I am certainly in agreement with you, TWAS. I had made up my mind prior to the end of last season, but I am desperately trying to see the other point of view (the boards), and find that sometimes is an interesting exercise and can sometimes, if rarely, be fruitful.
There must be *something* the QRU must be seeing in him if they intend to keep him on (fucked if I know what it is though).
Haha gel, after being 'captive' to the incompetence and madness we've endured for 2+ years, is the first hint of Stockholm Syndrome now creeping in?
.
Re the points above you and TWAS have been debating:
- look at the compelling pattern: if we take the recent results from 3 successful coaches, White at Brums, Link at Reds, Cheika at Tahs, the facts are clear, they have a consolidation process, culture change and some sound team improvement in their Year 1s, and in their Year 2s they breakthrough to a far higher level of total team performance, skills and results on the board.
To say the least, this is not RG's pattern, with him we have seen two seasons of consistent game plan confusion, skills mediocrity at best and decline at worst, and consistently poor results overall. Plus an Excuses Factory close by whose output rivals in all facets the old Kremlin's claims that they would have the world's most productive economy if it wasn't for the Russian winters slowing things down.
So if he's re-instated by the QRU for Year 3 and somehow wins the 2016 S18 or gets right up close to that, it will defy all recent coaching performance trends we have seen from the best coaches we have seen. Let's remember,
a Head Coach's goal is to win the Title, not just make marginal improvements after more than 3 years of involvement.
I suspect if RG is our man in 2016, if at the end we get say 5 places up the ladder vs 2015, the QRU's formidable PR machine will be screeching from the rooftops regarding 'the massive improvement the team has made in 2016'.
- and gel it's not just RG. Much of the Reds HPU is, effectively, in disarray. We have a totally out of his depth defence coach vs a top-drawer specialist (as was so obviously needed way back when). I am told by numerous sources that the Reds video analyst is inexperienced and far from a seasoned operator in that key role. Meehan is clearly either being overruled by RG every day, or is manifestly not up to it. The Reds S&C dept is virtually non-existent now (which is close to a sacking offence surely vs someone!) after all manner of fall-outs and departures. And so on.
The RG issue is but the tip of an iceberg that has almost wholly melted away.
The issue of management capability in depth, and proper, full support resourcing of a kind proven to be required in an elite team environment if superior results are demanded, is way beyond that of just RG in the case of the Reds HPU in mid-2015.
