I am certainly in agreement with you, TWAS. I had made up my mind prior to the end of last season, but I am desperately trying to see the other point of view (the boards), and find that sometimes is an interesting exercise and can sometimes, if rarely, be fruitful.

There must be *something* the QRU must be seeing in him if they intend to keep him on (fucked if I know what it is though).

Haha gel, after being 'captive' to the incompetence and madness we've endured for 2+ years, is the first hint of Stockholm Syndrome now creeping in? ;).

Re the points above you and TWAS have been debating:

- look at the compelling pattern: if we take the recent results from 3 successful coaches, White at Brums, Link at Reds, Cheika at Tahs, the facts are clear, they have a consolidation process, culture change and some sound team improvement in their Year 1s, and in their Year 2s they breakthrough to a far higher level of total team performance, skills and results on the board.

To say the least, this is not RG's pattern, with him we have seen two seasons of consistent game plan confusion, skills mediocrity at best and decline at worst, and consistently poor results overall. Plus an Excuses Factory close by whose output rivals in all facets the old Kremlin's claims that they would have the world's most productive economy if it wasn't for the Russian winters slowing things down.

So if he's re-instated by the QRU for Year 3 and somehow wins the 2016 S18 or gets right up close to that, it will defy all recent coaching performance trends we have seen from the best coaches we have seen. Let's remember, a Head Coach's goal is to win the Title, not just make marginal improvements after more than 3 years of involvement.

I suspect if RG is our man in 2016, if at the end we get say 5 places up the ladder vs 2015, the QRU's formidable PR machine will be screeching from the rooftops regarding 'the massive improvement the team has made in 2016'.

- and gel it's not just RG. Much of the Reds HPU is, effectively, in disarray. We have a totally out of his depth defence coach vs a top-drawer specialist (as was so obviously needed way back when). I am told by numerous sources that the Reds video analyst is inexperienced and far from a seasoned operator in that key role. Meehan is clearly either being overruled by RG every day, or is manifestly not up to it. The Reds S&C dept is virtually non-existent now (which is close to a sacking offence surely vs someone!) after all manner of fall-outs and departures. And so on.

The RG issue is but the tip of an iceberg that has almost wholly melted away.

The issue of management capability in depth, and proper, full support resourcing of a kind proven to be required in an elite team environment if superior results are demanded, is way beyond that of just RG in the case of the Reds HPU in mid-2015.

From a distance, this NSW supporter assumes that RG has some coaching skills otherwise he would not have been signed on to the Force nor brought in to the Reds under their succession plan.
I think he may be a very good training-day coach: well organised, sets up early, identifies a season long training program, technically strong, and has a good range of skills and drills for the players. Perhaps that is what your Board sees too, and it takes priority over match day tactics and team selections.
A stronger Reds outfit is important to Australian rugby.

Another element that a successful coach has is the ability to motivate his players. This attribute should, theoretically, be less important in this professional age.

But I reckon it is still a big factor. Cheika seems to have it. Graham just comes across as an uninspiring leader to me. No charisma.

The RG-train is still heading towards the cliff, but the injury-toll has slowed it down a smidge.

I wonder what he says at half time the Reds usually come out a pile of dirt and it all can't be S and C. Is he being out coached at half times.. Id say so..

Here's one that may or may not have been mentioned - fresh start and face Peter Hewart is currently with Suntory.

"Graham is not going to be sacked. Get used to it, Reds fans. Some won’t get used to it, of course, and will walk away from the team they love. Some will size up the new support network the QRU puts around him and, swallowing their inclination to cancel their memberships, will resolve through gritted teeth to give the Reds one last chance in 2016."

He's staying according to Wayne Smith. To coin a phrase used so often used throughout this season by RG and Slipper: "disappointing"

It is unbelievable that the ARU doesn't have a say in who coaches their players as well. How the hell does it serve austrtalian rugby having this muppet involved at any level other than juniors?

I was genuinely excited for this years Reds season after what was a painful 2014 in rugby. There was lots of positives coming out of Ballymore and Brisbane City won the NRC. We signed some good players and a couple of risky ones that looked like they could make the switch to Super rugby. As we all know it hasn't eventuated and it's starting to look like things are going backwards.

If the Reds management are thinking that another year of this is a good thing for their brand, I can not comprehend it. For an organisation that seems to get most parts of running a professional team right they don't seem to understand the requirement for the team to be heading in the right direction for the fans. I think the majority of fans would like to see someone else have a chance as head coach in 2016. Even if they aren't a huge success at least it would be seen as them looking at other options.

I've met RG a couple of times now and he seems like a really nice guy. He would be a fantastic person to bring out at corporate events and make people feel like they are part of something bigger. For some reason he just doesn't seem to be able to do that with the players that he has. Cheika on the other hand wouldn't ever be described as "nice" and it is reflected in how his team is performing.

While I will always be a Reds fan I will find it harder to devote time and money to watch them if the same offering is given in 2016.

If Reds management have actually said "get used to it, Reds fans", and actually mean it and are not saying it merely to ensure they don't undermine Graham for the rest of 2015, then I think it shows they have lost touch and it's time for a change in management.

I'm not one to read too much into what's quoted in the paper, because you don't know whether the comment is made sincerely, or whether it's a matter of saying the right thing in public to support their people.

But if it's true, and actually meant, I'm very disappointed.

Just for clarification, the quote is Wayne Smith's words. I (hopefully) think the reds wouldn't use words like that. Like Georgina is the mouthpiece of the tahs, Wayne Smith seems to be the mouthpiece of the QRU so it is difficult to tell these days.

My wife and I enjoy hospitality of the Statler and Waldorf before/after a game, but I am really starting to be like them in the grandstands (and here) and I don't like that about myself - it's very hard.

Can anyone think of a Rugby coach who took their team down to a 20% win ratio and then managed to bring them back up to win anything?

Who coached the crusaders in the mid 90s? They got the wooden spoon in 96 and won in 98? Same coach?
