As a matter of interest. There's quite a few hoops to jump through to receive a dispensation for an over-age player.

Dispensation is required
The following criteria must be met before a student can progress to assessment:
  • The date at which they turn 19 must be after the last round of the competition (in 2018 that is after August 11th).
  • The student must have been enrolled at the school for the February Census date for year 10 of their cohort (for 2018 they must have been at the school in year 10 in 2016)
  • The player must be below the height and weight guidelines set by RA. The current guidelines are H190.73cm W101.89kg
  • The player cannot have played 1sts and 2nds for the previous 2 years i.e. it cannot be his 3rd year in 1sts or 2nds
.

So because Nercessian started at Barker in year 11 in 2017 that officially rules him out then. Shame he's a good player who could have used another year for representation and would have made a higher level

If he started at the school last year he can’t play in the Barker first XV at all this year.

If he played firsts and or seconds before last year he can’t play this year either and he couldn’t be in the Barker 16a’s in 2016 due to age, so was in the opens somewhere? Unless he started in 2017? Either way makes him ineligible to play any CAS rugby games in 2018 according to those CAS rules.

So thinking logically and according to the rules on the CAS website:

Nercessian would of had to play opens in 2016 if he was enrolled at Barker. If he wasn’t enrolled that year he can’t play this year. Was he enrolled?

If he was enrolled he would have been opens in 2016. Did he play any 2nd XV or first XV rugby in 2016, if so he can’t play.

The likely outcome? He probably shouldn’t be playing this weekend or for any CAS games.

Who do Barker have? trinity this weekend? I think it’s worth Trinity looking into further.

He was at Green Point Christian College in 2016 and represented AICES in Opens rugby that year. So he was presumably playing 1sts rugby for GPCC.

Messy!

There it is a black and white.

Nercessian is not allowed to play CAS rugby at all because he was not enrolled at Barker on the February census date in 2016. Including Comp games. There win against Cranbrook on the weekend will now be void. Their 3 points will be stripped.

Cranbrook will be awarded the 3 points from their game on the weekend and Barker forced to forfeit any games they have won this year as well as the first game of CAS on the weekend where Nercessian has played.

Didn’t Nercessian kick the winning goal against Joeys? How many did he get against Kings? All those goals now void- and those wins now losses.

Confirmed Nercessian played on Saturday from Rods match report.

Wow... huge.

Will be a tough dressing room this afternoon for Barker.

Wonder how that will be when the coaches tell the team Josh can’t play and they are going to be stripped of their 3 points from the weekend because they cheated the age dispensation laws.

Would be hard to trust your coaches again with decisions after this.

Good luck on Saturday.

I think you should tone things down a bit - this is starting to get personal against a high school student after all. The ARU clearance to play was applied for by the parents and the school, and was subsequently granted and then ratified by all of the other CAS schools well before the competition started. Case closed as far as participation in the CAS comp is concerned. Obviously rep selection is not so clear, and he is a very, very good player so that is a shame for all CAS supporters.

Woah, thats a bit heavy don't you think mate.

I was only saying my comment as he isn't able to be picked for CAS trials, which is unfortunate for him and CAS as he is the standout 12 of the comp.

I do think he should still be allowed to play for competition games though.

He definitely played 10 for AICES v ISA2 in 2016.

I'm curious as to know how many 1st or 2nd XV games he played for Barker in 2017.

It looks like this decision is a precedent because it's not in line with the CAS dispensation criteria.

I think the discussion thread on Josh needs to be toned down. We are all speculating rather than speaking from a position of up to the minute knowledge.

The headmasters of all the CAS schools set the rules. They all know them. I don't believe any CAS headmaster would put the reputation of their school or any students at risk by deliberately flaunting the rules.

I am fairly certain this topic has been discussed at the highest level.

Josh would not be playing unless the all headmasters agreed.

Last year Danial Buffa did not play for Barker, despite being in his final year and playing 1st XV in 2016.

So I am sure at least Mr Phillip Heath (the Barker Head) knows the eligibility criteria intimately. More so than any of our bloggers on GnG.

So lets move on and focus on this weeks games.

Hopefully this rain is finished and all the ovals can dry out for the weekend.

Are there any positional or team line up changes worth noting??

One can only go off the Dispensation Criteria Rules posted on the CAS website.
They're there for all to see.

GnG is not responsible for the CAS site and therefore we as bloggers cannot clarify if it is up to date or not.

If we cannot confirm that site is correct and has been updated with events of 2018 then we should hold our thoughts and not focus on the student in question.

This is a issue that is decided by the headmasters and not us.

Anyway we should all move on.

The points made have been valid, based on criteria officially available.
That said, such a sequence of posts from one poster starts to look like some sort of personal gripe, and is over the top, frankly.
So how about, as sensibly suggested above, people leave it to the powers that be. It's not the fault of the player.
Cheers.
