What's Bill Millard doing? From memory he has done well with each coaching appointment undertaken (no notable failures stand out).

Not sure about Tim Lane, I know he won a premiership with Manly in 1998, apart from that all his success seems to have come as an assistant coach.

Yeah but quite allot of success though = RWCs.
BTW it was '97 with Manly.
Who was the last team Big Bird coached.
I follow good rugby, not Super 15 teams so please don't let the state blur your thoughts.

Lane has 2 titles as head coach with 2 different French d2 sides as well. He's also not a part of the qld old boys network which is looking more and more like a positive atm.

And possibly a few marquee contacts as well.
When link started back i recall Braid be an integral part with experienced head on shoulders - do i recall correctly.

It's all relative (and interrelated). Tim Lane was a padawan apprentice in the insurance caper to the ultimate Qld old boy in Bob Templeton. Played eight seasons at the maroons.

He's a good coach but does tend to get sacked a bit. He's had a long journeying career:

1997 Manly
2000–01 Clermont Ferrand
2003 Golden Cats
2005–06 Ricoh Black Rams
2007–08 Toulon
2008–10 Georgia
2011–12 Manly
2013–15 Lyon OU

(and that doesn't even include consultant/assistant roles) If you like reading the tea leaves from second division results and want an Aussie coach, I'd go for a younger man, someone like Darren Coleman.

Otherwise, if money is no object, get on the World Cup churn and go for a big name.

Who knows, Cheika might even be available. o_O

(Just joking, people. No need to ban me)

^^^ Is it not blindingly clear that, if the QRU change from RG in 2023, it cannot afford yet another 'experiment' in ill-considered risk-taking or 'needs a mentor and will grow into the role' or 'will do better here than before with our better players' or 'ready for the next step up' type of coach.

One disaster is barely manageable; two in sequence would be catastrophic.

If the sustained and sustainable economic and commercial prosperity of the QRU is the abiding goal, and a wise QRU board emerges, the ONLY sensible policy is to allocate funds and commitment to gaining a top-tier, genuinely proven coach who's won at least one or ideally multiple major titles somewhere.

As I have 'voted' for many times, a coach of Dave Rennie or Wayne Smith's standard is what is essential for the QRU's survival, not merely desirable.

Maybe once Link has finished building in Christchurch he can start building QLD

I'll put the house on Link not coaching in this country again as soon as I can find a bookie that will take it. Then I'll see if he will take the car on not coaching again, anywhere, ever. Period.

I agree unfortunately - media exposure.

I'd take that bet, maybe not at Super Rugby level but I could see him coach club level - Randwick.

Yep Stiles staying was leaked a little while back...

Fantastic news about the reappointment of Damian Marsh, he turned the Reds S&C department around a few years back and had the Reds as one of the fittest teams in the comp.. His oversight should see a massive improvement..

I was hoping that Brad Thorn would be appointed team manager to fill a similar role to that performed by Gilbert Enoka for the All Blacks.

I'm a tad confused what Thorn's actual role is? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he has a wealth of knowledge that he's acquired. With Marsh coming back, is Thron just acting as his offsider helping?

Reds Elite Development Squad Forwards Coach.

So basically a specialist forwards coach. I imagine he will be used to mentor the younger greener pigs and also probably work on key areas as they identified.

Me likey.

Looks like he will be the forwards coach for the elite development squad (pretty much young guys/colts the reds think will make the grade), a position which hasn't existed until now. pretty much the bottom rung of the Reds staff while he learns how to coach.

Jason Gilmore and Paul Carozza also (still?) part of the EDS set up.

I wonder if Thorn will be given a more senior role with one of the NRC teams seeing as Meehan is leaving?

I guess if they hire a new attack coach prior to then they might take that role on but otherwise it seems a good place for Thorn to gain some coaching experience.

I'm sure he will be involved in some form, likely as an assistant coach with the potential to assume a head coach role in 2016..

Some coaching news for the Reds in 2016:

Stiles for anther 3 years, Damian Marsh back for S & C

http://www.redsrugby.com.au/News/Ne...pointments-to-high-performance-structure.aspx

It's a step in the right direction.

I am intrigued by the final sentence of that press release though: "there will be further announcements regarding the coaching structure of the Reds and player retention in the coming weeks". Could this mean that Graham is about to be shown the door?

Yeah it'll probably depend on the rest of the coaching set up. That said if his main role is to coach the young forwards as a wider group they may want to keep him unattached, having him working with all the NRC forwards, rather than just one set of them. It'll also probably depend on how separate they want to keep the City/Country squads going forward.
