Letter by Mitch Hardy (Joondalup Brothers Club):

To the Board of the Australian Rugby Union
through John Eales
It is with regret and sadness I have to sit here and actually write this letter. Twelve years ago my family and I packed our things and we moved to Perth. Back then it was to work for RugbyWA and help in the running of their local competition, develop community programs, get rugby into schools, club and volunteer management plans and kick start the RugbyWA academy. There was already a thriving rugby community here and with the onset of the Western Force and its launch in 2005 over the last 12 years has seen the game flourish, expand and grow. I was lucky enough to have 7 good years working for the WA rugby community as an administrator, volunteer, coach, referee, high performance leader and assisted in building this game we all care about into something everyone was proud of.
Since leaving RugbyWA I have continued to support rugby via coaching, refereeing and volunteering on committees. My sons have both played since they were 5 and both have represented WA in rugby. This is their home and they both aspire to represent their state and possibly play for the Western Force. This has been taken away by those that only look at numbers not the game.
I have always been a servant to the game and those that know me understand what I am about. I played until I wasn't able to play retiring at the age of 42. I have played junior club rugby, Sydney club rugby, state rugby, super rugby, for the Wallabies and back to Sydney club back to Perth club and so on all the while living the true spirit and values rugby represents.
I have coached many talented young players across this time and shared stories and great memories with many stalwarts of the game including Geoff Stooke whom I admire greatly for his attitude towards the game.
My proudest moment was playing for Australia and being able to share the same turf with absolute legends of the game like yourself all of whom I respect and admire. I tell my kids all the time about the great players and what they could do on the field and how they carried themselves in victory and defeat. It is rare to see these attributes these days, but there are glimpses. Richard Hardwick is a great example of one who inspires young players. WA needs these champions as part of the process to engage kids. WA needs the Western Force and it what it stands for.
I am gutted to say the least at the way the WA rugby community have been treated. The board of the ARU are not there for the Wallabies they are there for Rugby and I have to say you have let the game and yourselves down. You have let me down as a long standing supporter and advocate for the game.
I and many others worked tirelessly for the game over here, clubs, teachers in schools, volunteers and staff at RugbyWA have worked only to be delivered a killer message and for you to stand by and let this happens begs disbelief that people I know and respect have not fought for the game around the board table.
This won't end with a press conference it will drag on for a long time and the game will be destroyed from within, it will cost millions of dollars. Sydney club rugby and Brisbane club rugby will probably survive and the rest will be left to wither and die a slow painful death.
This is the blackest day for rugby I can ever recall and those in other sports are laughing at us in disgust and bewilderment. You have all stood a party to this. You underestimate the passion and support for the game here in WA. Do you really want the ARU tarnished with this brush of hatred and disgust?
I am astounded at the lack of empathy for the game in WA and the lack of any respect towards the WA rugby community and to hear that the game will be ok with no solution or package offered concerns me greatly. Where is the funding package that will be in place for the next 3 years to get the game to 2020? What is the community structure / staff structure pathways programs financial support that will assist in the game here? What work has been done on this by the staff at the ARU and the board ? Nothing has been forthcoming throughout this whole process as to the future, no vision has been shared or communicated!
The silence by those that sit on the board and the lack of engagement is disrespectful to say the least. The board needs to get back on the front foot with this issue and deliver something to the WA community that is tangible.
I understand the Western Force has not financially performed but RugbyWA has done more for the game in a short period of time than anyone one of you could have achieved or dreamed of. You have turned your back on the game itself. Think about that for a moment.
What happens next is important for us all. I urge you to work with staff at ARU and RugbyWA levels to ensure there ARE truly strong pathway programs in place, there IS support for community rugby at development and competition level, the Western Force IS reinstated and we ALL work towards a common vision for Australian Rugby.
I am here, there are good people here prepared to work hard for the game. I suggest you do the same and give some thought and purpose to the "what next" part of your role.
I am a supporter of the game and will always be but it is wearing very thin at the moment. If you are close to losing a person like myself how many others have you already lost and how many more will you lose in the future.
Yours in rugby

Dear Western Force Players,

I am sure you are being kept updated by Sinders and RWA in relation to the Appeal due to be heard next Wednesday 23 August. If the appeal is upheld then the Western Force will be retained.

I have been asked to send a personal message to you on behalf of Andrew Forrest. He has your back. He stands behind what he said on the field after the fabulous victory against the Waratahs. He will do whatever it takes to ensure the Western Force remain in the Super Rugby competition.

Today Andrew has sent a letter to the ARU Board offering his full support to the Western Force, RugbyWA and rugby in general: “Win or lose the appeal, my support for the Western Force will not waiver and action to overturn your irresponsible decision will continue”. Andrew has called on the ARU management to meet with him to discuss overturning the decision to exterminate the Western Force and to “assist” them in making the right decision. If the ARU will not meet with him Andrew, he has called for the entire Board to resign and be replaced with leaders who are willing to act in the best interests of Australian rugby.

Andrew also asked me to pass on in person to each and every ARU Director and the Chairman of NSW and QLD and ACT a simple message in addition to his letter: “I do not bluff. I never have. I never will. I will never give up”.

As a former player I understand the current uncertainty around your future will be difficult. I am confident we will be successful in changing this decision. What will assist is your representative body, RUPA, coming out strongly alongside Andrew and RugbyWA. If ever there was a time for a players association to be relevant it is when 20% of its membership are lined up and shot without due process and without just cause. Please send a clear message through your representatives and directly to RUPA that you expect them to come out strongly and publicly in support of retention of the Western Force. There is no justifiable reason for the need to cut a team. Australian rugby can survive and thrive with 5 Super Rugby teams and that is the obvious solution regardless of the Appeal outcome. RUPA is in a strong position to be relevant in making the ARU change their decision.

Andrew is fighting for you. I am fighting for you. Former RugbyWA Chairman and former ARU Director Geoff Stooke is fighting for you. RugbyWA is fighting for you. You, the players, need to get RUPA to fight for you.

Be One. Be Strong.

Go the Wallabies!

Regards

John Welborn

There's more at TWF, including -

Newlinds QC (Quade Cooper) and Alan Myers QC (Quade Cooper) are costing Andrew tens of thousands of dollars a day! They are both very confident in the appeal. Regardless, next they will with the WA government on a recovery claim for the $120 million the State Government invested in the NiB stadium renovation for the benefit of Super Rugby. And there is more coming - deceptive conduct litigation in relation to the “Alliance” agreement (nice title btw). But wait - there will be more. I promise you it will never ever end

Man, the fire is definitely being turned on now.

I recommend you go have a look at TWF - the posts there are extraordinary and excruciatingly private. I'm not even sure they should be reprinted elsewhere.

Oh don't worry, I have read them, it's very interesting what will come of it.

Forrest's letter ...

18 August 2017
Mr Cameron Clyne
Chairman
Australian Rugby Union
Ground Floor,29-57 Christie Street
St Leonards, NSW, 2065

Dear Chairman and ARU Board of Directors,

I am a major supporter of rugby and our national team, the Wallabies. I am also a philanthropist and
business leader who has become deeply concerned by your disrespectful behaviour to rugby, its national support base and blatant disregard for good governance.

You fabricated deception by stating you would meet me after the arbitration but instead chose to attempt to eliminate the Western Force the instant the arbitration concluded.

This cynical behaviour was met with an injunction to offer a final opportunity for a collaborative discussion. This was also met with rejection by you. You have consistently refused to release the “big spreadsheet” that purportedly supports your decision to eliminate the second best performing Australian Super Rugby side, with the fastest growing grass roots support base. It is already the third largest in Australia.

I have made it abundantly clear to the ARU, that my support extends nationally but is predicated on the national union conforming to the basic values of the game which seeks to nurture, support, and grow rugby on a national footprint.

This is not leadership. It is shockingly poor governance. The current crisis you have created is a neglect of your duties as Directors and a fundamental breach of your duties to the game.

As an Australian philanthropist and businessman, who is offering my full support to the Western Force, to RugbyWA and rugby generally in Australia, your approach to hiding behind litigation, instead of leadership, is personally and deeply upsetting to me. I do expect to be treated respectfully and I do not expect to be lied to, then repeatedly, denied an audience with you.

The continual refusal to consider alternative solutions to the short-sighted and morally corrupt process you have, secretly, undertaken to exterminate the Western Force, is a terrible indictment of your stewardship.

Next week, RugbyWA will contest in the New South Wales Supreme Court, the Arbitrator’s interpretation of the “Alliance Agreement” which you have used to attempt to terminate the Western Force and to avoid meeting with me. Rugby in Australia and Western Australia deserves a future unstained by your falsehoods and incompetence.

Win or lose the appeal, my support for the Western Force will not waiver and action to overturn your irresponsible decision will continue.

I remain willing to meet with you to confirm the future financial viability of the Western Force, and to assist you in making a decision that has the support of your members and the broader Australian public.

Chairman, if you continue to refuse to meet with me, and if the ARU Board are unwilling to compel
you, then I call on the Board to immediately resign and be replaced with leaders who are willing to
act in the best interest of Australian rugby.

Yours sincerely,
Andrew Forrest AO

So boyo, who is representing super rugby west of the great divide, pray tell?

That the Force is being cut is not about me. I don't think that the decision is good for Australian rugby. There should be a Super Rugby team in the west.

So, the petition is at 19 601 as of 9:47pm, can anyone confirm if this is more than the largest crowd attendance at a Aus Super Rugby game this year?
