CAS 2019

I don’t know Trinity’s precise numbers but it has a few more teams than SAC. Not many more. It’s a combination of factors. Demography is one: the communities from which Trinity draws don’t have a big Rugby tradition (though the Indians and Sri Lankans certainly boost the cricket teams). A wide variety of sports are offered. And the line we used to be given at school- “Rugby is a game for all shapes and sizes” is not really true anymore. There are too many massive units going around in school teams for that to hold true these days. Realistically Rugby is a minority sport in most schools now. Which need not be such a bad thing, if it attracts kids who love the game.

This chart may explain a correlation between teams student population and % of background other than English. If you presume the BOTE kids are preferring other sports and subtract them from the student numbers you get approx one team for every 50-60 remaining students. Ie if the remaining pool is 1000 you should have about 20 teams. BOTE numbers seem a bit out of whack at Trinity, 40 seems a more likely number, Knox numbers are a bit of a guess

Crikey Flavio where do you get this stuff
Classic Flavio. Interesting chart however don't think much of it is true. What's your source or are you just polluting the forums with absolute rubbish?

Wow Flav, was your dad Julius Sumner Miller?

Those stats are awesome, pity I can't make heads or tails, but shit, I'm not going to argue, I wouldn't know where to start!

I think all this concussion nonsense is propaganda made up by the soccer fellas. Imagine the strength of the CAS competition if all those boys played rugby. Also, I agree with Retired FootyHead, these numbers from Flavio seem a bit hard to believe. Please provide your source Flav

Feeling the love here.

All the data is from the Myschools website and published team lists, Barker numbers dont include the girls (but they do have 3 sevens teams)

It is not to discourage anyone from playing Rugby, all my kids played club and school and my daughter played sevens. It was in response to the comments about Alos and Trinity not having many teams, now we can see why.

I think it is worth analysing so as the various numbers change we can get an idea of the impact on CAS rugby numbers

Sorry that I doubted you Flavio, thanks for the data. We could all take a page out of your book.

Interesting point of view however don’t standby the racial profiling of the Indian and Sri Lankan community. Thought you were better than this and wouldn’t expect someone on the forum to say something along those lines. Recommend deleting your comment and writing an apology to anyone you may have potentially offended.

Mate for Christ’s sake don’t read offence into what was not intended. For Gods sake lighten up.

RFH,

I think you have misread Snorts thought process.

I will stand by Snort in that nothing Racial of the kind was meant, knowing a few Trinity boys, the school is very diverse, probably more so than most others, so the observation is more of a fact rather than a slur.

Let's all move on, back to Flavs stats, very impressive (sure they're not from Mad magazine!)

Best matchups player wise for this Friday night? I think both teams have a lot of skilled players on their own whilst also being dominate teams when these players work together. I've heard some big names floating around this page with the likes of Rechner etc. Everyone's thoughts?

Biggest matchup is undoubtably Lamens vs Griffiths. The solid defence and running game of Lamens vs the amazing footwork of Griffiths shapes up to be the decider for CAS selections on Saturday Night.

Actually there is a race-based comment in this discussion that I thought would cause uproar. Why aren’t all the Waverley Irish up in arms about the designation “backgrounds other than English”?

I know it's only early in the week and teams/injuries haven't been publicised yet... But... My tip is that coming off last weeks huge win for Knox, they will be more than ready to towel Cranbrook up under lights and send a message to the rest of CAS that they aren't here to lick stamps and sent postcards. With Cranbrook having such a light pre-season, I'm not too sure how they will handle the boys in Black and Blue come Friday Night.

As far as match-ups go, IMO Knox's front row as a collective is certainly something that Cranbrook will have to keep an eye out for, with all three players (1. McDonald, 2. Grobler, 3. Kablau) being not only big, but extremely physical. Quite frankly, I'm not all too sure if Cranbrook will be able to keep these three from busting holes and doing damage around the breakdown, which will allow their notorious backrow (6. Cheal 7. Breden 8. Gratwicke) to wreak havoc at the breakdown and constantly keep the boys from Bellevue Hill on their toes. Knox's forward pack will be the difference between going home empty handed, and taking it all due to how strong their set piece is, with one of the the most powerful packs in Sydney Schoolboys Rugby, their scrum is almost untouchable, and all are strong runners and ferocious in defence.

Hopefully it isn't a blow-out because I'd love to see a repeat of the Waverley match, solid footy right up until the final whistle but unfortunately I can't see it happening.

Prediction: Knox by 20+ due to the sheer power of their forward pack as a whole, and the slickness of their backs which I don't think Cranbrook will be able to match.

Thanks but no thanks. It’s purely empirical. Trinity has a large subcontinental intake. This has included many good cricketers - Jayawardene, Dassanayake and Pararajasingham all went on to play Sydney First Grade (there may be others). A few years back the Trinity school captain (who I think was Indian) was a good 1st XV second rower but I can’t recall another subcontinental 1st XV player at the school. This isn’t “racial profiling” but observed fact. It would be racist if I said that Sri Lankan’s couldn’t play Rugby. But that isn’t what I say at all, just as I don’t pretend that the Tongans at Newington couldn’t do well at badminton if that were what they chose.
