Said it before, will say it again:

It is too late to make a change. As fatprop has alluded to, there is no time for a new Wallabies coach to develop, implement and see the successful outcome of a new game plan and playing roster before the Lions tour.

If Deans was going to be sacked, it had to happen after the mid-year tests at best, and during the 4N at worst.

We have Deans until post-Lions. We just have to live with that fact.

Do we even need a coach? Couldn't be any worse. France RWC '11 did alright without one. If needed, Sharpie could throw a few ideas around at training...

Yes, absolutely. Should have gone after the RWC. Best to do it now as with a change we may go better against the Lions. Let's face it, couldn't go worse.

It's annoying to me that after the first half of TRC, everyone was crying for Dean's head, then after the Argentina game and the All Blacks in Brizzy, the general consensus was that "he's done enough to save his job and should be kept at least til the end of the Lion's tour",

The consensus was more like "Unfortunately he has done enough that the ARU can/will keep him". Don't think you will find many here who thought he had justified any further time in the job.

We were just resigned to him not getting the bullet.

While this might make sense any other day of the week - the fact is that your argument also goes for deans - ITS TOO LATE for him to suddenly develop, implement and see the successful outcome of a new gameplan. So he has to go.

I honestly don't think it will take long to bang the wallabies back into shape. I don't want to hear more '3 year plans etc...' I expect the next coach to hit the ground running and I really do believe that MacKenzie could take Deans' group and polish them up for the tour.

Sometimes we feel like we're lightyears from where we should be but I believe that all the player potential is there - the leadership and strategy is just wrong and maybe just the guy who gives the speech in the dressing room needs to change.

Next years super series will set the tone for how we play the lions. not this years flwaed wallabies campaign.

Just watching the NZ V Scotland game. Julian Savea has just scored his 8th try this international season. Australia combined has 12..................but Savea was on the bench for a few games so he will probably catch us.

To all of the people saying it is too late to make change, can you put up with another year of this shit?

How is it too late to change now? The new coach will have 6 months to get things in place before the Lions tour. Surely that is plenty of time. If Deans goes after the Lions tour the new guy only gets 4 weeks before the Rugby Championship. It could be argued that that wouldn't be enough time so he should stay on til the end of the year.
As a Reds supporter I wouldn't mind if Link stepped away for Wallaby duties, but I would only be happy if the ARU had a proper recruitment process that was transparent.

Isn't it bloody sad we are reduced to debating the obvious? I have tried really hard to comprehend how deans has managed to stay in for so long when by all objective and rational measures he has failed spectacularly.
So in short - hell yes.

Deans should have been cut loose ages ago - just because that bald bloke you ahd in charge like him is why he stayed. His results would be the worst ever for an Australian coach? Certainly against the All Blacks, but also losing to teams like Scotland and Samoa. Interesting read in Richie McCaw's book, he backed henry to stay on at the All Blacks, and with the benefit of 5 years hindsight, it was the right decision. I think Deans is a perfect example of a coach who is bloody good at Super level, but not an international coaches bum hole. Like many players - great at Super level, but at test level, nope.

Yes for me.

Just wondering if Link (who apparently isn't next in line) would be the same as Deans in regards to being a good coach at super level and shite at international level?

ps fingers crossed there is a clause in Deans contract where he gets the boot, if we get kicked out of the top four of the irb rankings, as we surely will on this tour.

Yes, don't get me wrong; I agree with that. Deans is simply a dead man walking and the ARU have made a terrible error in letting him stay so long.

My reasoning for Deans to stay until after the Lions tour is actually pretty simple; if you were the in-coming Wallabies coach, would you really want your baptism of fire to be a potential loss in one of the biggest in-bound tours of your career?

We all love Link. We (nearly) all want Link to take over. Assuming Link is next, put yourself in his shoes; would you really want public opinion to be influenced negatively right out of the starters gate?

That is my only reasoning for Deans to stay until post-Lions, and I think that is what will happen.

PS - If Nucifora is actually the next cab off the rank, then Deans should have his contract extended. o_O

International Rugby Coaching isn't just about the head coach. They need to surround themselves with a team of assistant coaches, consultants/specialist advisors, S&C staff, physios. medicos, (increasingly so) Life Skills advisors, dietiticians etc.

In short it is about a Team to assist them to manage the Team.

Has Dingo been given free reign to assemble the required team to help him to run the Wobs?

Has he actually been assertive enough to demand the freedom of action necessary to assemble the right team balance in his support staff and assistants?

Does he actually know what is needed in terms of support staff and assistants, and how to use them?

The answer to all of the above seems to be No!. This seems to be reinforced by what has been reported in Sir Richie GOAT's book about his preparedness at the interview for the Darkness Head Coach gig. Lord Henry apparently went in with the full solution and a complete package, whereas Dingo seemed to throw himself on the mercy of the Selection panel - "Here I am, I am good, please choose me".

In early days, Dingo could be excused because the calibre of his assistant coaches which appeared to be thrust upon him was a little poor. That being said, he should have been assertive enough to demand that they be sacked and replaced.

Dingo has to go, but it has to be on ARU terms with a Plan B in place before Plan A is executed.

The first thing that has to happen is for Chairman Hawker to come out with a public statement that the Board has full confidence in Robbie Deans to continue to perform until the end of his contract, and that there are no plans in place to replace him. ( The most transparent indicator in all of Sportsdom, that we are about to sack the useless bastard. )

In chosing the replacement, the Board must consider replacing/refreshing the entire package and not just head coach. All Assistants, Advisors/consultants, team administrators, medicos, S&C etc must be considered - can/will they work effectively with the new bloke? If not get ones that can/will.

Oh and keep Nuci as far away from the process as possible.

To me the issue is not just who is going to replace Dingo but is there ongoing roles for Totality Tony and others come the revolution?

Personally, I don't think Link is up to the gig yet, but if he is selected who should be in the Coaching team along with him.

I think any nominations to replace the Dingo need to include, as a minimum, a listing of the preferred assistant coaches and advisors as well.

That is also a valid argument. Honestly, it could go either way.

Drop the Pom game by a decent margin and his Oz entry visa may well be cancelled.

You know, with JON gone, I don't think any of us know who Deans has as an ally at ARU HQ, or what they are thinking. Is it a financial decision?

To quote another John; Strange days indeed. Most peculiar, Mama.

EDIT: Have a gander at this piece by a Kiwi journo. You know things are bad when the Kiwi's feel sorry for us.
