I'm not a cynical player, nor a professional athlete, but haven't we all done something like Will's yellow on instinct?

Professional sport is hugely instinctual (you don't have the time to make conscious decisions often) and things like this happen.

Certainly deserved a yellow for mine but it doesn't take away from his character in my eyes.

He owned up to it in the post match interview - said he thought if the pass went to hand the AB's were looking likely, and he just reacted.

Scoey said "3. I hate passing off the ground. If the tackler can't influence the ruck until he reaches his feet, neither should the tackled player." That was my query in another thread but unfair as it seems in that instance, it seems to be the rule.

What I have always retorted to my friends who tell me that league is better than union is that at least in union the ball is contestable 100% of the time it is in play. When we see the Genia incident, feeding the ball into the second row at scrum time and to a certain extent not being able to interfere with a lineout jumper when he is in the air passing to the receiver (I do understand safety wise) well, I'm starting to lose that argument with my friends.

As for the above comments about New Zealand getting the better of the calls, 50/50 or otherwise, I haven't seen them all I admit but I just put that down to home ground advantage, it seems to happen in all codes. And in an imperfect world, it ends up even(ish).

Hey Lyall,
Welcome. Glad to have you on board. Thought I'd give you a quick heads up on the quote function. I've done it now so you'll get an alert. It helps keep track of conversations by alerting the person you've quoted. You don't have to use it all the time, especially if you're replying to the post directly before yours (although if it's a long post i.e. one that takes a long time to write - I would recommend it as other people can post before you). If you want to quote someone just hit reply and you will see their post with [qoute] at the start and [/qoute] at the end (i misspelled that on purpose so it wouldn't look like
Just delete the parts that don't apply and make sure you leave in the quote bits.
Cheers.

The penalty on Quade was at about the 50 minute mark and was absolutely a penalty - he got caught in no man's land on defence so he just grabbed Read coming through in support.

The Crockett thing was pretty iffy, but equally the way 3 Wallabies have fallen over past the ball there - well, let's just say when the All Blacks do that you get a lot of comments round these parts.

The Quade incident was definitely a penalty, I wasn't arguing that. It was the threat from Owens that he was lucky not to get a yellow that I was saying was BS. It was never a yellow card and to threaten a player in that way was ridiculous.

The Crockett thing was not iffy. The AUS players cleaned out allowing Hooper to contest the ball, Mealamu comes in from the side to clean out Hooper and Crockett plays the ball whilst on the ground. The comments about AB's that you get around these parts is when they do their stock standard play of falling over ON the ball.

It is the rule for sure - but the original post was asking what peoples thoughts were on the rule. Mine were as you quoted. ;)

As for interfering with a lineout jumper, that is 100% due to safety. I have had the misfortune of being "interfered with" whilst jumping in a lineout and it ended badly. I will gladly dicuss the merits of that rule with anyone in person. The first thing I would do is ask them to jump/be lifted. Looks easy but a lot of people can't even do it unopposed let alone, fight for a greasy pill in mid air while the blokes holding you up get pushed around below you.

I think that if a case is made for mandatory yellow, interfering with a player in the air (whether lineout or competing for the high ball) would have to be frontrunner. Just too much likelihood that it will turn nasty. I have been dropped head down playing basketball and while I was relatively unscathed it scared the shit out of me.

Couldn't agree more BPC, but as with most things Rugby, it's never cut and dry unfortunately. I think the referees generally do a good job of policing players that interfere with another in the air. Often it's just clumsy but there is a very fine line between clumsy and reckless.
