I was comparing Brothers to the Shute Shield quality you seem to beleive to be the be all and end all of Australian rugby

Must admit I don't quite know what you are on about here, I fail to understand how Brisbane Club rugby has anything to do with anything we have been talking about. My point about the ARU pumping Shute Shield was not meant as a slight on any other comp, just that within a NSW context it should be seen as the pinnacle of local footy.

where is my knowledge of subbies rugby lacking? Please inform me of any mistakes

'two of our highest profile stars to play club footy they're doing it for some pub side?'

'Nah, instead the two glory boys are playing for shits and giggles at some local park'

Incredibly patronising remarks about Subbies and then to somehow suggest that Norths and Randwick are light years ahead, occupying some imaginary elite space in local Rugby, is just fanciful. Mind you, you're not the only poster applying that stretch.

Norths and Randwick are light years ahead. What are you going on about. Norths 3rd grade colts might struggle against Balmain 1st Grade...

I think that all of us who are part of a Subbies club will attest to the fact that yes, Norths and Randwick 1st grade are light years ahead of a 3rd div 1st grade team, so not too sure what you're trying to say PhD96. To even suggest they might be in the same stratosphere is pushing it. I like how this story brings a human interest factor to rugby, and some nice publicity, but apart from that can't see the point. It'll be close to a glorified training run for Mitchell and Gits, they should be able to rip the Subbies guys apart.

Don't get me wrong, Subbies rugby can be considered one of the lifebloods of rugby - thousands of guys who play for fun (mostly, unless they're paid like some Dirty Reds guys and a few other players - rumours were also circulating this year that Balmain were paying a few 1st grade guys!). Most Subbies teams have a smattering of ex-rep players or players who could have been good when they were young - but these guys have real jobs, and they are a long way down from the pros and semi-pros in the Shute Shield who have a lot more time to devote to strength, fitness and rugby training.

I went down to subbies after playing colts & grade, it was pretty average. Norths or Randwick first colts would put 50 on a subbies side.

I have 150 grade games behind me with one of Sydney's historically better clubs, and played Div 1 Subbies for 3 seasons. There are measurable differences between the competitions for sure and certain, but to suggest as the original respondent did, that subbies is 'shit & giggle' is just nonsense.

I played subbies. And played grade. In QLD and NSW for both. The standard gap is huge.

Now if you're getting upset about a colloquialism you need to lighten up big time.

This game's pretty close to me (Blackmore Park, Leichhardt) so I was thinking of maybe wandering down with a mate or two to check it out. More for procrastination from uni work than anything else but it could be interesting...

if anyone does go, considering doing a match report for us to put up on the main blog page. Send it through to one of me, Gagger, Moses, whomever usually posts on the front page and we can post it for you.

If I head down I'll take some notes and do a bit of a write-up. Quality is something I can't promise, however... Im guessing you mean PM it through to you Reg? I'm still a bit of a forum noob...

Sent! No pictures unfortunately, as I had no camera and I thought phone wouldn't quite cut it...

If Epping miss out on the finals they will be pretty pissed off but Balmain were ahead of them on the ladder and teams rarely lose on their own ladies day. Although I see that happened to Knox in 1st division today.

Obviously no injuries for them and they had a win so it will get good press. From what I hear Mitchell is mates with one of the guys that runs the Fanatics (which says it all if you ask me) who has invested heavily in getting Balmain up and running the past few years. Not sure how much cash Mitchell would be getting for it but obviously great publicity for the club.

dw everyone, figured it out, coz of their heraldic badge.

on that note, im reenergizing this thread because i was wondering if anyone knows what the glebe logo might have looked like before the merger with the original balmain?
