No doubt it was a yellow card, simply due to the fact that it was blatant cynical play - absolute brain fart.
The thing I have a problem with is the justification that the AB's "were likely to score". Going by the amount of other tries we stopped in that game, no one could say that they were "likely" to score. This (in this case) is ridiculously subjective and shouldn't weigh into the decision - I would like to think that Owens didn't consider this. But as I said in my first sentence - you don't need to consider the likelihood of scoring in this instance - go have a rest Sanchez.
As for the consistency, I felt that there were grounds for a NZ yellow when we were awarded 2 penalties hot on attack. The second one being close to the 22 with NZ scrambling, McCaw "fell" awkwardly at the ruck and onto the ball as Sanchez was about to let it sing. Cynical. We were awarded a penalty but nothing more. No one got chatted to, no one got warned.
The icing on the cake was when Quade got penalised late in the game for tugging on a support players jersey. I hate that sort of play but to call him out and tell him that he was lucky it wasn't yellow was ridiculous. Owens clearly had a bee in his bonnet that night.
My last complaint I think came late-ish in the game. At a ruck, AUS had cleaned out and were securing the ball. I can't remember which NZ player it was but he was bound in the ruck and was playing the ball with his hands. Owens said very clearly, "Leave it black! Leave it black! Leave it black!". The NZ player eventually picked up the ball and turned it over, to which Owens then said, "That it fine". WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?!
But I digress...
1. Yes Sanchez's was a yellow
2. Cynical is often difficult to define and is rarely as obvious as Sanchez's incident. That's what makes Richie so good. He makes often somewhat cynical play look quite legitimate and/or innocent.
3. I hate passing off the ground. If the tackler can't influence the ruck until he reaches his feet, neither should the tackled player.
