From the Crimes...

The Force's front row of former Brumby Salesi Ma'afu, Nathan Charles and Pek Cowan was dominated by Jerry Yanuyanutawa, Anthony Hegarty and Jono Owen.

It might just be a trial, but that's not a good early sign for the Force scrum...

Brumbies match report:

/5/2012
Force wilt in Darwin heat

By Brumbies Media Unit

In their first hit-out of the year, the University of Canberra Brumbies have put in a solid performance running out 25-0 winners over the Western Force in Darwin.

The University of Canberra Brumbies led from start to finish, laying on tries to Ben Hand and Christian Lealiifano, as well as five penalties split between Nic White and Zack Holmes.

In all 30 players made an appearance during the trial fixture, which was played in front of 3500 Territorians and interstate rugby pilgrims.

Man of the Match Matt To'omua had an excelllent night and has come into his own as an accomplished footballer.

On a typically warm, damp and sweaty Darwin night, the University of Canberra Brumbies looked like a team that had played together for years, with combinations in the backline starting to flourish from the outset.

Tevita Kuridrani, Joe Tomane and Ian Prior were prominent in the first half, while John I Dent star Tom Murday did his own chances of squad promotion no harm with a quality 40-minute performance.

Leon Power and Ben Mowen also impressed while Academy graduates Jesse Mogg, Anthony Hegarty, Jono Owen, Cam Crawford and Sam Carter all looked comfortable in the University of Canberra Brumbies jersey.

In all, it was an encouraging display for University of Canberra Brumbies fans. Cohesion was clearly evident and above all the team was remarkably fit, running the Force around the park and out of puff.

Skipper for the match and veteran lock Ben Hand opened the scoring with a nice try just right of the posts.

Hand played a big part in driving the team forward during the opening exchanges forcing the West Australians to rethink their game plan of slowing down the ball.

The University of Canberra Brumbies moved further ahead, with penalties to Zack Holmes giving the ACT based side room to breathe moving into the half time break.

A blistering break by Tom Cox in the first half also gave fans plenty to talk about with the lightening winger exploding onto the ball and going close to making it all the way to the try line.

Lealiifano’s try was a close range effort off the back of mounting pressure. After seven phases the clever playmaker found a small gap and dove over to grab a five-pointer.

“I was pleased with the way things went tonight, but we mustn’t get ahead of ourselves, this is just a trial and there is still plenty of room for improvement,” Head Coach Jake White said.

“The score isn’t a true indication of how things went tonight. The Force weren’t taking their shots at goal and we were, but I’m still very pleased with the effort."

In more good news for the University of Canberra Brumbies the team almost came through the match unscathed with Jerry Yanuyanutawa the only casualty after suffering a head knock.

The Force looked scratchy from the outset but will regroup with the addition of David Pocock and Nathan Sharpe for their round one clash at Canberra Stadium.

The University of Canberra Brumbies will now travel to Brisbane to face the Reds before returning to Canberrra to play the ACT XV on February 16.

University of Canberra Brumbies 25 (Ben Hand, Christian Lealiifano tries; Zack Holmes 3, Nic White 2, pens) bt Force 0. Rugby Park, Darwin. Crowd: 3500.

Game would of suited brumbies. Sounds like it was very wet. Humidity was about 70%. Not a good look for the force though. Missing the 2 most important leaders is the team. No nalaga. I Spose you can't read I to it much. Good win to the horses though

Yeah, fair enough to be happy that your time won, but what's with the dickhead attitude? "Force had ZIP" in multiple threads - we don't need that kind of parochial rubbish until at least the season starts!

Crusaders were beaten Feb 2004 by the Tahs 43-19, guess which team made the final at the end of the season? If you guessed Tahs then you would be wrong. The fact that the Saders lost the final isnt relevant. The point is the beginning of the season & trials dont mean a great deal other than blowing out the cobwebs. Be happy for the win but I personally wouldnt get too excited about trials & early round games. As a Saders supporter I know too well what the Force is capable of so I wouldnt write them off based on this trial. Good win by the ponies but too early to tell too much from this one game.

I'm not too fussed about the result, it was a very poor Force team that was put forward but from reports we were fit, almost injury free and defended well and that's what you want to hear going into round 1.

No, no I think Mudskipper is right here guys. This game was one of the most important of the season for not only both sides but the comp at large. I know the Crusaders all gathered at Todd Blackadder's place yesterday to watch a video of the game, and my source says some of the players were in tears as they realised they had no hope of glory in 2012.

Quite simply this shows that it is the year of the Brumby. They did not concede one point in this trial, and as we all know trial form is always reliable. Therefore it would not be too much of a stretch to predict that the Brumbies will not concede a point in season 2012. This will be a feat that shakes the rugby world to its core, and I for one cannot wait.

Already the bookies have closed the Super Rugby markets. The Reds membership tally has actually dropped by 12,000 people- they have been handing their tickets back as they know it is a hopeless exercise. The Saffers are seriously considering resting their top 40 players for the entire season.

As for the Force, they should just give up now and give their alotted times at NIB Stadium to a local theatre troup or circus so at least the fans can get some entertainment. Richard Graham knows this, and texted me to say that he does not expect the Force to score a single point in 2012. Not one. He was actaully really proud of his team for only conceding 25 points to a team he described as 'hands down the best fifteen I have ever seen take the field'.

In fact I have it on good authority that he rested Pocock, Sharpe, Nalaga, McCalman, Brown etc. because he was saving them for a game he hoped he could at least score a few points in. But now it seems even that is a fanciful thought.

So hard luck Force fans and congratulations Brumbies fans. What a memorable season.
