Just an addendum:

On last night's Rugby Club, McArdle made it _very_ clear that parties from, or associated with, the Force leaked the news re Genia's move directly to FoxSports staff and comms during Saturday, April 28 in Perth, if not before, and prior to any Reds' media release later that day.

If you openly leak to FoxSports like this, it's clear you want them to broadcast the news. And FoxSports duly obliged.

I liked it when Kafe dispelled the rumours that Tim Horan had something to do with the deal falling over by saying something like: "I can say unequivocably that Tim lacks the intelligence to engineer something like that."

And a Damned nice guy. From my limited interactions with him a long time ago.

They were very defencive about it all. I found it quite funny. Thought he had the scoop and ended up with egg on his face. Have a giggle and move on I say. Tim being a proud Reds man I am sure is happy to be wrong in this instanse.

From inside the tent: the genia move was, understandably, contingent on the ARU top up to his contract being confirmed. Deal done with Force on assumption that ARU top up was a formality. ARU took several days to deal with the top up issue giving the Reds the last say.
Anyone else think there is a remote possibility that the ARU felt Genia was worth more to them in QLD than WA and so manipulated the situation to prevent Genia going to the Force?
Just bear in mind: QLD is a natural rugby playing state; force home games are never or rarely played in peak viewing times on our most densely populated east coast.

I think Will just changed his mind. Maybe the ARU dragged it's feet, but make no mistake, if Will was committed properly to going to the Force, he would be there.

But I like your thinking, I would love a good ARU blame conspiracy.

The point is that if they hadn't had to wait for the ARU they would have had his signature but because the ARU had to be part of the deal, just as they are with QLD, he had time to be talked out of it.
I didn't surmise this so it's not my conspiracy theory: I gather the force believe this is what happened.

Conspiracy aside, I think in all the force offered 600 thousand talk that something has been missed, the steller job that Genia and his management did in getting the money he wanted from QLD.

If he was happy to stay for 400,000 then you would have to scythe reds came to his party nit the other way around.
450 plus third party deals - force couldn't offer 3rd party deals cos firepowers in liq

I assume that the new system is already in affect, that is that the states have to negotiate the deal first and then the ARU sorts out the top up. The ARU top up is independent of the state contract.

Thats the way it sounded to me: for a player of genia's standing you would assume that his top up would be the same wherever he played - but he, correctly, would not sign until he knew the ARU deal.
The only justification for the ARU not being up front - i.e. telling the player whether and if so to what extent he was going to get a top up - would be if the ARU sees it as some part of their role to influence players to goi to a particular province.
I would have thought that the ARU should wish to position themselves so as to have as little influence as possible on the choice of province otherwise they leave themselves open to the charge that they favoured one province over another.

Maybe someone else can fill us in, but it may even be that the player has to sign for the club first before negotiating any top up. Seems a bit too skewed in the ARU favour though.

I was chatting to some guys out in tahland last week and that is how it works. However they said there was about 4 levels of ARU top up and you were aware about what level you were on, so unless your a fringe wallaby you know what your going to get money wise.

I think the Force have actually dodged a bullet by Genia doing a backflip. 600k for a nine when they really need a ten.

Dont get me wrong, it would be great to have a player like Genia over here but I don't think any team should be paying that much for a player under the current salary cap.

But presumably they have to confirm it when the times comes to sign - and the delay may have been in that aspect.
WJ what you say makes sense - it would have to be fairly clear otherwise you'd finish up with blokes choosing to stay here and the ARU dropping them down a rung on the top ups.
I'm going to get wired for sound next time I speak to this fellow so you guys can ask the questions I forget to ask - we covered a lot of ground and I have one clanger that I don't dare publish but which I believe and if so its a scandal and accords with everyone's suspicion on here concerning GG.
