Watching some of the 7s. Henry V looks a good signing, but what about this Clinton Cills (is that his name?). Obvious pace, but is there any 15s ability there? I believe the Brums have him signed. Has he played 1st grade?

The youngest of the Fainga'a brothers is coming through and is meant to be quite a good openside flanker - better built than his older brothers.

Hmmm I wonder if Mooney actually decided to take the hit on Siai and Ant in order to get the one he really wanted - Colby.

Well the Reds need an openside badly.

Sonny Bill Williams and Craig Gower are set to face-off against more Australian opposition when the Brumbies embark on a tour of France next month.

The ACT-based Super 14 franchise has announced a development tour of the country, which will include matches against Williams' Toulon and Gower's Bayonne.

The two former NRL stars made their international rugby union debuts against the Wallabies in Australia earlier this month, Williams turning out for the Barbarians and Gower for Italy.

The Brumbies will close their tour against Toulon, who also boast Australians Matt Henjak and Luke Rooney and England World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson, on August 6.

They will take on Bayonne on July 28.

The other two matches are against Bourgoin-Jallieu in Lyon on July 24 and French champions Perpignan on July 31.

"Obviously Perpignan will be very strong after winning the Top 14 against Clermont earlier this month and having only dropped one match at home this season," Brumbies coach Andy Friend said.

"It provides a very exciting challenge for us.

"Toulon and Bayonne narrowly missed out on the Top 14 finals series and will also be tough."

The Brumbies will name a development squad for the tour next week but a Williams-Stirling Mortlock re-match will not occur with the Wallabies captain on international duty.

An interesting tour. Expensive I would've thought. But good opportunities for some of the young folk. I wouldn't imagine, at this time of year, the likes of SBW and Gower (and some other top line players) would be playing would they? The French season has just finished, I wouldn't have thought that it would be worthwhile having pre-season trials this early?

Yeah it will be a good experience for the lads. I think these games will be trial games for the French club's wannabees. The French clubs play 38 games in their top14 comp and then they have European games in addition to them; so they won't be risking too many of their stars unless they are coming back from a long injury and need a gallop.

No, Sills has been playing fullback for the Sydney Uni Colts Ones whenever he hasn't been involved elsewhere. Geez, there's some good lads in that team.

He was in the NSW Schools II team last year. In the Canberra Schools tournament he had some good runs but I also remember his knocking the pill on with the line wide open. I didn't rate him with other good wingers in the tournament: Price, Shipperly and Jeloudev. He didn't make either of the Oz Schools teams, but that is neither here or there - lots of good senior players didn't make their mark at the schools level.

Just ask NFJ and Phil Kearns.

The CA Brumbies have named four Wallabies in their 28-man squad for their four-match development tour of France.

Seventeen contracted members of the 2010 CA Brumbies squad have been selected including new recruit Josh Valentine. Valentine is one of four members of the squad with Test experience, along with Stephen Hoiles, Peter Kimlin and Guy Shepherdson.

Former Brumbies Academy recruits, Jerry Yanuyanutawa and Pat McCabe, will make their first appearances as full-contracted CA Brumbies. The pair will join CA Brumbies teammates Francis Fainifo, Ben Hand, Christian Lealiifano, Salesi Ma’afu, Alfi Mafi, Patrick Phibbs, Tyrone Smith, Afusipa Taumoepeau, Sitaleki Timani, Matt To'omua and Henry Vanderglas in the squad.

Eight members of the Brumbies Academy will also tour, including Tevita Metuisela and Steven Noriega (both Uni-Norths), Anthony Hegarty and Robbie Coleman (both Queanbeyan), Colby Fainga'a (Tuggeranong) and Sokai Tai (Royals). Gordon captain Ed Gower and Sydney University hooker Nathan Charles have also been selected.

Former Sydney Rooster and current Australian Sevens representative Shaun Foley (Randwick) has been selected in the squad alongside fellow Sydney club rugby backs Andrew Smith (Norths) and John Grant (Eastwood).

The trio will be looking to impress the CA Brumbies coaching staff with two places still available in their 2010 Investec Super 14 squad.

CA Brumbies Head Coach Andy Friend, who will share the coaching responsibilities on tour with Tony Rea, Owen Finegan and Darren Coleman, says the tour is a chance for the players to play some additional high quality rugby ahead of the 2010 Investec Super 14 pre-season.

“This is definitely an opportunity for a lot of these players to stake their claim for a place within our Super 14 squad – not necessarily for just 2010 but further down the track as well,” he said.

“For guys already contracted, it’s a chance for them to get some early form on the board in regards to next season. It’s no secret that there will be significant competition for positions next year and any chance these guys can get to test themselves against quality opposition will ultimately stand them in good stead when selection time rolls around next year.

“We’ve got a number of quality young players who will be joining us from the Academy. They’ve all been playing well at club level and this is an opportunity for them to show that they can take that next step.

“For guys like John, Shaun and Andrew, this tour presents a real opportunity for them to play their way into a Super 14 contract. Their selection was a result of the great form they’ve shown in Sydney this season and we’ll be looking at them to show they’re capable of playing at the provincial level.”

CA Brumbies hooker Huia Edmonds was not available due to an ankle injury while Mitch Chapman and Mark Chisholm will also remain in Australia to recover from their respective shoulder and wrist surgeries.

The team will assemble for their first training session in Canberra on Monday before departing on Tuesday afternoon.

The tour has been completely financed by a French organisation arranging the tour and the participating French clubs.

(Please note: With all players available for club rugby this weekend, the squad is subject to change pending injuries)

The CA Brumbies have gone down in the second match of their four-match French Tour with a 37-21 loss to Aviron Bayonnais at Stade Jean Dauger this morning (AEST).

While the visitors managed three excellent team tries, they were beaten by a hungrier and more physical Bayonne outfit in front of a 10,000-strong crowd.

The home side, who was without Italian flyhalf Craig Gower but did feature Wallabies Rodney Blake and Manny Edmonds, crossed for a total of six tries, including two in the opening stanza to set up a 15-7 half time lead. The CA Brumbies’ first half try came through Robbie Coleman, who benefited from some excellent controlled play with his teammates working the ball up field for seven phases, allowing the inside centre to cross adjacent to the posts and set up a straightforward conversion for flyhalf Christian Lealiifano.

Hampered by a slippery ball in humid conditions, the CA Brumbies would have to wait until the 70th minute to register their next points when winger Pat McCabe sliced through from a lineout 15 metres into the Bayonne half. McCabe made it to within five metres of the try line before popping up a neat pass to flanker Colby Fainga'a to score.

Winger Alfi Mafi completed the try scoring soon after when he when he charged over on the back of a 30-metre run. The CA Brumbies speedster capitalised on a well-worked centre-field scrum move by scrumhalf Patrick Phibbs to touch down next to the posts and help finalise the 37-21 result.

Lealiifano, who added the extras to Mafi’s try, was among the best for the CA Brumbies, organising the play well and controlling the ball with aplomb. The CA Brumbies flyhalf was backed up by McCabe and Andrew Smith who were standouts in the inside backs, with McCabe making several good runs in the CA Brumbies’ back field while Smith continued to make an impact on tour with his last 20 minutes off the bench.

Captain Stephen Hoiles led the way for his forwards in a solid performance typified by a high tackle rate and an ability to make ground in contact.

Lock Sitaleki Timani (shoulder) and scrumhalf Nick White (corked thigh) both sustained injuries during the match and are in doubt for the CA Brumbies’ next match against French Top 14 Champions, Perpignan on Saturday morning (AEST).

The Brumbies had a good win in their 3rd game. Even if Perpignan played their wanabees, a lot of the Brumbies are in the same category.

********************

The Brumbies have claimed the first scalp of their French tour, defeating reigning Top 14 champions Perpignan 17-0 at Stade Aimé Giral.

The win was built on an improved physical display and a phenomenal defensive performance with the visitors holding their hosts at bay throughout the match.

Leading 10-0 at half-time, the Brumbies were forced to defend their own line for the first 20 minutes of the second half - continually repelling wave after wave of French pick-and-drive of up to nine phases at a time.

The defensive achievement was all the more impressive with the side forced to do so with only fourteen men after scrum-half Josh Valentine was sidelined with a yellow card for an early scuffle.

The Brumbies started in emphatic fashion with outside centre Andrew Smith breaking through from the first line-out of the match. Smith was dragged down two metres from the Perpignan line with an infringement from the ensuing ruck giving fly-half Christian Lealiifano a straightforward penalty goal.

Patrick Phibbs extended the lead midway through the half when quick turnover ball inside the Brumbies' half saw the zippy scrum-half run 70 metres to score under the posts and give his side a 10-point advantage at the break.

Having survived countless raids on their own line in the opening stages of the second stanza, the Brumbies sealed the result 10 minutes from full-time when lock Ben Hand charged over under the posts.

Pat McCabe was a stand-out for the Brumbies in the breakthrough win. The Brumbies full-back was consistently strong in contact and highlighted his performance with a strong kicking game while the halves combination of Phibbs and Lealiifano moved the ball quickly and controlled the play well.

The forwards were well served by hooker Nathan Charles, prop Jerry Yanuyanutawa and flanker Colby Fainga'a, who shrugged off an early head knock to remain of his side's best.

Brumbies coach Tony Rea was proud of his side's ability to scramble in defence and said the tourists showed their true mettle against the French champions.

"The guys prepared well and had their heads on for what was a tough match," he said.

"We learned where we needed to be physically from the first two games and we were able to bully them on the ball and we were rewarded for it. We realised that we needed to win every collision for the 80 minutes, we did and we got the result.

"This tour has been a very demanding one.

"There's been a lot of travel, many sleepless nights and limited opportunities for training but tonight the team showed a lot of character. The tough times on the field moulded the team as a group rather than broke them."

However, the win has come at a cost with Alfi Mafi (suspected broken fibula) and Peter Kimlin (shoulder) unavailable for the final tour match against Toulon, while the fitness of captain Stephen Hoiles (knee) will be determined in the lead in to Thursday's fixture.

****************

That's bad news about Alfi but at least it's not the tibia. Looks like Pat McCabe of the mighty Rats had a top game but come home son; we need you. Looks like he is making a claim for a Brumbies bench spot, but let's see how he goes in the pre-season trials first.

The CA Brumbies have completed their four-match French tour with a 20-6 loss to Top 14 club, RC Toulon, at Stade Mayol this morning (AEST).

England's 2003 Rugby World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson was the chief destroyer for the home side, kicking four penalty goals before he was replaced in the 59th minute.

Wilkinson's chore was made easier with the CA Brumbies gifting a number of opportunities on the back of a problematic set piece. In total the ACT lost seven tighthead scrums and gave away an additional five free kicks on their own feed.

Wilkinson, who was without teammate Sonny Bill Williams for the match, took little time to impose himself, pushing a drop goal attempt wide in the opening minute of the match before landing a penalty three minutes later when CA Brumbies scrumhalf Nic White was sinbinned for a ruck infringement. The English flyhalf added three further penalties in the ninth, 52nd and 58th minutes before leaving the field midway through the second term.

In response the CA Brumbies could only manage a 37th minute drop goal through Christian Lealiifano with his side's malfunctioning scrum and lineout starving themselves of possession and field position throughout the match. Despite the significant set piece woes, the visitors had an opportunity to level the half-time scores at 6-all with flyhalf Matt To'omua pushing the penalty attempt wide from 35 metres out and in front as the half-time siren sounded.

Lealliifano, who covered flyhalf, centre and fullback during the match and was among the CA Brumbies best, added a penalty goal of his own in the 54th minute after a 40-metre bust by replacement fullback Pat McCabe.

RC Toulon landed another penalty goal in the 66th minute before pushing over for a try from a close-range lineout to close out the match with five minutes remaining.

McCabe confirmed his appointment as 'Player of the Tour' with another standout display and made the most of his limited chances in attack, predominantly through his ability to make ground on the back of his kick return.

The tour's other awards were won by Andrew Smith (Best Back) and Stephen Hoiles (Best Forward),
who along with lock Ben Hand toiled hard for the CA Brumbies throughout this morning's match. Flanker Colby Fainga'a continued the form that saw him take out 'Best Newcomer' and was again tough at the breakdown, played well beyond his 18 years of age and highlighted his match with a bone-rattling tackle on the opposing No.8.

Hooker Anthony Hegarty was the only injury concern out of the match with a suspected syndesmosis injury to his ankle.

The CA Brumbies finish the tour with one win over Top 14 Champions, USA Perpignan (17-0) alongside losses to CS Bourgoin-Jallieu (20-12), Aviron Bayonnais (37-21) and today's result against RC Toulon.

Despite this morning's loss, CA Brumbies Head Coach Andy Friend said the tour was a valuable learning experience for the playing squad and coaching staff.

"We're really happy [with the overall success of the tour]," he said. "We may have only won one out of four games but it's put us three months ahead of what we would've been if we didn't come on the tour.

"It proved to be a great chance for the squad to bond, particularly with the younger members, and the integration of these young players and the way in which they took their opportunities was a real positive.

"It was also a great chance to experience a different style of rugby and a different culture and it's given us a fantastic read on what we need to do to improve individuals as well as the team."

The side will return to Australia on Sunday.

Peter Kimlin insists the ACT Brumbies' French tour was a success despite returning to Canberra with a shoulder injury which could end his international season.

Kimlin could miss the remainder of the Wallabies' Tri Nations campaign and European spring tour if scans reveal serious nerve damage in his right shoulder.

A bruised and tired Brumbies outfit flew into the capital yesterday after its four-game trip to France.Kimlin injured his shoulder in a tackle in the Brumbies' 17-0 win against French champions Perpignan on July 31.

But the lock will not know how long he will be sidelined for until he has scans.

"At the moment I don't really know what the damage is until I get my results next Wednesday so I'll just have to wait and see," Kimlin said.

"It was pretty disappointing, I felt pretty good with my leg and even though it was my first game in six weeks I felt pretty good on the field as well.

"Hopefully it's not long-term damage and I don't miss too many games ... I try and take the best out of everything and this is the first time I've had back-to-back injuries in my career so I'll do the rehab and get back out there."

The 24-year-old made his Wallabies run-on debut against Italy in Canberra in June and is part of Robbie Deans's Tri Nations squad.

He missed the first two games of the Brumbies' tour after injuring his quad at Wallabies training last month.

The win over Perpignan was the Brumbies' sole victory on the trip, which also included games against Bourgoin-Jallieu, Bayonne and Toulon.

Kimlin was one of five injured players in the 28-strong squad.

Ankle syndesmosis will keep Alfi Mafi and Anthony Hegarty on crutches for the next four to six weeks, Sitaleki Timani has a grade one medial ligament tear and Uni-North Owls forward Tevita Metuisela has a season-ending knee injury.

Despite the casualty list, Kimlin said the trip was invaluable to the Brumbies' development.

Coach Andy Friend used the four games to test a variety of combinations for the next Super14 season. The trip gave Friend an opportunity to learn more about his fringe players.

"It was fantastic for experience and opportunity and it gave us a better idea of who can and who can't," Friend said.

The CA Brumbies have filled the last of their outside back positions with Andrew Smith joining the squad on a one-year rookie contract for 2010.

The Northern Suburbs utility back joined the CA Brumbies for their recent four-match French Tour and, after several excellent performances, was awarded Best Back for the tour and finished second – behind Pat McCabe – in the Player of the Tour poll.

Smith, who can play outside centre, wing and fullback, has previously represented the Australian Under 19’s and Australian Sevens squads in 2004 and was a member of the NSW Professional Academy in 2008.

The 24-year-old says he’s looking forward to becoming a CA Brumby in 2010.

“I’m very excited about next year,” he said. “There’s been a lot of talk about the potential at the Brumbies and I’m excited about being part of that success as well as joining great players like Rocky [Elsom], Stirling [Mortlock] and Matt Giteau in the squad.

“I tasted a bit of professional football at the Waratahs [Academy] last year and it was a goal of mine to work my way into a Super 14 squad. While Norths are struggling a bit this year I’ve tried to be more dominant and consistent in my footy, which I think I’ve done.

“I was hoping to use this season to be knocking on the door for a contract, I was fortunate enough to be selected for the [CA Brumbies French] tour and the next goal is to play Super 14 rugby.

“I felt very comfortable playing under Andy Friend and the Brumbies coaching structures while we were in France. I also had the opportunity to train in Canberra for a few days leading into the tour and I was impressed with the set-up and I’m just looking forward to starting next season.”

Smith joins a CA Brumbies outside back arsenal that already includes Wallabies Stirling Mortlock and Adam Ashley-Cooper, McCabe, Francis Fainifo, Alfi Mafi and Australian Under 20’s representative Afusipa Taumoepeau.

Head Coach Andy Friend says Smith’s signing adds to the significant depth within his backline ranks leading into the 2010 Investec Super 14 season.

“Andrew’s certainly got all the attributes to make it at the Super 14 level and I’d have no hesitation in using him next season,” he said. “He’s got excellent size and power, he’s got a good rugby brain and reads the game well and runs good lines, but he’s also got an aggressive edge and doesn’t shy away from the physical stuff.

“His form for Norths this season has been very impressive and he only enhanced his reputation with his performances in France.

“He fitted into the squad extremely well – it was hand in glove stuff. He’s the sort of player who gets on with things, works hard and trains hard and is very professional in his approach to his rugby.”

Smith joins flanker Henry Vanderglas as the two rookie contracted players for 2010.

A good club player and who knows - he may get on the park some day in the Super14 and shine.

These overseas tours by Oz S14 teams may seem to be fairly useless as they are too much before the Super competition the following year; but they can serve as a partial substitute for the ARC. One of the many purposes of the ARC was to serve as a filter wherein ordinary club players passed through, but players of substance were caught. The tour has caught Andrew Smith much as Will Caldwell was caught by the Tahs a few years ago on a tour of Argentina.

At least some mature players are being signed up now; the franchises must be running out out of schoolboy players to rob from the cradle.

Christian Lealiifano and Ed Stubbs celebrate their 2009 Tooheys New John I Dent Cup victory

The Tuggeranong Vikings have scored a converted try after full time to defeat the Queanbeyan Whites 30-28 in a sensational Tooheys New John I Dent Cup grand final at Viking Park this afternoon.

The match featured a thrilling final four minutes where the lead changed hands four times and a combined 17 points scored with Tuggeranong claiming the championship on the back of a Tim Curran try and Christian Lealiifano conversion.

Despite scoring three tries to the Whites’ four, the Vikings were kept in the match through the boot of Lealiifano, who sparked a number of attacking raids, set up the Vikings first try and was awarded the Dr Bob Smethills Trophy for man of the match.

Trailing 21-20 at the 76-minute mark, Lealiifano coolly slotted a 30-metre drop goal to give his side a two-point advantage before Whites outside centre Josh Goodall stepped through to score and give his side a 27-23 lead 30 seconds later.

Tuggeranong camped themselves in the Whites quarter for the final two minutes before the weight of pressure and possession took its toll and Curran found a hole in the defensive line to tie up the scores after the siren.

Lealiifano calmly slotted the conversion to give his side a two-point win and allow the Vikings to lift the Tooheys New John I Dent Cup for the first time since 2006.

The Vikings win was made more memorable given they were forced to do it with only 14 men for the final sixty minutes after prop Sione Taula received a red card for fighting. The scuffle also saw Goodall and his opposite number, Ed Stubbs, sin binned for 10 minutes.

While the Whites were seeking their first hatrick of First Grade titles since 1981-1983, Tuggeranong started stronger when Lealiifano jinked through the defensive line before linking with Stubbs, who raced through under the posts after three minutes.

Lealiifano added the conversion and a penalty goal five minutes later.

The Whites struck back on the back of Taula’s send off when Josh Hastings hopped over the line with the Whites skipper also slicing through on half time to send Jamie Marmont on his way to the tryline and give his side a 14-10 half time lead.

The Vikings wrestled back the ascendancy 10 minutes into the second term when Stubbs crossed for his second try after toeing through a Jake Knight charge down inside the Whites quarter.

Lealiifano slotted conversion to take a 17-14 lead before he was forced to defend it five minutes later when Queanbeyan scrumhalf James Stannard charged down the left hand touchline on a 60-metre run. Appearing set to cross in the corner, Stannard was denied by an outstanding cover tackle by Lealiifano.

While Lealiifano added another penalty goal, it wasn’t enough to deter Stannard who exposed some threadbare ruck defence to score at the 67-minute mark.

The win sealed a successful afternoon for Tuggeranong who also won the Colts, Third Grade and Fourth Grade titles, while the result gave coach Glen Christini an individual premiership hatrick after coaching Queanbeyan to their last two titles before joining the Vikings for the 2009 season.

Great Day of Finals. Intense games and great to see vikings get up in the last min.
couple of points:

- Bill Bowden had an awful game. Lost control of the game and his handling of the ruck became very one sided. At the 21min mark there was a huge brawl. He yellow carded 1 White and Viking player and then red carded a Viking. He should have taken the event into account. Sending a player off with 60min left is a big call. he wasn't the only one throwing punches.

- Colby Fainga'a. First look at the guy. Really physical at the break down. Very McCaw like. Very impressed by him. hope we see him at super 14 this year.

- Christian Lealiifano. Owned this game. He's a real match winner and Saturday was no different. Fantastic control and his defense saved a match winning try. He looks really good at 12. He plays a lot of clearly. By the looks of thing he made the right choice staying in canberra for his club rugby. Being close to friend all year has really helped him. pumped for 2010 now!

well done to the Vikings on the winning with 14 for most of the game was awesome courage!
