Major loss for Australian rugby, but it's been on the cards since 2009. It was clear back then that setting up his family financially was important to him, and who am I to say otherwise? He made the good point in an interview that all it would take would be a single major injury and all of his earning potential could go out the window.

The silver lining is that he's young. He could very well play for 2 years in Japan and be back in Aus by 2014. Let's hope so.

What he puts his body through means it is likely he will have a shortened career. He probably sees this as his best option while he is at his peak to make the big dollars. Good chance he will come back to the reds at some stage if his body is going well.

Will free up a lot of money to pay O'Connor.

His departure would probably be a greater loss to the Wobs than Reds. It would be nice if the desire is there he could return before the next world cup.

It's days like these when I wish it was still 1984.

Is making money really that important to people? It makes me sad. I don't know anything about the Ioane family but do they have someone in an iron lung or something? Why can't they be poor and proud of Digby's achievements? What if he was an Olympic archer? No chance of making money ever, just pride in your achievements.

Blah!

He should already be getting a decent amount of money. He should be chasing Wallaby success first.

When you don't have any, yes it is. The days of wearing "poor but proud" as a badge of honour are long gone. From all reports Digby is the breadwinner - more of a cultural thing than anything else apparently, and he takes it seriously.

What kind of income is a top Australian winger on anyway? 200-300k?

To keep things in perspective, I think when he says family, he is talking about his parents and his siblings, which number something like 8 or 9 in total. Even currently, I understand his salary is paid to his sister who then gives him an allowance, and last I heard this was something like $100 a week!

A little off topic, but I was surprised to read that Ioane had only played 11 Tests. I thought he'd played way more than that.

He has come out and said it's not true and he won't make any decision until after the test matches

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fccnRtJ4Evk. does this $100 a week salary enable him to have a beautiful apartment and a BMW?

Quote - "He is the principal breadwinner for an extended family. Well done to him for putting them first if the story is true."

Here's a novel idea!
Why don't the extended family get a job?
Surely the 8 or 9 siblings of young working age are capable of a little labour or have they all retired at the AGE OF 23 TO ALLOW Digby to carry them all.

If a minimum of $300,000 - $400,000 per year isn't enough to get by on these days there is something drastically wrong.

Are his siblings unable to work? Do they have no ambition / talent / aspiration of their own, or are they all sitting back waiting for Digby to strike it rich? I'mm all for supporting the family if needs be, but FFS, they are all young, so have the opportunity to earn for themselves, and one would hope the desire to do it too.
Sounds like Khoder Nasser style bullshit to hype a contract negotiation to me, and if so, call his bluff!

Article in SMH quotes Digby saying he will not make ANY decision on his future till after the World Cup. This is just another rumour started by an agent or a journalist and should be treated as such.

I'll believe he's moving when it's confirmed, half these reports that the news publishes about players signing overseas are bullshit and are usually to get the player more money or because the paper has nothing better to report on.
