How do you think a South Brisbane team would go in terms of support?

Uh oh, this offers Quade the opportunity to be near JOC (James O'Connor) and yet still play League.

I really don't see the attraction of having a league team in Perth.

I thought one of the big reasons why the Force worked was because there is a large South African population in Perth and they like their Rugby

The team will likely be known as the Perth Reds. They already run teams in the SB Ball competition. Did have a senior side in the 3rd domestic RL competition that were comphrensively beaten week in and week out. Perth is a bit of a myth for RL IMO. This isn't a baseless opinion either as due to no real Rugby available in the North West of WA my kid brother played a couple of season. No real plan or talent development. The thing is many quote crowd figures which have been declining for the one off NRL games as an impetus for a team. The thing is I know alot of guys from there who attend those games because its not AFL or Soccer but forced to choose between League and Rugby, Rugby is the winner hands down. AFL rules the roost over there so they shouldn't expect any favourable treatment timeslot wise especially if they as i suspect they will re0sign with 9 who actually have a sponsorship deal with the Force.

There a sizable Kiwi and Eastern Stater presence in WA. The thing is its primarily concentrated outside Perth in the mines. Rugby will continue to grow regardless of a League presence thanks to a very large Saffa and British and Irish populations. There's a bit of a running joke over there, one which my brother who still lives hears regualrly. It goes along the lines of Saffa to my brother (who's 23) "When your kids are at school they'll be learning Afrikaans as a second language and his kids friends will be called Yannie and Bismarck".

The danger for Rugby is that they will likely try to leech off its growing talent pool by poaching player's. From experience League is a far easier game to play and with the offer of money its pretty hard to knock back.

O'Connor would make a pretty good marquee player in Perth too

That he may but my concern would be the younger players. The juniors competition has been growing in standard year on year. A good demonstration of this was the WA U16's at the Schoolboy Championship this year. They did themselves proud pushing the top teams and taking their chances. The thing is there are a even better crop in the U14s who will be the first of many. They're the ones that I would have issues with League poaching. They are the future of the Force both on and off the field (local grown talent) and they would produce a ready made far superior quality talent pool than the local RL competition. Fact.

it is league central out there, but they'd have to play their games at Suncorp I imagine. Surely the Govt won't fund another stadium.
they want to play at Lang Park, and have a centre of excelence at Springfield. In the local paper last week they said there was something like 15000 junior league players in the Logan/Ipswich/Toowoomba region which is twice the number of Pentrith which is seen as a league heartland.

yeah, but in saying that, Logan to Ipswich to Toowoomba? That's quite a geographic area!

my forecast is that this needs to happen in order for league to learn its place, reach its peak and decline with the end in 10-15 years.

(hopefully)

reamalgamation would actually be best for our code actually, mungoball giving up and shifting everyone to rugby.

tbh i can't see them being able to play at suncorp - having five tenants would be tf.
The roar in the off season
The bronco's and reds and this new team, plus state of origin plus wallabies tests?
Would it work? because don't forget that generally, the reds will play there and then the broncos will play when the reds aren't there the following week. But with a new team that might not be possible...
And the bronco's would vote against it as splitting brisbane in half would cut down their crowd numbers by some way.

Its barely a issue, Suncorp Stadium is only been utilised by one team for the majority of weekends throughout the year, it could easily fit in another team, currently Suncorp Stadium picks up extra games throughout the year from certain NRL sides who use Suncorp as there home ground against matches against the Broncos.

The stadium can turnaround for another code in under 12hours, so you could host a NRL match on Sat night and have a Reds game on Sunday afternoon no problem. They did it in 2010.

Suncorp would have no problems with another team playing there.

There are 9 Melborune based AFL teams playing out of 2 stadiums. They dont have a problem.
And then there is cricket at the MCG in summer too.

my apologise guys i'm obviously a stadium n00b.

However it might be a problem for their fan base (logan, ipswich, far south of brisbane) to get to lang park.

Question to the expat Saffers and Darknessers in WA.

If it came down to call between Wobs (U20 or senior), or trying to become eligible for Saffer or Darkness teams, which outfit would you want to play for (or your sons/daughters)?

Your adopted country (and potentially the country of birth of your offspring), or your ethnically eligible country?

The difference being there are differences in a fields set-up between union and league whereas AFL is always the same.

This being said, 2 or 3 teams with slightly different set-ups shouldn't be an issue and as TOCC said 12 hours is more then enough of a turnaround.

Things could possibly go more pair shaped then usual by the end of the league season (in terms of pitch conditions) but you take the risk and it isn't really a union fan's concern.
