This game is being advertised for 2.00 p.m. on Sunday 27th March out at Ballymore. Is anyone aware of any squads?

There will be a couple out with their respective Super sides. For UQ, Hanson won't be there and the halfback Prior is probably only an injury away from a bench halfback spot. Morahan is also in the Reds squad, and Jonno Lance may be at Sevens. They should still get a decent team on the paddock.

Hopefully Sydney Uni turns up with a decent squad. A few years ago when Brothers took them out, they looked to have left a few top squad guys out.

Be interesting to see if Dave McDuling turns out for Sydney Uni.

QU sent a poor team to Canberra to play Vikings and it showed when they got done by 50 odd points. Hopefully these two teams play their strongest available sides would be much more interesting.

I think you can assume that Sydney Uni will bring the best squad they have available. And my recollection of the game when they were beaten by Brothers was that they selected the best players thay had available.

There are obvious difficulties when a club has so many players involved with the franchises. For example, when Sydney Uni travelled to Canberra to play Tuggeranong at the weekend they had only one player who was a regular first grader in 2010, and three of the pack were Colts age. Nevertheless, as at Canberra where they won 38-15, they can be expected to give a good account of themselves with no excuses offered if they get beaten.

With regard to Dave McDuling, there is zero chance that the Reds would release him to play for Sydney Uni. If he plays it would be for UQ. Hopefully it won't be long before he gets a bench spot for the Reds.

I might have to drag the kids out to watch this one. Both teams will be below strength but that will always be the case in these games. UQ may actually suffer more as they don't have the depth of Sydney Uni.

Sydney Uni are playing in an inter varsity comp this weekend at Hawksbury College which presumably will help select the team for the game against QU. As they are also playing trials against Eastwood this weekend they are spreading the talent pretty thinly. I assume that to qualify players must actually be students at Sydney Uni.

I haven't heard anything about the inter varsity comp at Hawkesbury, Informer, and it certainly wouldn't be used to "help select the team for the game against QU". THe team to play in Brisbane will be based on the First Grade team which trials against Eastwood. To my knowledge Uni have never previously competed in such a competition. Are you sure it's not the Sydney Uni Rugby League Club which plays in a tertiary institutions competition?

Bruce, this was on the Sydney Uni webstite at http://www.sydneyunirugby.com.au/_blog/Club_News/post/fi-ta_Laffan_Cup/

Only going on what I read " The 2011 Laffan Cup will feature 12 Teams and also double as a trial for the Australian Universities XV to play New Zealand Universities and Combined Australian Services later in the year."

Apologies, Informer, I should visit the Club's website more often. The Club is certainly going to be busy covering both this and the trials against Eastwood. I would have expected that Uni would want to give its Firsts a solid hit out against Eastwood as a preparation for the game in Brisbane the next week but this may complicate things.

Certainly if the Laffan Cup is to "double as a trial for the Australian Universities XV" the players would have to be either current students at the University as you suggest together with those who finished their courses in 2010.

Hey Austin,
UNI NORTHS / CANBERRA beat Queensland Uni in the final of the Laffan Cup. Poured with rain all day.

Uni Norths won the Laffan Cup?
That is a good form line for the John I Dent Cup considering they are probably the weakest team in the competition.

I'm not sure a win in the Laffan Cup would be a reliable form indicator for the John I Dent Cup, tf. I understand that players in the Laffan had to comply with the eligibility criteria for Australian Universities selection, i.e., be a currently enrolled student at that university or a graduate of not more than one year's standing from that university.

Notwithstanding that, congratulations to Uni Norths on a promising start to their season. I presume that the university involved is Canberra rather than ANU.

It's associated with both, but far stronger links with ANU.

UC seems to have a League flavour - I don't enjoy it as a student there!

Qld Uni team for this Sunday has been named. From fullback it is: S. Morahan, S. O'Leary, C. Borrell, R. Gilliman, T. Cox, I. Prior, W. Thompson, H. Elliott, T. Buchanan, V. Fainga'a, D. McDuling, J. Chapman, D. Howard, S. Kelly, S. Cochrane.

Reserves: H. Appleby, B Wedlock, A. Preocanin, M. Arvier, W. Brown, DRothnie, C. Foley, T. McQueen.

Lot of names are unfamiliar to me but Morahan, Prior, McDuling and Buchanan all played Qld A this year. Also interesting to see a fourth Fainga'a playing. He has been playing league the last couple of years.

Mitch Wade (Tony Shaw medallist 2010) and David Burns the leading try scorer in the Brisbane comp in 2010 have been ruled out for UQ. Both crucial, non contracted members of the club. Wade to be replaced by Vili Fainga'a (story about it in the courier mail) and Burns by former Stingrays gas man Tom Cox.

Vili will be a massive pick up. Having played with him for years, I know that he has got the physique and ability to do well.

Glad to see him back playing Rugby. Hoping to see some good news come out of it.

Hmmm Red I assume the form number 7 in trials David Hickey is injured. He is a class above Goodman, mobile and hard as nails had a brilliant 2010 in Colts and fit is destined for U/20 jumper after some Anti Joeys sentiment and NTS favourites cost him a schoolboys jersey in 2009.
