Final score I think Mr D. You'll be thrilled to know that Sam captained the side in the first half. Didn't come back on after half time.

First half was quite good standard of play from both sides. Minimal errors; three scrums only I can recall. Second half deteriorated somewhat due to heat and player exhaustion I think. High 30s temperature.

Injury to Lausi Taliauli didn't look good. Ankle I think.

Hawera was very solid at No 10. Has a good running, passing and kicking game. Put players through gaps and ran himself. Very good start to his career with the Brumbies. Attack was noticeably poorer after he was replaced.

Brumbies' first half scrum was dominant - not so good after Mann-Rea went off, but came strong again when Saia Fainga'a came on towards the end. Expect the set piece to be very strong for the Brumbies again this year.

The backline looked particularly sharp for so early in the season. Godwin and Smith dominated in centre field, and Muirhead was very good in both attack and defense. Finished up playing the whole game which was something of an achievement in itself.

Henry Speight showed a few glimpses of his capabilities in the last quarter when he came on in the No 13 position. A couple of trademark runs.

All in all, a pretty good outing for the first of the year. I hope they will continue to play enterprising rugby during the season and not just bring that game out against the Barbarians.

Thanks Brumby Runner, plenty of positives there.
Sam and I exchanged text messages yesterday afternoon, and it looks as though the match went as he had hoped it would.
Hopefully, Taliauli is ok, and there were no other serious injuries to players on either side. Cheers.

Some of the new or auditioning players who put in good efforts included:

Nick Mayhew - LHP, strong at set piece and active around the ground;
Tom Cusack - played both 6 and 8, in everything and strong with ball in hand, good lineout jumper;
Chris Alcock - No 7, on the ball all night and completed a couple of turnovers;
Lolo Fakosolea - No 8, played first half, looked very strong and involved;
Ben Hyne - No 8, played second half, impressive running game;
Wharenui Hawera - No 10, best on ground for mine, runs to the line and gets the backline moving, good passing game and strong kicking game though used sparingly, put supports through gaps and ran himself, goal kicker;
Kyle Godwin - No 12 in first half, impressive first game, showed good footwork to break the line and put wingers away for good runs, some poor passing early in the game;
Andrew Muirhead - wing, scored a try and made numerous good runs, defense tight. One of only two (other being Tom Staniforth) to play the whole game.

Otherwise, Andrew Smith also put in an impressive turn at No 13 with strong, straight running. Better than I've seen from him for some years. Henry Speight also put in a good turn at No 13 late in the game.

Hawera sounds interesting - have the Brumbies signed him yet, wasn't he trialling for them? Good to see that they may have found a good 10, seemed like a worrying gap for them with CLL's illness.

Make of it what you want but interestingly pre-Christmas their was reporting from the Brumbies that he was unavailable due to commitments.

Now the commitments have been announced it means that IF Toulon miss the finals (last game is 7 May) then he will be available to play in 6 Super Rugby rounds (not including finals) if he immediately backs-up (by immediate I mean from a Sunday game in France to a Friday game in Canberra) all before he is due in Japan (and that's if he skips their pre-season which would have to start no less than a month before so 2nd week of July minimum).

If Toulon make the GF he wont be released until June 5. Super Rugby does not restart (from June test break) until 7 July so he would be available for 2 rounds.

Japan's Top league is now starting earlier with a kick off date of 18 August.

IMHO, my only question is when in Larkham leaving so we can stop the distracting stupidity?

I have to say its embarrassing when an "international" coach and a sport journalist don't realise that Japan's Top League made changes to suit Super Rugby! :rolleyes:

I am not yet ready to forget the destabilising effect MG apparently had on the Brumbies the last time he was here. Even if that was overplayed, his form was very much below par. I am one who would rather not see him return for any amount of time. Time to put the faith in those younger, albeit inexperienced players already on the roster. Note the effect a changing of the guard has seemed to have had on the Aussie cricket team.

Carter probably has 1 or 2 years to get back into the top 3 locks in Aus, otherwise it's time for greener pastures.

Good luck to him, we could sure AF use the depth.

Personally, I completely agree with the Brumbies not signing Barba, because you don't shit on a professional organisation working in the same area as you like that.

That being said, if the NRL tear up his contract, and he's looking for a job post-Top 14, sign him up.

2016 Ben Barba is mature and talented. He did some coke when he won the competition. Big deal, I would say a very high percentage of athletes and young people do the same. There is no sign of lack of function, effort, or performance day-to-day.

Believe it or not, many people do recreational drugs and most of them are okay.

Brumbies were smart to side step Benny "the Blow" Basrba.

Bloke is a dipstick and a shit role model for anybody. Always the usual excuses.

Congratulations to Sam Carter. Stand out choice I reckon. Think the captaincy responsibility will actually improve his game.

PS: Congrats to you as well Mr D. Enjoy the journey !
