To beat the Crusaders especially at home you need a bit of luck. Sure the Reds had their chances, the lineout (again) was poor, they kicked from hand and the tee poorly but I also think those two blatent professional fouls had an impact on the match. Both occured within 10m of the Crusaders tryline with the Reds hot on attack and both should have been yellow cards.

You don't need luck. You need a solid line-out, goal kicker and maul.

Well spotted.
The Mounga tackle-whilst-on-the-ground was visible to touchie so it's an even more irritating moment.

I was wondering why that wasn't picked up, but then recalled that almost never are anymore, I recall a test last year where a player on his knees did same thing!
In saying that I pretty sure there were a few things went both ways , and although Reds gave it a redhot shot, I suspect if any of the kicks went over they may have lost it anyway. There lineout at times is woeful, and decision making horrendus.

I’m in Melbourne on business, still haven’t seen the game gutted we didn’t get it done - but stoked that we are playing so competitively. The is the beginnings of a very good side.

Hard to fathom why Campbell is kicking. And when he handed the duties over, it wasn’t to Stewart or Lucas, but to Malolua who didn’t seem any better (albeit off a sample of 1). Equally hard to fathom what is happening with the lineout. The Reds just seem so easy for other teams to pick. Not often you get a chance to roll the Crusaders at home and they were ripe for the picking.

Despite all this I must say I am still enjoying watching the Reds. I am disappointed that they are losing but there is some really good stuff going on. Stewart has found his spot at 12, Salakai-Loto seems to be kicking on with his play, Speight has found a new lease of life and Wilson & Campbell were outstanding.

Special mention to Tupou. I thought he was a bit subdued last week but his form this year has been exceptional. He has really increased his work rate and the quality of his work is still there.

I dunno - sure I’d love to be winning and it is especially frustrating when things like goal kicking and the lineout are letting them down (with that forward pack the lineout should be as good as anyone’s) but you can see the players are working hard and there are parts of their game that are the best they have been since 2011.

CruSadists have fallen into the trap of trying to play the footy they WANT to play rather than the footy they NEED to play. Hopefully the Tribe loss & Reds near-loss will cause them to re-think things & get back to playing meat & potatoes from kickoff & gravy if & when the match situation allows. Sure it's probably a bit boring but winning is the best boredom antidote there is.

@waiopehu, this new crop of Crusaders look a little arrogant with their play. It's like they feel they will win so they can fling it around a little whilly nilly. Even Richie Mo'unga is being overly cute at times. I think they really miss some of the old heads like of Read and Whitelock who would do the meat and potatoes as you put it. Some of those passes were beyond poor, and the silliness at the rucks really lacked some of the professionalism of the past.


All that said, boy could I watch Goodhue all day. I think that time with Sonny Bill in the AB's has paid off because some of those offloads are gems.

I think its pretty outstanding how good Topou and AAA are.. they both are putting in massive shifts but not lacking at the end of games..I wish all our players for the wallabies where like those 2..

Interestingly in the Aus V USA 7s game this morning a USA player was carded for this
