of signing contracts on Thursday we received notification that they weren't able to confirm the sponsorship.

''I hope within the next six to eight weeks we'll have it resolved.''

A spokesman for Huawei said the Brumbies were one of several short-listed candidates, along with the Raiders.

''Unfortunately because [the Brumbies'] season starts so early, their deadline to lock in a sponsorship was too soon for us,'' the spokesman said.

Raiders Group chief executive Simon Hawkins and the ARU declined to comment on the matter.

There's a bit of work to get done before it's given the go ahead.

I've written in the Brumbies thread that it all comes down to rezoning the land. getting the permission and trying to get the NIMBY's of Griffith onside. All 3 are tough to get done.

Oh, and it looks like the French article at the top of this thread got its $8M figure from the ARU's loss...

Hmmm so so a provincial rugby competition with teams from South Africa, Australia and New Zealand bares no resemblance to the modern day Super Rugby..

I don't care whether the titles count or not, but let's not be naive and believe that Super Rugby didn't evolve/grow out of the Super 8/10 comps

But I digress

Brumbies won't go under. Haven't they got a huge redevelopment that'll cash them up long-term? The ARU will fix them up for the next year or so and all will be rosy.

Just to throw it out there, no-one in NZ that I'm aware of recognises the Super 10 comps as part of the SANZAR competition which started in 1996. Probably because the comp itself doesn't recognise them.

Yep... Only Reds fans...

If bailing out leads to Super title then bring it on ARU!

Fighting over which is the most successful super team in Australia is petty. We should be trying to be the top dog country in Super Rugby. I hope for the best for all our super rugby teams.

I think the Brumbies just need a new brand or image. They are still in the shadows of the Gregan, Larkham, Smith, Mortlock era. What they are delivering at the moment - on the field and through their recruitment and fanbase - isn't cutting it for grabbing peoples attention these days.

So is constantly claiming to be the most successful Australia rugby franchise ever while ignoring everything that happened before my team is formed.

I've already explained this, but Super 8/10 is officially not included in the history of SupeRugby, as the competition was created in 1996.

It's only petty to be claiming victories from an unrelated competition...

Maybe they shouldn't have acquired the Super prefix as to not confuse you guys?

People seem to forget that the NZ teams were only formed in 1996 as well.

SA took a couple of years to get their new franchises going.

The Reds and the Tahs are the only two teams that were not created for Super Rugby.

Fixed that for you WJ :)

Nope, u didn't stu. The Tahs play a trial in country nsw somewhere every year, as well as two home games in the western suburbs away from there home ground. The rebels playing all over victoria are they? That's right, there Melbourne not Victoria.

Didn't realise this thread was a dick measuring contest, I must be in the wrong place. The brumbies might be going through hard times now but give them a year or two and the new young players working with the coaches will create something brilliant similar to the reds, then everybody will want a piece.
