Newington in both the 1sts and 2nds were big sides. The physicality definitely showed in the 2nds. Though this may have also the reason for the lop sided penalty count - over enthusiastic big lads with more passion than discipline. That said the Newington supporters could feel themselves slightly aggrieved by reffing, though regardless of that knox were never going to win. By the end they looked slightly dispirited and flat. Early days yet for both sides and combinations should develop. Even at school boy level urgency is still required, there were a few Knox players who ambled around as if they were out for a stroll...they never seemed to run or showed enthusiasm. Newington took advantage of this by the occassional long kick.
In the 1sts the size difference would have indicated a similar result, but Knox managed to come through. Newington are a brutal side - they looked to use their power before being more expansive - their numbers 1, 3 and 13 were big and mobile. However I thought their best player was probably one of their smallest - number 7. I would have liked to see their 15 have a bit more ball as he looked the goods. Their number 5 was also mobile and dangerous with the ball. It will come, but once they manage their explosive power and size they will be a better side for it. Often the whole pack didn't all play with the same intensity which probably allowed the smaller Knox pack stay in it. Also they should learn to chance their arm a bit (slipping in way too many cliches here), they scored a great long distance try when they did.
For Knox i felt the back three were slow. Their number 10 played well and their centre combination was strong. The number 6 was visible as well. The front row were not intimidated by their larger opposition. However, and I am not sure whose fault it is, this Knox side looked unfit. And from earlier posts there seems to be some injuries already. There is a high correlation between being unfit and getting injuries. Knox will be a much better side if competitively fit. And it could also explain some of the walkers in the 2nds.
The field looked good, but a bit slippery (which may explain some of the scrappy nature and an unwillingness to use the ball). The slipperyness may have been connected with verdant thick cover. The oval appeared not to have been mown for months!
To sum it up, a willing early trial. Newington should improve, they have depth and size and power. Knox should be competitive but not great. For their fitness is a concern.
