I think you're right Cyclo. And even if not, it should be offside if a player joins in front of the ball carrier. It did happen on each of the last two Brumbies' tries. I agree that it is being done by most teams with strong rolling mauls, but it really should be policed (at international level as well as Super). The maul can be a bit of a blight on the game imo and it is almost impossible to officiate properly, as well as being extremely difficult to defend.

I guess that's my problem. It's bloody hard to defend legally, but inherently takes the contest for the ball out of the phase, which seems to be out of character with the charter of Rugby! If they (refs) let teams add even more blocks to the defenders ( which are perhaps illegal) it becomes pretty tough. But if they're all doing it, and you're good at it, why wouldn't you?

I agree with all this 'technically illegal' maul stuff. The defense was already backpedaling off the lineout however. Piss poor.

There was a game we played last year or the year before against the Bulls. We didn't even contest the lineouts, just waited for those fat buggers to set up a maul. Stopped every single one of them (about 7 or 8) dead in their tracks. If only we prepared similarly this week.
