I note that when people are arguing against starting both Hooper and Pocock, no one is suggesting we start Mumm at 6 which would seem the most likely based on teams selected this year.

Fardy's form is improving but I would be quite surprised if Mumm misses the 23 entirely this weekend. Seems he is the reserve lineout caller after Simmons.

Interesting.

Depending on the locks and backrow England play with their injuries and now suspension I would play 6 Mumm, 7 Pocock 8 Timani.

Ireland have only palyed 3 games this season. They played a B team against Canada.
So 2 hard games against NZ with a week in between.

Aust does this every year except no weeks break yet are fine in the 3rd game.

Aust have played 13 games so if anything would be more tired.

I haven't yet seen the second game between IRE and NZ but from what I've heard it was a particularly torrid and brutal game. The injuries coming from it are probably testament to that.

I think that's what most people are talking about when they ponder how Ireland might back up. Such a big physical test can take longer than a week for the players to return to top fitness. I could have read it wrong but.

No doubt in my mind Hooper and Pocock will start. Neither will be "rested".

All things being equal and Chek's past preference, Hooper will play 7.

So Pocock either plays 6 or 8. Who misses ot, Timani or Fardy/Mumm.

Timani has gone pretty well and probably should hold his spot but Chek has a lot of faith in Mumm so it wouldn't be a surprise to see Mumm start.

Tight five should be as expected with Sio, Moore and Keps and Simmons and Arnold taking the lock spots. I really think that forward dominance will go a long way to winning the game.

I am wondering whether Quade will even make the bench for this match.

This will be our toughest match of the tour, so far. A win is desperately important, a win with no more injuries.

Our starting backrow is going to be Pocock, Hooper and Timani for the Ireland game.

If all three remain healthy I almost guarantee that will be the case for the England game too.

I think Cooper will be on the bench for both games. He's the backup 10 and needs to be there. I don't think Cheika will go into a test with his reserve 10 option being Hodge.

Wallabies had a torrid 2 games in a row against then and then easily backed up in the 3rd game and won.

Except for injuries Henshaw and Sexton Ireland will back up fine.

Our ultimate bench back is KB (Kurtley Beale). He can pay every position except for 9 and I reckon he might give that a good nudge if required.
Hope he's back on deck soon and can regain fitness while up north.

I'm in Adelaide this weekend and having it on SBS means I could potentially watch the game live whereas there would be no chance if I needed beIN Sports. No hotel has that on their TV package.

The 4:30am game is the worst for watching live. Too late to go back to bed afterwards unless you're not planning to do much on Sunday!

Ah it's terrible isn't it! There should always be a level of consideration put into the time-slot of games for the away country's fans.

Problem with Beale being the best bench back is that if he's fit and in form he should be starting at 12 or 15. I've really come to terms with the idea that a fullback should have some kicking and game management skills. Skills Israel really lacks.

Naivalu for Speight makes sense. They can play the same 'wing on attack, 13 on defense' role.

Sefa is obviously quite green and might make some bad reads in the line, but Speight makes a lot of bad reads and I think Sefa is honestly more dominant in the tackle anyway.

Doesn't the cricket start tomorrow? You should be back home by Sunday.

I wasn't arguing either case, just speculating as to why.

I assume you're talking about the first three games of the Rugby Championship in your example though. If you are there was a two week break between our second NZ game and the Brisbane match against South Africa that we won so you would expect us to back up easily in that case.

I'm expecting Ireland will show little effect also but the proof will be in the pudding.

SBS will now be broadcasting this test. Great news for the 27 die hard rugby fans who a) will get up at 4:30am to watch the game and b) don't have Foxtel!

BH, don't forget the 15 "die hard (Queensland) Rugby fans" who will have to be up at 3:30am!!

I heard this morning that Ireland have lost another three players to injury, (added to the previous two). I predict a win for the boys in gold, but I'm not so confident about our chances against "Fast Eddie's" mob!

The Irish do NOT have 4 lineout jumpers so playing Pooper is the correct thing to do.

.

Depends on who they bring in for Stander at 6. If it's O'Mahony he's one of the best defensive line-out operators going around. Ireland then have four jumpers (Ryan, Toner, Heaslip and O'Mahony).

Not disagreeing that he's a decent defender, but I'd hide any and every play-making flyhalf on the wing in defence.

This includes Foley, Beale, Cooper and the future second-coming of Mark Ella.

It's about doing what needs to be done for the team to win, not some macho matador contest.

Of course, rugby punters still like the glorious idea of it but the coaches worth their salt moved on from it eons ago. You don't want to trample these blokes under the feet of the opposition bulls all game. Their worth is elsewhere.

By way of comparison, though, Barratt seems to defend in the line when he's playing 10.
