Gatland quote on FoxSports:

"They didn't play any rugby, they just kicked a lot of the ball and competed really hard at the breakdown and tried to frustrate us and were successful.''

I know what he's getting at but couldn't resist saying that it doesn't say a lot for them when the Ponies scored the only try. And for someone who, "playing rugby" is important, he coaches a side that sure as hell takes a lot of penalty kicks/drop goals when they have plenty of forward momentum and could push for a try! ;)

But enough of that crap! Great performance and great and well deserved win Brumbies! Loved every minute of it. At times the kicking duels were tiresome, at other times they were fascinating. The set piece battle was very entertaining, from Best falling to pieces and trying to pull himself back together, to Noodles getting into everything, to the scrum dominance swaying from side to side it was dramatic and enthralling.

The only possible downside is that of the three blueprints tossed up by the Reds, Tahs and Ponies, only the Ponies one got the result which gives Deans the backing he needs to play a similar gameplan. This is fine if the Wallabies can execute with the relentlessness and accuracy that the Brumbies did but I have my doubts that they can. Anyway, can't wait to see what happens this weekend! What a fantastic Tour so far - it's had it all!

He didn't want to let the 'they kicked it away' line go in the post match.

But a look at Ruckingoodstats.com shows the kicks were almost even with 45 from the Lions and 44 from the Brumbies so not sure what he's on about.

Nice post

Only if cooper and Harris kicked there fucken simple goals. :)

I just can't seem Deans taking on this type of games plan. He to will be taking goal kicks at every chance. His job depends on it and a win will be a win not matter how the team plays to do it. I think we're in for a big kicking games from both teams. And as Gatland said about the brumbies, I don't think both teams will play much rugby especially the lions. High mid feild bombs and pressure on the wallabies scrum and push for penalties.

I expect the Wobs to use the same tactics at times and I hope for the same comments from him

One of the great wins from an Aussie provincial team.

Really proud of the Ponies. Their fans are entitled to claim full bragging rights and rightfully so.

And I'll get in early and congratulate Jake White on his appointment as Wallaby coach.

One of the best team performances I have had the pleasure to witness live.

Was fun to relive the Brumbies glory days for a night.

Enjoy the next twelve years, Canberra.

Great win by the Brumbies.

To'omua and Kimlin were both absolutely excellent. The whole Brumbies side played well and did their part.

Billy Twelvetrees just got smashed every time he touched the ball. He should be renamed Billy Reducedtowoodchips.

I'll see myself out.

Oh, no, it doesn't. Jake White made the point after the game, that they have been working on their game plan for two years. The way they play is highly specialised and clearly takes a lot of practice.

I doubt that White would take that plan into Saturday's Test, if for some reason the good fairy magically made him the Australian coach. He would do what any good coach would do, he would devise a plan based partly on what he believes that the Lions' strengths weaknesses and likely approach will be, and partly on the strengths and weaknesses of his own 23.

You get into a kicking duel against Jesse Mogg, Matt To'omua and Nic White (not playing) and you lose.. Add Leo and not many people can out kick them.. I've only seen Dan Carter do it, but that's Dan Carter...

Kimlin was huge. Real captains knock. He may have played his way into the Wallaby 23. I think he's in the best form of his life.

The other forwards I particularly liked were Fainga'a and Sio.

To'omua great defensively. I sense, though, I might be alone with what I am about to add. Just note that he made a few errors though, which people tend to overlook. To'omua tends to kick quite a few balls out on the full from general play, and got away with a what looked like a knock on with no pressure. Definitely a talent, and I think he suits Deans' gameplan more than JOC (James O'Connor). I also think he is the most all round of our tens. But, and the big but is, don't hold the poor kid up as a messiah yet, as he's not quite there. I tend to think he's a little overhyped currently. I would be loathe to throw the poor kid to the Lions, so to speak.

Kuridrani can be a real handful as well. Awkward guy to tackle.

Brumbies played the same way as they do in the S15 - kick well and deep, strangle teams when they don't have the ball, look for the game to open up for a counter attack possibility. This type of co-ordinated, controlled rugby just strangled a Lions side with no obvious cohesion. The key thing to me was that the Brumbies didn't let them develop any cohesion whatsoever as the game went on. The Lions backs were just shut out of the game, outside of their wings I can't say anything positive that the Lions starting backs did.

Would that have worked against the Lions sides that played the Reds and Waratahs? I don't know, and I don't particularly care, either.

Great win from the Brumbies. All that matters is the scoreline, and it's a great win for the history books.

You can add Kimlin to that list of kickers

Part of it would seem to be due to how much the Brumbies kick and how they push the boundaries with trying to find touch etc. Mogg kicks out on the full a fair bit too.

Against a better lineout those mistakes may have been more costly.

I definitely thought the ball To'omua dropped over his shoulder was a knock on. Those are the ones you're going to get away with though because the referee and ARs are nowhere near to see the angle the ball travels.

Wow. Had tears in my eyes at the end of the game, just amazing. The Lions fans around us at the game were great, good guys who were happy to concede the better team won. Seeing the young Brumbies players do the lap after the game was awesome, the players were so thrilled. Try telling them it was only a 'second string' lions outfit.
Jake White has got to be happy with the depth of players at the Brums.
Oosthouzen (sp?) kicking the ball out at the end, probably the only kick he has ever done for the Brums, what a moment!
So many people around us taking pics of the scoreboard after the game!

According to the UK Telegraph.........

The stats make for difficult reading. Shockingly, inside centre Billy Twelvetrees made nine runs and earned only two metres. The man outside him, another Englishman, Brad Barritt registered a solitary metre in his two carries.

Very disappointing those comments from Gatland, he's better than that. Kicking a lot isn't against the rules mate, a win is a win and clearly that's all the Brumbies wanted. I don't think any Brums fans will be complaining about the tactics, because the were successful.

We talked to Laurie Fisher this morning on the podcast - told us where he thought the Wallabies should target the Lions.

Well, I have been reading post after post about how Link worked out how to beat them(but didn't),and how if Robbie wasn't such a miserable prick he would make adjustments to his tactics and squad.
Now we have actually seen them beaten, why aren't there as many posts demanding he heed these tactics/selections?

The obvious comment is that it relies upon your players having a better and bigger huge boot than your opponents, and your opponent to be inadequate at running the ball back. White, To'omua, Mogg all have it. Genia, JOC (James O'Connor), Barnes/Beale do not kick as far as the Brumby trio.

The other side is that you must be able to kick further than the opposition. Against Hogg, a stuttering lineout (and a disorganised backline), it was successful. But against the more organised A-team? I'd bank on Sexton, Halfpenny and so on to outkick Genia, JOC (James O'Connor) and Barnes/Beale most days of the week.

If you ran with the Brumby trio of White, To'omua and Mogg for the Wallabies things get more interesting, but I wouldn't bank on the same disogranisation in the lineout and backline we saw from the Lions last night.

A gameplan is ideal if the following two conditions apply:
1) you team can successfully play to it, and
2) either: a) it runs counter to the other team's gameplan, or b) you execute it better than the other team

As I said earlier, there's not many teams that can out kick the Brumbies and don't think the Wallabies team could either, as you say game plan to suit the team and who you are playing. This also takes into count what you think will win you the game.. Im sure Link would have played like the brumbies if he had that team of boots
