This should be a great game. The Inner West Local Derby. For the last couple of years Trinity have been embarrassed by their GPS neighbours. Given that they are flying high at the top of the CAS ladder and have been hammering all comers in the CAS comp it will be interesting to see how they go against a reasonable GPS side. Newington will have it all to prove after having their high hopes of back to back GPS premierships derailed by View at the first hurdle (who incidentally thrashed Trinity in a trial match in their first game of the season). Definitely match of the day in the weekend of otherwise meaningless friendlies.

The other local derby of Scots v Cranbrook, which has been a little more interesting in the last couple of years, could be ugly for Cranbrook. If Scots put out their full side including all 9 boys who are involved at the Australian Champs it could be 50 points +++ to not very many...

Yes but we said that in 2009 when Scots had Peterson, Woodhouse plus a lot of other GPS reps, and Cranbrook went on to beat them at Scots. But this year yes I do agree Scots will put a lot on Cranbrook. Just don't count them out yet.

Agreed Cow - that was a MAJOR upset in 2009 - but this is a much better Scots side than 2009, and a less able Cranbrook side. Scots were very arrogant that year, they won't make that mistake again. Scots player fatigue and possible injuries from the Australian Champs will be Cranbrooks main/only hope of making it competitive...

Well, maybe. Except that there's word that Newington is resting its three Australian Schools players - Roods, Baldwin and Ala'alatoa - as well as Roye who made Australia A. This makes sense in a way - why not rest those guys from a friendly when they've had a tough week at the national chamiponships and have demanding GPS games coming up? - but certainly makes the game less meaningful as a contest. It will be interesting to see whether Trinity plays Debreczini or gives him a break too.

Trinity had three of their players in the National Championships last week and they have been advised they may rest also (not sure if it is compulsory) as not all played significant part of particular games whilst representing NSW.

It happened last year also. Newington still put up a very capable and formidable team and won in the drizzling rain. Trinity didn't disgrace itself either - tough, slippery and greasy rugby!

This seems to be the only time to be able to have a game due to competing commitments.

Trinity is also playing a visiting Japanese High School around the 26th or something. SJRU Under 16s also trying to play that team also - may be a big ask as it is at the final games of the Sunday competition.

I also agree scots would romp home however they are resting a heap of players. Walters, Miller (both AUS A) and Stewart (AUS) are being rested along with Van der laak and Herden (NSW II Starting). Horwitz the only Aus rep playing, boileau, mcmullen and kellaway are looking for a strong game after not much time up in QLD.

Newington beat Trinity today 15-14. Trinity dominated over the newington squad. Much talk after the game of the aus players being out and the 'GPS' heads swelled as usual at the post match function. Not realizing that trinity in fact had 5 players missing including Debrezini. Well done to both teams for playing a tough and physical game. Few 'questionable' calls by the ref which don't indicate the game at all. Trinity deserving the win but unable to capatalize, even though they dominated set play.

But Trinity did lose Rockon, so you can't really argue about GPS big heads etc. They might be beating everyone in the CAS comp, but at full strength i think they would only be capable of beating Kings, Shore and Grammar in the GPS this year. Newington beat them, Riverview have already easily beaten them, and from what i've seen and know of the players, Scots and Joeys would both account for them.

Such a shame we don't get a CAS Premier vs GPS Premier just for bragging rights...

Hard to judge this one. Both sides had a third of their top side out, so there was a lower standard than usual and less cohesion in the sides than you'd expect. Refereeing was hard to follow. Trinity had two in the sin bin (Jones and H Orr) at one point and this was when Newingto scored its tries. Pat Sio scored early and Jamieson Clark earned a penalty try when he was impeded after a chargedown. Newington hit the front with a penalty with two minutes to go but before that both sides refused to shoot for goal from kickable penalties.

Best news for Trinity was a much improved line-out, with new lock, Stephens I think, securing more ball from the line-out than Trinity usually manages.

pretty good game of rugby not nearly as close as the trinity v newington game above but cranbrook stayed in the match for most of it but were truely outclassed by scots even with there 3 or 4 rested aus schools players i think the score was 45-7

The tone and standard of the game descended rapidly from the first tackle onwards with a newly promoted prop from Newington - 2nd - deciding it was okay to "eye gouge" his opponent. He may have missed detection from the referee and linesman but his opponent came back on and played "all over him" - with one eye open and showed what little talent and skill he has to offer.

The damage to the reputation of your school and team mates??? as the Mastercard ad says - "priceless".

Refereeing was more than hard to follow (I understand it was the ref's first, first XV game) - the automatic yellow card with the penalty try must be in the mail (didn't happen)....or perhaps he just became overwhelmed as demonstrated by a whistle fest of inconsistency .... for both sides.

Trinity v Newington

A few thoughts on the Trinity side. Pat Sio is plainly an impact player - when he decided to get involved he was very hard to stop and he made some strong tackles, but he seemed to go missing a bit and I'd have thought he needs a higher workrate if he's to progress further. Harrison Orr managed to get himself binned for a spell (for, I think, a dangerous tackle, though it was hard to tell). His workrate was great and he runs very hard. His problem will be working out his best position. He doesn't really have the height to play lock or No8 in senior rugby. If he works on his speed he could be a handful as a blindside flanker. Or maybe he can bulk up and make a Richard Harry-type shift into the front row. I think he's heading for Sydney University next year so no doubt they have something in mind for him. Jamieson Clark played well at 10 without quite menacing the line the way Debreczini can. Alex Logan had a strong all round game in the centres and defended strongly. Jones, at half back, played OK but gave away critical soft penalties through ill-discipline.

It will be interesting to see how the side lines up this week. With Debreczini back, they should have too much for Waverley. A win on Saturday would mean that Trinity needs to win only one of its last three games to guarantee at least a share of the premiership. On the other hand, if Waverley and Knox both win, they will both be one win behind Trinity with three to play, and it could be a very interesting finish.
