I suspect Knuckles will be the "safety net" for a young bloke like Taylor who is well respected by the players.

Nick is likewise respected and has already been re-signed.

I reckon the choice will be between them...

Yep but I question why Knuckles was employed to end of 2016.

Agreed it makes no sense. It appears the safety net is not for the new HC but for the board in case they f$%k up again!!!

Regarding selection process no different to senior appointment at any company - how often are a bunch of unknowns interviewed based on credentials alone. Its a combination of who you know and their competency - or in other words, most suitable person that you know of. Unfortunately one of those components wasn't properly assessed in the current case.

I am a bit concerned by how Matt O'Connor departed Leinster.

Crusader fans don't seem too enamored with Todd Blackadder, which is extremely harsh considering his record. I'd be giving every hint possible that we were very keen if I had a say in it (which I don't).

Without a hesitation x2.

There was no difference between how link was employed and how RG was employed. An 'open and transparent' (whatever that means) search isn't going to find a better coach.

But when the integrity of the process and some board members have been called into question and open allegations of nepotism have been made only either foolish or blindly arrogant managers will take a path that is not open and transparent.

Open and transparent generally means seeking applications/expression of interest, with clear selection criteria. Same as any job application.

You do know the meaning of nepotism don't you?
Which family member has benefited at the QRU?

Kind of like the calls of McCall hiring his old wallaby mate McKenzie?

the practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.

If you want to be a pedant at least keep up with the modern usage of language. The original usage of the noun was indeed used to describe favours for relatives, especially the appointment of nephews, sons etc as Cardinals in the Catholic church. However the modern Oxford dictionary has expanded the meaning to encompass the relationships beyond the familial.

I agree with this. You don't go to open tender when you know what the market looks like. You approach a number of potential providers and invite them to apply.

Following a full open process here is a waste of time and resources, for what would potentially be the same outcome. Much better to approach a number of preferred candidates.

Most of the folks who actually care about the level of transparency given in the appointment process are on this forum. Like was already said, the selection process is very unlikely to be any different than if it was done with the QRU sending out daily updates - which is never going to happen.

The majority of the fanbase will just be happy that RG is out and the appointment of a new coach ASAP is the primary thing that the QRU likely is (and should be) concerned with - the only thing nearly as bad as keeping RG would be waiting weeks or longer to announce and instate the new HC.

Your average punter is just going to want to see a change that can be marketed to them as a positive one, how the ballots were cast or the interviews were conducted isn't even going to be an afterthought for most.

There are other reasons that an appointment should be made with some haste that have already been covered by others in this thread.

I'd hope that part of the "review" process was a smokescreen to run through the process of receiving and reviewing any submissions for the position that the QRU has received or requested over the season. Even that is complete, baseless postulation on what the QRU may or may not be doing (who generally do seem to function with a level of transparency relative to that of the Illuminati), which there is a lot of in this thread

Saying all that, the fevered speculation and media leaks re Matt O'Connor and Stiles as hot candidates to immediately take over fills me with grave concern that a thoughtless urgency and the seeming comfort of being able to instantly announce a new HC have taken the place of a really sound, patient HC discovery and selection process of quality.

We may well be about to witness a second failure of institutional capability within the QRU as another truly worrying sign that little has been learnt from one of the worst head coaching appointments every made in Australian rugby.

The absolute necessity of getting a coach who was well-regarded at his previous position should knock O'Connor out of the running immediately. You'd have to say even Blackadder has had his critics, but his sides have consistently made finals for a number of years. They went within inches of winning the Super Rugby last year. O'Connor's record is nowhere near as good.

And again McKenzie was fired from his previous 2 positions.

I seriously doubt that Toddy will be fired for missing the playoffs by one table point & I just can't conceive of him walking out with a year left on his contract, cut him & he'd bleed red & black.

So where does that leave us Strewthcobber?

The process must not be able to be questioned? Unless it works out well in which case it doesn't matter about the process?

Just got to hire a coach that will succeed then. Easy.
