Knox easily outweighed Marist-took 4 tightheads. A lot of individual play & mistakes- next 2 weeks- against Joeys & Newington- will give better insight as to potential.

Agree that there was a lack of clinical precision and that team work was very rusty. Knox will need to realise they are a team quickly and play as a side. I could hear the coach imploring the side to be more patient and build on the pressure that were generating at various and regular times. But, their defence was solid, the scrum impressive and their scrum quite impressive. Their 7 was a stand-out. The big 12 looked good and the replacement centre - 21? - was very dangerous.
It may be due to their rustiness, difficult playing conditions (I bought a Coke Zero and a bottle of water to counter the heat. The coke was like warm and some bugger stole my water……), or the constant changes due to the nature of a trial match, but the best half back for the Knox 1sts and ends was when the Knox 15 played half: he played with an urgency and had no Gregan theatrics at the back of rucks and mauls like the others (nor any random passing to space.)
Knox scored some good tries. It is too early to say where they will end up in the scheme of things, but there is definite promise in this side.
And congrats to Marist, they were outplayed, but they didn't resort to any cynical unpleasant negativity shown by some sides. Their try was well worked and it would be an injustice to describe it as a consolation try.
An ambulance turned up and some players ant off with some injuries - I hope none were serious and the the players aren't out for long.
The fixture is only in its second year, but the spirit was good and Rugby of a good, entertaining standard. Well done to all involved.

How did Waverley go
Although Knox took tightheads the front row battled and the two behind them had a severe head clash which had them both on the ground. Knox clearly has come a long way under their new coaching regime. Although it is a difficult oval to spectate from and to have a constant view of running play, it is clear that they have depth. The seconds played a quality match and many seem young so the future looks bright. Hopefully they will provide a list of player names against Joeys and Newington and Knox will go better this year. Unless there are injuries based on this they will give a good account of themselves. The Knox 6 and 7 played excellently throughout. The 6 scored several tries, 2 early on whilst Marist were still fresh. The line looked very threatening on attack particularly when the 21 came on as a replacement in the second half when misdirected kicking stopped, he is clearly a skilled operator. The coaching staff were disappointed at some selfish running play when scoring opportunity was lost by runners holding onto the ball too long and those outside overrunning. Several have real pace. One suspects that might be a focus at training for a while. The 15 although small, was truly excellent and his place kicking unusually good.

Waverley firsts went down to Riverview firsts. I am not aware of the score except to say it was not close. Waverley and Riverview were evenly matched until about half time when a boy from Riverview came and scored about 3 tries. Without that one boy the result would have been much closer.
Waverley seconds went down big time to Riverview 2nds in a convincing win for Riverview.
Riverview have several very large and powerful forwards in the firsts and seconds so they dominated the breakdown/ruck and there was little (if any) turnover ball to Waverley. One of their forwards in the firsts is about 190cms and solidly built.
It was the same story with the Riverview seconds. Their first number 3 was massive but was injured just a few minutes into the game. There was some reprieve for a period of time but then in the second half or second quarter they put on a boy with headgear and a different jersey to the rest of Riverview team. This boy was built and I mean built. His legs are like tree trunks, very wide shouldered and barrel chest. I dont know if it was the different jersey but he really stood out. He dominated the breakdown with his physical strength and was obviously the strongest boy on the field. Thankfully they only threw him the ball 2-3 times when he ran over the top of our boys. From what I am told it was like a freight train hitting them. By the time he was on there were non-contested scrums...phew!
Waverley 2nds appeared to be poorly drilled and the defence line was often all over the shop. We really need to keep a straight line.

that is a hard one but i do remember last year knox was the favourite before the season started and look what happen to them. so who knows but i believe that trinity will be up there.

Does anyone know the result of the 15s Knox v Marist match? Last year was apparently a cracker and the first time the 14s had been beaten since the start of year 7.

Can anyone confirm the return of Klennan (B) this season. A promising hooker/fly half who missed all of the 2012/13 seasons due to multiple injuries. Barker will definitely require his versatility and skill set this season I believe.

Knoxs 45 - 7 drubbing of Marist Canberra seems to confirm my earlier predictions as title favourites.

What surprises me is barker has won the last two seasons with one win short of undefeated seasons both times and no one seems to think thy can continue their form ... I think we should worry less about big names in teams seeing as it doesn't seem to necessarily lead to success but look at the rugby programs of the school. It's a long season and there will be many injuries so it's all well and good to have a strong 1st XV which will win you a game but a strong 2nd and even 3rd XV will help you win a season

Barker are well in it as I have said earlier predicting them to finish second but Knox have a really strong outfit this year - they will be beatable but tough to beat

You make a strong point big kiwi however IMO Knox Grammars million dollar man Matt Williams has a year coaching schoolboy footy under his belt and his tactics and knowledge of the game is going to shine through this season. Knox will be too well drilled and have to much structure to be beaten this year. Especially with the strong roster they have returning. Knox to go through un-defeated, possibly being tested away at Death Valley but ultimately coming away with the points and the Henry Plume shield.
