"He's still a mediocre 12". He wasn't mediocre when he was playing in between Larkham and Morty. He wasn't mediocre when he tore Wales a new one last year and the ARU and most fans didn't think he was mediocre when he was about to jump ship and head to France. He wasn't mediocre when he ripped France to pieces last year in Australia I'll give it to you that he is out of form right now and has never performed his best against the ABs. Mind you most in the know, including his team mates, Bob Dwyer and pretty much every other coach of note, seem to think he is OK. He doesn't select himself or choose himself to be the goal kicker, however he did choose to step down from kicking duties for the common good. Kudos to him for that when his coach didn't have the balls to do what needed to be done.

JB - perhaps a bad choice of an ambiguous word in 'still'. I should have said 'still today in his current role', as I agree entirely, Gits has performed some excellent duties for Australia back a while - some years back IMO - in his career. No issue there, the issue today is one of deterioration at the very top level for too long a recent period. Back in June/July, here I said that IMO Gits should have been given a 6 months sabbatical by the ARU in about 2009, and I think that had he taken a real break from the game for a good period, he would - at still only 28 - have come back much mentally refreshed and hopefully stronger in appetite and motivation. He has been playing high-pressure rugby for a very long period (7 years?) - this ultimately must create deep-down fatigue for some players. In a sense, he's been 'milked' for too long in too many positions by the ARU, and stakeholders are suffering the consequences, and, today, they're not good for anyone, including IMO Gits himself.

This debate about 12 / 13 is interesting, given that the ABs play their crashballer at 12 and their more versatile player at 13.

Actually, the whole Nonu-Smith combination has never really worked for me. I think our system is better. but if we're looking to recuit 12s, I think you guys should be talking JOC (James O'Connor).

(P.S. Horne is out for a long while - best of luck to the fella but he's got to put in half a dozen monster rounds in "SuperRugby" to be taken seriously again.

You are, of course, right. That said, my guy-love for Horne is still immense and i won't have people talking ill of him.

Remember when Horne smashed Fourie? We used to have someone who could do that, Mortlock and then we had Horne who can do it. None of the current backline can do that

It has only started working since Nonu has become less of a crash baller and more of a ball player.

However, I would still like our 12 to be able to at least straighten the attack if required. I don't think I want to see JOC (James O'Connor) at 12 until after the RWC.

''I feel my form has probably been judged on my kicking,'' Giteau said. ''Otherwise I have been pretty happy with the way I've been playing. But my kicking has been a little inconsistent.''

This little quote from MG if accurate is of concern. A little understated there Gits, - inconsistent between training and then giving 20% and 25% in the matches. As for being happy with your form away from kicking, well you would have to be one of the few in Oz rugby.

What training kicking stats have you got?

The previous reports have been that Giteau beats all comers at training with his accuracy hence why he has retained the kicking duties. The links have been posted on the Forum previously on different threads.

It's not like his kicking has been consistently awful. There have been good games as well, for example a 5/5 effort in South Africa. I really think, as far as opinion of Git's form goes, there's been a bit of a snowball effect on this forum. My own opinion is that his playing form hasn't been awful at all - he just hasn't done anything brilliant like we've seen in the past. I think his reputation has a bit to do with this as previously opposition teams would have spent a lot of time working out how to shut him down. Seeing some of the lines he is running near Cooper though I think when it finally clicks it will be really effective.

Thats the problem, that has been what has been said for how many years now. Test match rugby doesn't give you extended periods of time to get these "clicks" going. If they don't happen relatively quickly you have to move on.

IMO Giteau's form has been poor. There are better options at 12 than him.
