I can confirm that Klennan (B) has been training with the 1st and 2nd XV squad this week but is still uncertain on a return to the field due to injury worries. I look forward to his long awaited return to barker's starting lineup, his presence in the front row really lifts the pack's performance.

Smerdon several weeks. Kirkby also out this week (the starting 9 & 10 from last year's winning team). If ever Cranbrook are to beat Barker it is this week. Not that it would have changed the result but Barker 4 & 5 were suspended from the Knox game for disciplinary reasons.

Paterson was excellent. My assessment of him is that he's going to be really good at this level but may struggle higher up because (a) he will be confronted with defenders who tackle low and hard, and much of what he does at the moment depends on using his upper body strength to barge past defenders, (b) though he runs very strongly, he's short on speed, and (c) I didn't see much evidence of ball skills (though a lack of support gave him limited opportunity to show that he could pass). If he develops a passing game he could be a very handy Lloyd Walker-style centre. Or he may go into League, as I believe his brother did (where he would end up playing lock or second row).

reading Fitzsimmons book Tobruk ... and makes me see parrallels between good battle plans and good rugby "game plans"
think Cranbrook v Barker could be a very good game ... particularly if Barker comes with the right game plan
think Cranbrook has a very good pack, so any game plan will need to target several other weaker areas
be curious to see Cranbrook's full back under the "high ball", and the Cranbrook's left hand pass looked a bit suss (although amzing how many half backs these days are struggling on their weaker side)

Your assessment of Paterson is spot-on.
I was however surprised that no one cottoned onto his left foot step,
which was his main weapon of choice!
A very well balanced player on his feet.
He will definitely be a handful this season in the CAS comp.

Agree Barker had no attack outside of 10. Once he went off they had nothing except having 6 (Burkett) bash it up. Knox basically double teamed him in defence and hence Barker went nowhere.
Barker has a small (admittedly gutsy) forward pack and no speed out wide. Judging by commentary from the other matches I'd say overall the standard of CAS comp this year looks a lot lower than 2013.
Thought Knox fowards were good and stuck to the game plan, wearing down the smaller opposition. Number 2 and 6 looked like very good players. The backs were under utilised. 13 looked very dangerous but didn't get much ball. Overall a solid team who played consistently throughout; fitness looked very good. Given reports from other matches Knox are looking like strong favourites to me.

The 2014 Waratah Shield games have started yet there is no draw or competition manual etc posted on the NSW Schools RU website with the first round matches apparently to be played by 24 May.

I highly doubt cranbrook beat barker in 2008 since barker came 2nd to Knox that year. Cranbrook did, however, beat a very weak barker side in 2009 (in both fixtures if I recall correctly)
I think that this year looks very promising for cranbrook and equally alarming for barker. I will be very interested to see the outcome of the game this weekend but am, like most, expecting cranbrook to come away with it. Unfortunately, key players are out for barker. However, a BIG positive they can take from last weekend was their solid performance in 2's and 3's.
