CAS 2019

I agree with you absolutely. A previous post of mine confirms this, even though i was referring to Cranbrook...it applies to Aloys as well.

"The easy preseason (thus far) for Cranbrook only increases the challenge faced in R1 against Barker @ Barker. The best Brook can hope for is an injury free start to the CAS."

When it was a home & away competition (10 rounds - albeit briefly) the preseason wasn't as long and Brook and Aloys weren't locked into playing only the weaker opposition. I thought Cranbrook was playing Aloys this weekend, but according Jim from the TAS/GPS forum it's TAS we are playing - who are Aloys playing? Good luck.

I understand that in the past Cranbrook may have been successful but this year Cranbrook's opposition is poor. Pius (bottom of ISA), Sydney Grammar (3rd Grade comp) and such are not going to test Cranbrook. Trinity on the other hand have vs Newington and Shore who are much bigger tests. And the same is similar for Knox, Barker and Waverly. So although Brook may have a strong team, like Aloys a weak set of trial games will not test those boys.

I heard that Cranbrook have 6 teams in the opens, in so that is a significant increase from recent past years where they might have had only 3. Is Brad Gill making a impact over there

Not sure, was told last weekend that Brook 5ths played against Grammar (2nds or 3rds?). It was a surprise to me too that Cranbrook is fielding 5 or 6 open teams. Don't know a lot about the inner workings at Brook - just a casual observer these days (OB and former parent - let's not go into that... long story)...

Re Brad Gill ... what is his actual role?

Is he hands on coaching ... as he was at Newington?

Or is more a Director of Rugby ?

Either way there is some real excitement amongst the Cranbrook faithful as to this years 1st XV

so I am interested to see how they go, when they get a real hit-out

It's not like 2014 where they had at least one player with Aussie Schools potential (Summerhayes ... in his 3rd season) ... and had a pretty amazing back-row in Summerhayes, Mahoney and Makas .... and a high quality 10 in Sam Renton (think he made NSW Schools?)

I cant think of anyone in Brook team that is short odds to say make NSW Schools ... maybe Alex O'Reilly ... but I don't know other strong players ... I guess the 9 ... isn't he into his 3rd year?

Oh well time will tell

I believe the 9 is going into his 3rd year (Tas....?), but not sure of the chances of him making schools. I've heard from an old friend that he did a training session or two with Sydney Uni colts, so he must give an OKAY ball but not sure if he quite has the size and mongrel to make it past CAS.

While on the topic of 9's, does anyone know how Tom Constable's ankle is looking? Fingers crossed that Xavier Sammut is better for this weekends match up because i'm certain that Shore will be looking to knock off Knox after their most recent win @ HH and Fitzgerald will need crisp ball if he wants to take control like he did @ HH

You might be right . I heard he had a knee issue. but I was optimistic

If you are right . whether Lathan hutch-Walters goes to 10? However long as he passes it

I like lathan at 12 .. but I’d be wanting to see sometimes a cut out pass to Levi

Anyway coach Cornish has a great track record with moulding 10s (fly halves)

However Gibbs is freakishly talented . I gather he is a handy cricketer.

He gets defenders guessing. and if he doesn’t burn you himself

He will set up the likes of Dan O’Brien

So if no Ron volkman my money sadly will be on joeys. Heart always with the double v.

Wlf, they never seem to play 16As later . say before 3rds . they should. altgh I see the junior school 1st Xv gets a run, which is nice for those kids

Absolutely they should play the 16as later, eg 11am or later.

The reason they play at 9am is so the Soccer 1st 8/11/12/13, or however many are in a team, can prance around for an hour from 10.15am on QP1, have 2 men and a dingo watch but pacify all the soccer players/fans (none of whom come to watch). So that means there is no rugby on no.1 from 10am - 12pm. (Bring a book or have a hair cut!)
We are also seeing rugby players dive over the soccer line markings to score tries!

The other issue for the 16s, (n.b the B's start at 8am as the sun comes up), is that at that time of morning the ground is always wet which makes ball handling much harder, so more dropped ball.

The Junior school 1sts XV are playing their annual game on QP1 which is special/terrific for all the boys/both teams, and the crowd loves it.

I believe Ronald is out for just a few weeks, but his replacement at 10 M.De Bartolo was brilliant last week v Auggies!

Let me know if you are still coming on sat. I assume so, and the weather forecast is excellent for all school games.

The reason they play at 9am is so the Soccer .....

how about when they occasionally (thankfully) put the soccer on QP1?! ... not even that sees a crowd stick around

everyone gets up and wanders down to QP6, only to meander back later. Oh well

Might check out 16As .. begrudgingly at 9 am ... think you have a good referee ... at least in my view.

Who are the players to watch out for ... from both Joeys and Waverley? Key match-ups?

Real shame this is being played at sparrows fart

SDW, Your knowledge is VERY solid, HMMM.....

Only know a few Joe boys from the Lindfield club team, they are very good, but haven't seen enough of this Joeys team to outline key match ups. What I do know is that they played a very strong Riverview 15as team twice last year, and I believe it was 1 win all.

We have 3 good players out but our depth is pretty good, so no excuses.
Many of these boys know each other from Club, ie Randwick 16as v Lindfield 16as, so it will be furious!

It's

It's dinner time now, and both look great.

Assume we will see you on Sat?

Up in the air at the moment. I am hopeful but I do have a family commitment at lunch.
Hope to duck away afterwards and arrive by kick off or just after (traffic willing)
BTW.....beetroot, the burger MUST have beetroot

Yep luv Beetroot too but this is not a takeaway bar at QP.
It's a meat lovers Burger (Steak,Sanga,Bacon,Onions galore with Egg and sauce/s (optional).
Could be called a salad dodgers burger but it's freshly cooked, bloody big and tastes grouse!

As they say in the bush, Joe boys should know, "You're in Cattle country, eat beef ya Bastard!"

Good news ... Andrew Coorey officiating the Waverley v joeys game

Also both joeys and Waverley close enough to full strength

Should be a great day of running rugby

The next 2 games will decide if aloys will be able to place high in the CAS. They versing St Pats who will be the best team they have faced that. AFter st pats they are versing shore 2nds, if they win both those games convincely, it will really show there chances in CAS.

Will it really though? Knox flogged St Pats by 70 odd points and are vs Shore 1's this weekend with an expected win. Even if they win both those games comfortably, what does this really say for the quality of the Aloys team.

Too right, I believe Trinity had a big 50+ win over St Pats also, also were the dominant side against Shore despite ending in a draw. I don't think wins over either of these sides are a sign of strength, real test this weekend against Scots for them. Unfortunately Aloys will have to wait until the cas season to get some real competition but a bit of preseason confidence could do them well.

This is the message from TAS re the Cranbrook matches: "Our teams play in Bellevue Hill tomorrow verse Cranbrook. Please come along to support our travellers if you able. Draw below. Our 1sts Team has suffered a few major injuries, so we have a young team travelling this week- they may be young, but their enthusiasm is big!"

HHMM, The fact that we both know this officiating headline, very well, says you need to reveal yourself tomorrow at QP.
I will be there very early until 9am when the 16as are due to play, then I have to leave ,as I have another boy playing at Joeys and I am taking 1 for the team, and spreading around the you know what. Clearly I got my priorities buggered up early on in the season. I will be back around noon, so grab me and say G'day!!

Must admit tomorrow is shaping as a ripper across many age groups, and you are right, the weather should assist some great running rugby!

The Waves 1s will be at full strength, minus our star prop from last year, and Joeys the same.
Whilst people call these pre comp games, trials, every school wants to win badly and make a statement, so it will be full on in front of a BIG crowd.
Can't wait to test the litmus test!
