Remember Conrad Jantjes?

Conrad-Jantjes-Looks-110226G300.jpg

Talk about his second change in rugby at WeePee (Stormers)

Conrad Jantjes - second chance
Conrad Jantjes thought his professional career was over in 2009. But now he's a key part of the DHL WP side 'I am enjoying the role of being the experienced player in a young backline and leading the troops from the back'
Two years ago Conrad Jantjes was playing the best rugby of his life. He was the starting fullback for the Stormers and Western Province while he was also part of the Springbok set-up heading into the British & Irish Lions tour. Suddenly, it was all taken away from him during a Super Rugby match against the Chiefs in Hamilton when he broke his leg in an unfortunate clash.

'I'll never forget that moment. I heard my bone snap and knew immediately something had gone horribly wrong,' recalls Jantjes. 'The incident happened after coming up with a special plan during midweek video analysis.

'I picked up that a common move the Chiefs made was for flyhalf Stephen Donald to kick an up-and-under towards wing Sitiveni Sivivatu's corner in order to create a scoring opportunity. But with fullback Mils Muliaina up in the line, I knew that if I kicked the ball forward in the air, I'd have space behind their defence to create a counter-attack. With my football skills, I knew I could pull it off.

'When it happened my plan started out perfectly. My foot connected the ball sweetly and I was chasing it into space. I also had Schalk Burger on my outside for support, but flanker Liam Messam was coming in fast as cover defence. I went in for the slide, thinking I could just pop the ball for Schalla to put him through. But as I slid in, Messam dived in too and his body crashed into my leg. And that was that.'

Doctors confirmed moments later that Jantjes had broken his leg and would be sidelined for a year at least. He missed the following Currie Cup and Super Rugby campaigns as he underwent extensive rehabilitation. Jantjes calls it 'the darkest period in my career' but it also proved to have a positive influence on him.

'Picking up a serious injury like that was a very difficult experience. I won't even wish it on my worst enemy,' says Jantjes. 'I couldn't walk for the first 12 weeks. Afterwards, I was training on my own in the gym before starting rehab with our conditioning coach. I thought my only way back into rugby was to play at club level.

'Funnily enough, however, that long lay-off was good for me mentally and personally. I had a break from the game and could do things I wasn't able to do before, like travel around and spend most of my time with my family - especially my niece who has me around her little finger. I also wasn't hard on myself anymore. After making mistakes, especially early in the match, I would be angry with myself and that affected me mentally. But that is no longer the case. When I found out I had the chance to fight my way into the Province squad again, I wasn't hard on myself and didn't allow any criticism to get to me. My whole attitude changed and saw many things in a different light. I had a second chance, and was going to make full use of it.'

Jantjes spent his first several weeks of contact practice with the conditioning coach before practicing with the WP U21s during 2010 Super Rugby. He then made his miracle comeback during last year's Currie Cup campaign and made his first appearance in a domestic final against the Sharks.

'Although things didn't go our way in that match and we lost, it was the highlight of my career. From thinking my pro career was over to making the starting line-up in the final. I'll admit, my eyes were tearing in the changing room.'

In this year's Currie Cup campaign, DHL WP have lost a bulk of their senior players to the Springbok World Cup squad. With the likes of Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana and Jaque Fourie in New Zealand, Jantjes became the senior player in the backline.

'I am enjoying the role of being the experienced player in a young backline and leading the troops from the back. In fact, most of these players I play alongside, like Danie Poolman, JJ Engelbrecht and Johann Sadie, were part of the U21 squad I trained with during my rehab and I became close with them then.

'But the great thing about this WP side is that we don't see each other as senior or junior players. We're all the same. We will consult things together and everybody has a say. For example, I'll even go up to Demetri Catrakilis and ask his thoughts about something. That close relationship and trust between the players has helped us to perform well. In fact, looking at the way this young team is excelling in the Currie Cup means that the future of WP rugby is bright. I believe we can make many more Currie Cup finals, and I want to be a part of that.'

The Bulls have been poor.

Dark days ahead in Super Rugby.

Dont agree OuBoet. The season is only past halfway and the Brutes and WeePee push those youngsters. Sadie and JJ go north next season and sure have climb this season. Also think Venter, the SA U20 midfielder and Fouche the Lui Perd flyhalf look like good talents.

Week 12 Review
Absa Currie Cup Review - Week 12
The MTN Golden Lions booked their place in the top four of the Absa Currie Cup when they fought back to clinch an unlikely draw against the Toyota Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday. By moving up to 45 log points, the Golden Lions ensured they will play in their first semifinal in the Premier Division for the first time since 2008.
Later on Saturday, DHL Western Province moved back into the top four on the log with a well-deserved 15-10 victory over The Sharks in a scrappy match in Durban.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls and GWK Griquas have both kept their play-off aspirations alive with bonus point victories over the Ford Pumas and Platinum Leopards respectively.

In the Absa Currie Cup First Division, the Regent Boland Cavaliers have finished top of the standings after the league phase of the competition, while the Valke snuck into the semifinals thanks to a late try against the Border Bulldogs in East London.

In the semifinals, the Cavaliers will host the Tasol Solar Griffons in Wellington and the Valke will travel to Port Elizabeth to take on the defending champions, the EP Kings.

Vodacom Blue Bulls 47 (28) Ford Pumas 12 (7)

The Vodacom Blue Bulls secured only their third try scoring bonus point when they beat the Ford Pumas by 47-12 in an action packed Absa Currie Cup encounter at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Friday evening.

The home team scored six tries in total as they remained in contention for the Absa Currie Cup semifinals, moving into the top four for 24 hours before DHL WP's victory over The Sharks in Durban pushed the Blue Bulls back to fifth again.

The Ford Pumas were left to rue some bad discipline, when they had to play with 13 players briefly early in the second half when first Ashley Buys (prop) and then Willem Serfontein (lock) were yellow carded in quick succession.

It was only the second time this season the Pumas were thoroughly beaten and is testament to their performances of 2011, where they've won two games thus far and made most teams work very hard to beat them.

Louis Fouché, the Vodacom Blue Bulls' young pivot, scored 22 points, while the current SA U20 captain, Arno Botha, was amongst the try-scorers for the home team.

Scorers:

Vodacom Blue Bulls - Tries : Flip van der Merwe, Louis Fouché, CJ Stander, Francois Venter, Arno Botha, Bjorn Basson. Conversions: Fouché (4). Penalties: Fouché (3).

Ford Pumas - Tries : Jaco Bouwer, Marius Coetzer. Conversion: Coenie van Wyk.

Toyota Free State Cheetahs 25 (15) MTN Golden Lions 25 (5)

Two late converted tries with an opponent in the sin bin saw the MTN Golden Lions snatch an unlikely 25-25 draw at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday afternoon.

With five minutes to go, the Toyota Free State Cheetahs were ahead by 25-11 and seemingly on their way to their third consecutive victory against a higher-placed team on the Absa Currie Cup log, but when Tewis de Bruyn (replacement scrumhalf) was yellow carded, the Golden Lions cut loose and scored two converted tries - by replacement prop Jacobie Adriaanse and left wing Michael Killian - to level the scores.

The visitors from Johannesburg scored three tries to the one of the Cheetahs, whose SA U20 flyhalf Johan Goosen kept the scoreboard ticking over with his accurate goal kicking. He scored 15 points through four penalty goals and a dropped goal, while young scrumhalf Piet van Zyl scored the home team's only try in the second half.

His direct opponent and last year's SA U20 flyhalf, Elton Jantjes, struggled with the boot and only kicked four out of eight kicks at goal, with 11 possible points left on the table for the Golden Lions.

It was the second time in a month that the Toyota Free State Cheetahs drew a match after conceding a heap of points late in the game. On 10 September, the Vodacom Blue Bulls clawed their way back from 12-22 to draw 22-22 with a late converted try and a penalty goal, also in Bloemfontein.

Platinum Leopards 23 (10) GWK Griquas 38 (3)
Five second half tries saw GWK Griquas keep alive their slim hopes of reaching the Absa Currie Cup semifinals when they beat the gutsy Platinum Leopards by 38-23 at Profert Olën Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday afternoon.

After 40 minutes, the home team still lead by 10-3, but then GWK Griquas coach Abré Minnie sent up scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius, who scored his team's first try minutes after taking to the field.

After that followed a mini-avalanche of two more tries, by left wing Rocco Jansen and flyhalf Riaan Viljoen, as the team from the Northern Cape stamped their authority on the match. The Leopards managed to stop Griquas try scoring exploits and hit back with a second try of their own, but the visitors finally cut loose with two more tries late in the match.

Wesley Dunlop scored 16 points for the Leopards through a try, a conversion, two penalties and a drop-goal.

The Sharks 10 (7) DHL Western Province 15 (7)

DHL Western Province scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage scored a late try to go with his penalty goal that helped seal a 15-10 Absa Currie Cup victory over the defending champions, The Sharks, at Mr Price Kings Park in Durban on Saturday evening.

It was a scrappy match that was played in very windy conditions, with The Sharks struggling to convert an early advantage mainly because of unforced errors and good defence by WP.

Jean Deysel, who was moved to lock in a shuffled Sharks line-up shortly before kick-off, got the home team on the board with a try in the tenth minute and while it looked like The Sharks had the ascendancy upfront, they could not score any more points. In fact, it took them another hour before they troubled the scorers again, when replacement flyhalf Fred Michalak levelled the scores at 10-10 with a penalty goal.

WP took their chances in the difficult circumstances, with Danie Poolman (right wing) scoring a well-worked converted try to level the scores at 7-7 shortly before the break. Duvenage's penalty put the visitors ahead midway through the second half.

Just as it looked like the game was headed for a draw, he hacked through a loose ball and scored the match winner with three minutes left in a game that will probably not be remembered for the right reasons.

Scorers :

The Sharks - Try : Jean Deysel. Conversion: Meyer Bosman. Penalty: Fred Michalak.

DHL Western Province - Tries : Danie Poolman, Dewaldt Duvenage. Conversion: Lionel Cronje. Penalty: Duvenage.

Absa Currie Cup First Division

The Regent Boland Cavaliers secured their place at the top of the Absa Currie Cup First Division standings with an emphatic 53-24 victory over the SWD Eagles at Outeniqua Park in George on Friday and will host the Tasol Solar Griffons in the semifinals.

The EP Kings and the Valke will contest the other semifinal after the East Randers snuck into third position after an exciting last round of matches, thanks to a 34-31 victory over the Border Bulldogs at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London, also on Friday.

While the result in the match between the Eagles and Cavaliers was according to the form book - Boland and EP were in a class of their own this season and completely dominated the First Division, each losing only one match the entire season - the Valke had to erase a 21-point deficit to go through to the playoffs.

At halftime, the Bulldogs were leading by 21-10, which they stretched to 31-10 midway through the second half. But four tries in the final half hour - two of them in the final seven minutes - saw the Valke sneak past to take the win and a place in the semifinals.

The match-winner was scored by replacement wing Kyle Hendricks after the team from Kempton Park won a turnover, quickly swung the ball left as Hendricks beat the cover defence to score the Valke's most important try of 2011.10.02

In George, Elgar Watts contributed 23 points as Boland crushed the Eagles, with Willie le Roux adding two tries to the visitors' impressive tally.

The exact dates and times of the two semifinals will be confirmed on www.sarugby.co.za. The Regent Boland Cavaliers will play the Tasol Solar Griffons in Wellington, and the EP Kings will host the Valke in Port Elizabeth.

Weekend scorers :

SWD Eagles 24 (17) Regent Boland Cavaliers 53 (22)

Gave WP no change on the weekend and regarding fielding 15 U19/21 players so far in their CC team they beat a Sharks team chock and block with test veterans on the weekend.

Paarl how is JP going for province?

He hardly got any game time at the rebels, then got cut for the new season due to midfield depth. Would have liked to see him play a bit more as he had big wraps on him when the roosters signed him for rugby league.

How close is he to cracking the currie cup team at WP?

So our U21s have a real Aussie flavour at the moment. WP have lost midfielders:
Jean de Villiers, Jac Fourie & Juan de Jongh (Springbokke)
Tim Whitehead injured Bosch to France and Johann Sadie two weeks back. I am pretty impress with our current duo M Brache (played koshuis rugby at Ikeys when called up for their Varsity Cup and now pretty impressive. Can play 15 also) and Berton Klaasen (had such an impressive debut against the Sharks last week with a Bosman/Jacobs/Joubert combo that he kept his place) Pretty sure JP will be the next one in and have a great future after Sadie moving north.

[quote title=Quote:]Absa Currie Cup Review – Week 13
October 09, 2011
In a weekend of joy and heartbreak in the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division as the log-leading MTN Golden Lions clinched first position with one round left to play thanks to a great victory over DHL Western Province.
On the other side of the spectrum, GWK Griquas won a great match against the Vodacom Blue Bulls, all but knocking the team from Pretoria out of the competition.

While they still have a mathematical chance to qualify for the semifinals, the Blue Bulls and Griquas have to rely on a favour from the Ford Pumas next weekend. If the team in light blue don’t make it through, it will be the first time since 2001 that they don’t qualify for the knock-out phase of the Absa Currie Cup.

The Sharks and the Toyota Free State Cheetahs also qualified for the semifinals and next weekend’s final round of league action will determine which of these two teams will have home ground advantage.

Absa Currie Cup final round fixtures:

Friday, 14 October

19:10: Vodacom Blue Bulls vs Platinum Leopards – Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria

Saturday, 15 October

15:00: Toyota FS Cheetahs vs GWK Griquas – Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein

17:05: DHL Western Province vs Ford Pumas – DHL Newlands, Cape Town

19:10: The Sharks vs MTN Golden Lions – Mr Price Kings Park, Durban

Ford Pumas 23 (7) Toyota Free State Cheetahs 29 (13)

A late yellow card to lock Eduan van der Walt probably cost the Ford Pumas as the Toyota Free State Cheetahs scored two tries against only 14 defenders to win this pulsating Absa Currie Cup match at the Puma Stadium in Witbank by 29-23.

When Van der Walt was sent to the sin bin in the 72nd minute, the Pumas were leading by 23-17 and on their way to a famous upset. But the Free Staters knuckled down as Sias Ebersohn and Andries Strauss scored late tries to seal the victory.

Like they’ve done for most of the 2011 season, the Pumas fought well above their weight and again came agonisingly close to beating a more-fancied opponent. They lead 13-7 at the break and even though the Cheetahs fought back, the home side extended their lead to 23-17 midway through the second half.

After this bonus point victory, the Cheetahs briefly moved into second position on the log, but they were down to third again on Saturday after The Sharks beat the Platinum Leopards in Phokeng.

Scorers:

Ford Pumas – Tries: Dewald Pretorius, Jaco Bouwer. Conversions: Carl Bezuidenhout (2). Penalties: Bezuidenhout (3).

Toyota Free State Cheetahs – Tries: Philip van der Walt, Marcel van der Merwe, Sias Ebersohn, Andries Strauss. Conversions: Sias Ebersohn (3). Penalty: Sias Ebersohn.

Teams:

Ford Pumas: 15 MJ Mentz, 14 Wilhelm Loock, 13 JW Jonker, 12 Dewald Pretorius, 11 Johan Jackson, 10 Carl Bezuidenhout, 9 Shaun Venter, 8 Christo le Roux, 7 Jaco Bouwer, 6 Corné Steenkamp (captain), 5 Eduan van der Walt, 4 JP Mostert, 3 Ashley Buys, 2 Pellow van der Westhuizen, 1 Dawie Steyn. Replacements: 16 Brett Nel, 17 Michael de Neuilly-Rice, 18 RW Kember, 19 Nico Mostert, 20 Hendrik van der Nest, 21 Coenie van Wyk, 22 Siviwe Magaba.

GWK Griquas 48 (27) Vodacom Blue Bulls 44 (22)

GWK Griquas effectively ended the Vodacom Blue Bulls’ semifinal charge and at the same time kept alive their own slim hopes of reaching the playoffs when they won a high-scoring match by 48-44 at GWK Park in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams scored six tries each, with Matthew Rosslee and Rocco Jansen both crossing twice for the home side and former Griquas wing Bjorn Basson, now in the colours of the Blue Bulls, also got a brace.

The visitors started both the first and second halves stronger, but each time they failed to keep up the pressure and Griquas fought back. The Bulls Blue lead 15-3 at one stage in the first half only to go into the break trialling 22-27.

Early in the second half the visitors were again rampant, even though their captain, Gary Botha, was sin-binned, and tries to Jano Vermaak and Jacques Potgieter saw them go ahead by 39-27, but three tries between the 60th and 70th minutes broke the Blue Bulls and gave Griquas the momentum.

The Blue Bulls made way too many unforced errors and even though they came back with a late try to secure two bonus points, it wasn’t enough.

Scorers:

GWK Griquas – Tries: Rudi Vogt, Rocco Jansen (2), Dusty Noble, Matthew Rosslee (2). Conversions: Vogt (6). Penalties: Vogt (2).

Vodacom Blue Bulls – Tries: Bjorn Basson (2), Akona Ndungane, Jano Vermaak, Jacques Potgieter (2). Conversions: Louis Fouché (4). Penalty: Fouché. Drop goal: Fouché.

Teams:

GWK Griquas: 15 Rudi Vogt, 14 Dusty Noble, 13 Wilmaure Louw, 12 Matthew Rosslee, 11 Rocco Jansen, 10 Riaan Viljoen, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Leon Karemaker, 7 Justin Downey, 6 Jonathan Mokuena (captain), 5 George Earle, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Lourens Adriaanse, 2 Ryno Barnes, 1 Ivann Espag. Replacements: 16 Simon Westraadt, 17 Steph Roberts, 18 Jaco Nepgen, 19 Burger Schoeman, 20 Marnus Hugo, 21 Earl Rose, 22 Fabian Juries.

Vodacom Blue Bulls: 15 Gerhard van Heever, 14 Akona Ndungane, 13 Wynand Olivier, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Bjorn Basson, 10 Louis Fouché, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 CJ Stander, 7 Jacques Potgieter, 6 Deon Stegmann, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Flip van der Merwe, 3 Werner Kruger, 2 Gary Botha (captain), 1 Dean Greyling. Replacements: 16 Willie Wepener, 17 Frik Kirsten, 18 Gerrit-Jan van Velze, 19 Arno Botha, 20 Dustin Jinka, 21 Francois Brummer, 22 Warwick Tecklenburg.

MTN Golden Lions 42 (20) DHL Western Province 25 (9)

Five tries to one tell the full story as the MTN Golden Lions secured first place on the Absa Currie Cup log with a solid 42-25 victory over DHL Western Province at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

SA Under-20 fullback Jaco Taute got two of the Golden Lions’ tries as they won the game in all facets of play.

Both hookers, Bandise Maku and his replacement Martin Bezuidenhout, also scored before Derick Minnie rounded off a good performance for the home team with a bullocking run to score after the hooter had sounded.

By contrast, DHL WP had to rely on the boot of their flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis to keep the scoreboard ticking over until Deon Fourie scored against the run of play in the 67th minute.

A bonus point victory next weekend in Cape Town over the Ford Pumas would be enough for DHL Western Province to advance to the semifinals, while the Golden Lions will have to wait to see who finishes fourth for their semifinal in Johannesburg.

Scorers:

MTN Golden Lions – Tries: Bandise Maku, Jaco Taute (2), Martin Bezuidenhout, Derick Minnie. Conversions: Elton Jantjies (4). Penalties: Jantjies (3).

DHL Western Province – Try: Deon Fourie. Conversion: Demetri Catrakilis. Penalties: Catrakilis (5). Drop goal: Catrakilis.

Teams:

MTN Golden Lions: 15 Jaco Taute, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Doppies la Grange, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Warren Whiteley, 7 Joshua Strauss (captain), 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Michael Rhodes, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Bandise Maku, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg. Platinum Leopards 14 (0) The Sharks 41 (15)

The score was big at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng on Saturday evening as The Sharks beat the Platinum Leopards by 41-14 in the final Absa Currie Cup game of the weekend.

And even though The Sharks kept alive their chances of a home semifinal, their victory perhaps wasn’t as impressive as the score board showed, after they got two converted tries in the final three minutes when the physicality and intensity of the match clearly took its toll on the home team.

Nonetheless, The Sharks still scored six tries to the two of the Platinum Leopards, of which the second-half effort by Namibian Rugby World Cup winger Danie Dames was probably the best of the night.

Jean Deysel, again playing at lock, was probably the pick of the players on a night where Stefan Terblanche became the first player in history to record 100 games at Absa Currie Cup and Vodacom Super Rugby level for one provincial union.

Scorers:

Platinum Leopards – Tries: Johann Laker, Danie Dames. Conversions: Wesley Dunlop (2).

Will be interesting to see which Bokke will be returning to CC rugby. WP sure need to use JdJ and Aplon at the very least.

Die Burger
"Cape Town - While the Springboks remain on course to become the first team to successfully defend the Webb Ellis Cup, the local scene is hotting up as well with the Currie Cup approaching its own playoff stage.

The final of the Currie Cup takes place on October 29, one week after the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup final in Auckland. If the Springboks are to go on to feature in that match, they will in all likelihood not be available to represent their respective provinces the following week, should they have reached the Currie Cup final.

However, there is the notion that if the Wallabies were to advance to the semi-final at the expense of the Boks, that it would add a welcome boost to the currently 'Bok-less' Currie Cup heading into the business end of the season.

According to Wednesday’s Die Burger, SARU commerical manager Andy Marinos stated that should the Boks endure an early elimination, they will be available for their provincial teams immediately without needing to rest, as they would be playing during the same period of time if they were still in New Zealand.
One team which has been reeling after the departure of players to the Bok squad, combined with the growing list of injuries, is Western Province.

Province have eight of their players in the Springbok squad in New Zealand and have already lost 20 players this season through injury.

Should they make it to the Currie Cup semi-finals, the early eliminated Boks will be motivated by the fact that they will have some glory to play for, albeit in consolation to the biggest prize in world rugby.

Cape Town - Western Province coach Allister Coetzee confirmed that all their returning Springboks will be available for their important Currie Cup clash against the Pumas at Newlands on Saturday.

Die Burger newspaper reports that Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie, Gio Aplon, Juan de Jongh and Bryan Habana have all made themselves available for selection.

Coetzee said he would have understood if some of them were not keen to play so soon after returning from the World Cup in New Zealand.

"Man, I barely started talking when all of them said - like one man - they want to be part of our Currie Cup campaign. All six are thus available (for Saturday)," said Coetzee.

De Jongh only returned to Cape Town on Wednesday evening - and has subsequently not trained with the team yet.

Coetzee lauded the commitment and character of his Springboks for making themselves available and believes the heartbreak in New Zealand will make them hungry for Currie Cup success with WP.

"Our Boks have something to play for. It's also a chance to make up for last year's disappointment in the final (against the Sharks)," said Coetzee.

Province must win against the Pumas to ensure they qualify for the semi-finals, and might need a bonus point victory if the Blue Bulls beat the Leopards by a large margin.

They are currently in fourth position on the log standings, with 36 points - one ahead of the Blue Bulls. WP's points difference (71) is also far more superior to that of the Bulls (13).

Thus, barring a huge Blue Bulls victory over the Leopards, Province would only need to claim four points against the Pumas on Saturday.

They will also have the added advantage of knowing exactly what they need to do when their game kicks off - as the men from Pretoria have their game scheduled for Friday evening at Loftus Versfeld.
