What is the point of Giteau and Mitchell going to subbies and scoring 50 tries? If they played in the Shute Shield they would at least maintain some match fitness with some halfway competitive rugby and the fringe super 14 guys would get a chance to run against some serious players.

don't have a problem with it, as everyones saying, brings good publicity to subbies rugby, good for the community game.

i do have a problem however with balmain pretty much identifying themselves as the original balmain (pre drummoyne). i think its just a copout.

Good thing Giteau is playing inside centre. I don't think he's up to that level of competition as a flyhalf.

I think this situation once again highlights Australia's need for a proper third tier competition...

The Sydney and Brisbane club competitions are bad enough... but now we've got high paid test players running around an even more amateurish comp?

I don't know what its like in third grade sub-districts in NSW, but if its anything like third grade was in Victoria when I was playing they would be mad to let them play. What are the chances of some bloke looking to make a bit of a hero of himself by sniping a Wallaby and taking him out?

Absolutely!!
I was surprised no-one mentioned this earlier. Subbies has plenty of used-to-be's and coulda-beens just waiting to belt the crap out of a glory boy. Really, where is the sensible upside? Don't tell me it boosts subbies - 1 week of gimmickry does F-all to the bottom line.

And as for the chance of being injured, last year Berrick Barnes and Rob Horne didn't make it out of Japan on the Spring Tour because they went over at training. Injuries can happen anywhere and the possibility of it isn't raised just because they're playing Subbies.

Some posters above think the injury possibility is raised via Subbies, btw.
I would be way less concerned if we had some winger depth, which we certainly do not.
The sensible idea would surely be to keep the 'number of opportunities for injury' down to the bare essentials at this stage of the 3N campaign when we desperately need an away win. If DM was injured in Subbies, there would be justified outcries IMO.
Wallaby training (as referred to above) is essential, playing in subbies is not.

That's putting it mildly, can't believe Drummoyne's solicitor hasn't asked them to radically modify their published 'history'. 'Thanks Drummoyne we'll just have that 1873-1919 period if you don't mind'.......There is a reason the Reds have black and gold socks fellas.....

I think its ridiculous. Here we are bemoaning the lack of another level of rep footy and when we have the chance for two of our highest profile stars to play club footy they're doing it for some pub side? Who cares about some hack from Epping. What I am more interested in is the likes of AJ Gilbert and Carlos Blanco the two young backrowers from Norths who are playing Randwick this weekend. How awesome would it be for them to take on two Wallaby stars? How awesome would it be for the likes of the force, tahs et al to see if those two young guns can match it test players.

Nah, instead the two glory boys are playing for shits and giggles at some local park.

I'd like to know the financial details too. It's no coincidence these two are two of the more high profile players going around and both enticed back east from the 4s once sponsorship money dried up there.

Outstanding knowledge of Subbies Rugby

Carlos Blanco a 'young backrower'? Didin't he leave Joeys in the last century?

This is great publicity, these guys are getting a lot of column inches for Aus rugby

I don't think this is a bad thing, it's certainly better than them spending their break sitting on their asses and doing nothing for the game.

Still... Paramatta and Penrith could use this kind of star power a whole lot more than a subbies club and getting two Wallabies for a top of the table clash (yes, it's not a random game it's actually damn important for both these clubs) does seem mighty unfair.

I don't see either of them picking up serious injuries in subbies. I don't think anyone will be able to catch those two, much less injure them.

yeah, and Norths play Randwick this weekend. Randwick - you know, Mitchell's and Giteau's actual club? Not their 'sponsor commitment'.

If they were playing for Randwick, as they should be, Gilbert and Blanco would have the chance to shape up against them.

Perhaps that's the idea, in Giteau's case.

Is it though? As far as I thought Queanbeyan was Giteau's club team, and Balmain Mitchell's. Both of which loan out to Randwick.

How many games has Giteau played for Randwick?
