I wonder how long Fainga'a is out for because I don't thin replacing Hooper with Vaea helps in these kinds of games..

Anyways, pretty happy with that same XV to start next week...

The kick was the right decision, it was a draw, so you don't want the Chiefs winning either. Play the game in their half.

Although the Brumbies didn't win that one there were a lot of positives. Everyone expected the Chiefs to run rampant but they were constrained by tight defence and the Brumbies forwards more than matched them in some aspects. Mogg played well at fullback, Lilo did well at dix despite that howler of a fumble, and I was very impressed with Fardy who played his run-on debut like a seasoned pro. A good demonstration that a match can be a cracker without a lot of tries scored, when two teams arm-wrestle like those two did.

OMG, the end was a killer. 22-all with four minutes to go. All the Brumbies need to do is secure the ball from the kick off - yes done.

Then kick the ball down field as far as possible - best option would be a left foot kicker who can get good distance - that would be Mogg I guess (if he was still on the field?). Not done.

No instead Nic White puts up a nothing right foot 'up and under' that goes out on the full. What the....

The field is 60 metres wide - why did he put up such a pointless, nothing kick?

Still the Brumbies win the lineout - so just a matter of securing the ball in the tackle/ruck. But no, carelessness at the breakdown, the ball is lost and the Chiefs take full advantage to win it at the death.

Such a shame that 76 minutes of great play by the Brumbies was undone by such dumb play in the 77-78 minute

After that performance the Brumbies would put a lot of teams on notice that they won't be easy beats.

This team is young and that effort will give them a huge boost after coming so close to leaving with 2 points against a team that was expected to flog them.

The composure shown by Lealiifano to once again land a pressure kick was exceptional and Ben Mowen's decision to go for points instead of the 'close enough is good enough' mentality should be congratulated.

The game was riddled with handling errors by both sides but showed they were prepared to have a go. The Chiefs ability to use the width of the field was good and I thought the Brumbies did a reasonable job of containing Sonny Bill Williams. He managed a few flashes of brilliance but didn't get out of control.

Agreed RS, Brumbies look like a bloody well coached team to me, very impressive game I thought.

All the elements are there that the Brumbies lacked last year:

Heart - the 2011 team would have given up after the Chiefs' first try, but they came back and scored themselves
Commitment - the intensity was there was the full 80 minutes and the body language was positive
Technique - the scrum and lineouts are looking stronger and although there werea number of handling errors, the all round skills look better
Fitness - they were still going strong at the end, last year they were out on their feet with 10 minutes left.

Even though they lost, there is a lot to take from the Brumbies performance tonight.

Their general forward play was solid. In fact, I would venture that it is their strength. They secured their own ball well, and pressured the Chiefs at times with accurate counter rucking. They hunted as a pack, which is great to see. I noted very few penalties were awarded at ruck time. Both teams (for the most part) kept the ruck very clean. Both teams also counter rucked well.

Defence was also solid overall. I counted 3 times that the Chiefs changed tactics throughout the game, caused by the Brumbies 'in your face' defence. The Chiefs should actually be credited tactically there, as other teams would have continued on, oblivious to the fact that plan A wasn't working. The Chiefs coaching staff can should a bow there. The solid defence structure of the Brumbies is going to wear teams down though. Similar to the scrum. The scrum was iffy at first, but wore down the Chiefs as the game went on.

Mogg is solid. I rate him. I wish I had him in my fantasy rather than 'South Park' Beale. His kicking game is excellent, and his positional play is great. He was always in the right spot when the opposition kicked. He isn't afraid to test defences either. I like that.

Fitness is good, and I think that they will really take it to the clan next week. The Chiefs just edged them in what can only be described as an arm wrestle. The Chiefs forward pack has really stepped up so far this season, which I believe is why they are enjoying success.

Ref's decisions were so-so in some areas. My wife will attest to the forward pass I screamed black and blue at. Other areas were questionable also, which could be perceived as momentum turners. However, I don't want to overly criticize Ian Smiths' performance, as he was consistent, and backed his own judgement in certain areas. That's rugby.

The Brumbies have a lot to work with, and are headed in the right direction. I suppose that is my major point.

For the Chiefs I thought Messam did a truck load of work yet again & Retallick was very handy come line-out time with a few good steals. The handling errors were the biggest issue for the Chiefs IMO.

Red Baron, you have a bit more analysis on the game than my earlier post and it's exactly my assessment. I'm looking forward to heading out to Canberra Stadium next Saturday. A win will be a good birthday present.

Can we say it again with feeling: the impressive, nearly immediate impact of superior, competent coaching and the related skills in selection, team culture building and motivation. Here it is at work folks! Just like the type of improvements Link achieved with the early 2010 Reds, 6 or so months after starting with them. That's the mark of the best.

Makes me laugh when the RG fanboys say he needs two years to show improvements at the Force. And when the depressives say that we'll never get decent teams here as 'Australian rugby lacks depth'. It's the coaching and management, stupid, not the players.

Cooled off a bit now....

What was really impressive about both teams is the 'tightness' of both playing groups. Both teams repsonded well to the pressure applied by their opponents - an enthralling contest. Even though penalties prevailed for the first 60 minutes there were plenty of periods of good rugby leading up the to penalty shots.

Shaping up as a great competition - and we should see plenty more close contests

Performances like that are exactly what will bring back the fans. Exactly what the Brumbies need! A win against the clan would indeed be a good birthday present.

Bad luck Brumbies. You showed admirable patience and defence but poor handling didn't help the cause. The Chiefs had trouble holding onto the pill also but at least they made up for it with a bit of attacking flair when they did.

It was not a bad execution of a limited game plan but the limitation was itself a negative in the wash up.

I thought the Chiefs got the rub of the green from the ref but they probably didn't. Smith is the best ref in Sydney and did a pretty good job. The Brumbies were pointing the finger at him at the end when he got in the way of the defence but shit happens. We have seen refs order a scrum in such situations but defenders aren't protected from such an event in the law, only attackers; so Smith was correct not to intervene.

I said last year that Nic White would play for the Wallabies one day but he hasn't learnt his professional tradecraft yet. He dithered at the base of scrums and rucks and executed that egregious kick to demonstrate his inexperience at the professional level.

It will come for him but not quickly.

Scott Fardy, from my Rats club has always been a joy to watch at the club level when one is not sitting too close to his mother. I didn't think he could play as well in Super Rugby as he has in the last 2 weeks but I have form in that area. 2 years ago I didn't rate another Rat, Hugh Pyle, either, though in the case of "Huge" he was very young then.

Jesse Mogg has been the biggest surprise for me at the Brumbies this year and not least for his booming left foot. He has Wallaby squad written all over him. There is a bit of Dagg and Jane about him; so they have to design plays, or at least procedures, to get the ball to him. Ditto for Tomane. Can anybody work out if he is any good from that game? Why didn't they try to find out?

That game plan is pure Jake White and in truth it plays to the Brumbies strengths; but there has to be a bit of dessert to go with the meat and potatoes.

PS - A magnificent game from Leali'ifano don't you think? Worthy of the old Brumbies teams.

Yes indeed RedsHappy.

Rod Macqueen won the rugby world cup with a team that had suffered record losses to the ABs and theBoks and turned them into World Cup winners
