Reds and Rebels have got started, and the 2016 thread has started talking about signings, time for a Brumbies 2017 thread.

Problems to solve:
  • No specialist 7 while Pocock is on sabatical
  • Need a third hooker and scrumhalf
  • Jooste is currently the only backup kicker
  • 12 depth could be much better
  • May need a better fullback than Toua

Who might come out of this year's U20s? Sione and Lomax at prop, Jackson-Hope in the centres? Is Jamie Kotz still a bit too young or green? Others?

I'm happy Butler will fill in nicely at 7 for Poey. A strong running 8 would be great.

But I'd most like a strong inside centre and a fullback. Godwin from the Force would be the best - I think a player like that who showed promise but hasn't quite got there in the last few years would excel in the Brumbies set-up.

I can accept Butler at 7; he's good there because he's a good player, not because he's a good 7. The Bulls game this week was very much a "remember that I am an 8" performance. I'd really prefer we get a mercenary to come and be a specialist 7 for us over one year (the dream is another George Smith season). John Barclay might be off contract, he could be good.

Dargaville is looking a lot like McCabe in his early days, so if Larkham decides to use him at 12 or 15, it could pay off. I think Godwin is off contract as well, and it can't hurt to say "want to come and be taught by the best back in Australian history?" in the contract negotiations.

Lomax was still behind Makin in last year's NRC, and with Sio, Ala'alatoa, and Anae, I doubt Sione will get a look in.
With To'omua leaving, Jackson-Hope is a chance.

Brumbies seem to like having three THPs in the squad - Alexander, Smith and Makin this year. They might still all be available next year, but if say Benny A isn't around, then I'd think Lomax would be a good chance to come in, behind Smith and Makin, no argument.

Have to say I've not been impressed with Albert Anae in the games I've seen him play, and he seems to play hooker as much or more than LHP.

I think we also need a proper 7 while Poey is away. Maybe either of Killingworth or Perry if they're available? Keep Butler at 8 or as reserve.

Agree with everything you say, Runner. Given the NRC backrow was Smiler-Butler-Vaea, it's not as if Perry would be new to the team. Killingworth would be good, as would Baldwin, but it will be hard to negotiate with them knowing that Pocock will be back the following season.

I don't think so. Any of them would be absolutely frothing at the mouth to get an opportunity where they could be the 1st choice 7 at a Super franchise for an entire season.

DHP from the Force?

:). But I meant for the 2017 season. I really thought Jooste might make the bench before J-H although he is somewhat younger.

I think its more about the positions. JJH being a 12 in Burnie's eyes, Jooste being more of a 10.

Also, the injury Jooste has just come off (osteo pubis) may also be a factor considering the U20's opportunity coming soon. Not worth risking him yet.
