Some of you guys have to be kidding.Who owns digby?
If he makes a choice to take more money in Japan for whatever reason. That is his right & his business. The days of playing for love are long gone. Those who think otherwise then maybe you should take a pay cut and do volunteer work. He doesn't put a limit on what you guys earn. So why do you get to moralise on how much he earns & from whom?

Hang on, nobody is really "moralising" about it, except Scarfy! ;). In any event, I think he was being nostalgic more than going all Andrew Bolt on his ass.
The question was why he needs, or feels he needs to support a load of siblings with his wage, which seems a bit odd, given they would all be young and probably able to earn a bit too. If he really wants to go to Japan, of course that is his business. I don't care how much he earns, and from whom. I'd be disappointed to see him go though.

What part are you finding difficult?

How about all of it?

I think he can do what he likes, frankly. If things were still like 1984 we'd be lamenting the death of the game in this country, as players would be doing what they'd done decades before that: playing rugby league. Face it, we all do what we do professionally for the money, at least in part. Very few do it for free and if Diggers feels that he can provide better for himself and his family elsewhere, then I don't think we are in a position to be too derisive of it.

With all of that said, I hope he stays. If he doesn't, c'est la vie.

After giving the Blues backline a bath on friday night I'd expect a pretty decent payrise from the ARU if I was Digby Ioane. He made Ranger & Rockococo look pretty average but to get that payrise he'll need to stay injury free & make the most of the Tri Nations series which is a series he has yet to play in due to injury.

Anyway I'll map it out for Digby he can go to Japan in 2012 for 1 season freshen up return to Oz in 2013 for the Lions tour & then stay on until the 2015 world cup.

I think that some folks are looking at this from an accustomed ethnic European view - and that some of them won't know what I am talking about.

Ethnic Islanders would understand their family paradigm better. Sitaleki Timani has made the same family decision as Digby.

It's days like these when I wish it was still 1984.

Is making money really that important to people? It makes me sad. I don't know anything about the Ioane family but do they have someone in an iron lung or something? Why can't they be poor and proud of Digby's achievements? What if he was an Olympic archer? No chance of making money ever, just pride in your achievements.

Blah!

If he was an Olympic archer he would not be generating anywhere near the revenue that a top rugby player generates for others. Not to mention that his career is much shorter as a rugby player.

I assume by your comment that you think it is better to be poor and not be able to look after your family properly? Surely you want the best for your own family and part of that is always a financial consideration whether you like it or not.

I would like to say more but I think it might be better in the politics section! :)

Think about it from this perspective. Your current employer offers you $350k a year and someone comes along and says I will give you $1m to do the same job. How many here criticizing him would be so idealistic and knock back the new offer.

As for the other wobs who have resigned. Don't be surprised if what they were offered was probably a lot closer to there offers from the ARU that has been speculated. Let's not compare apples and oranges.

It only just clicked to me what year scarfy picked. So maybe he is actually trying to reel a few fish in? At least I hope he doesn't think we'd be better off in Orwell's world!

Digby has already said this article is false, why are we still debating it..

No Scotty, I picked 1984 because we won the Grand Slam with amateurs (and I was weak-tackling centre for my school's 2nd XV), and I think in all my dealings with rugby there is a little echo of 1984 in there to keep me happy. My point about Olympic archers is that they are taking a few years out of their careers to achieve something for themselves and the country with no hope of remuneration.

I'm not exactly moralising about Digby - I've repeatedly said that he might have good reasons for prioritising money over having something to feel proud about - but it makes me sad. Sad, because there is a little less of 1984 in the rugby every year and it's making lose a little bit of interest every year.

For example, one of the reasons I actually give a fuck about SupeRugby is that the team I support is one of the two real teams in the comp - the rest are manufactured, with manufactured mascots such as Hurricanes and Forces. The fact that blokes have been wearing waratahs on their jerseys for 150 years actually matters to me.

Rugby is a pretty good sport - I like the way 15 players of very different sizes and skill sets work together as a unit. But just as important is the whole set of rugby ethics that go with the game. Those ethics make our game a bit different from league, or soccer, or tennis. And as each of those values falls to commercialism, I become less and less interested. You blokes do what you want.

What makes the Tahs less manufactured?

Existence prior to the creation of SupeRugby is the point Scarfie's trying to make I think, Slim.

The Tahs were a professional team made up of mostly out of state recruits in 1861?

I'm not trolling, that's just obviously not what I meant. I don't think that dates of origin or small things like mascots should be used against teams. I.e. at one point the Tahs were also new with not much history behind them. Believe it or not the history happens after inception. Have your proud tradition but don't begrudge or cheapen the chance of others to make theres.

It's just a shame that in 15 years of SupeRugby none of the 'real' teams have managed to win a 'real' trophy...
