A nice rise in viewer numbers, if you believe the Instagram account.

Game one last year was Tahs v Reds on the main nine FTA channel, we have had no games near that this year, so I'm a bit sceptical of the claims

A bit confused by this Marly Manlins newsletter about the Shute Shield. They’re seemingly announcing a 1 year announcement with Stan, but at the same time they’re talking about DAZN and Foxtel and the benefit of them.

Are the announcing the deal which RA has negotiated? Are they now negotiating independently to RA, why is it 1 year when RA have reportedly negotiated 5? Why are they talking about competitor broadcasters when seemingly announcing a new deal with Stan?

Testing my memory here, but I think clubTV got the rights to Shute Shield for 10 years from 2016. RA then bought the rights off them for the Stan deal.

So the rights to Shute Shield might be ending in 2026.

Jamie Pandarin has an article late last year which got into it a bit

That's such great content from the Marlins, reminding us all that some Shute Shield clubs still can't see beyond their own picket fences.

Now: "We're into the 20th year of our 2 year plan for a few Shute Shield clubs to be the dominant force in Australian sport. We just need to throw off the shackles of RA and its short-sighted focus on second grade comps like Super Rugby and RWC. Soon we will be free!"

Nek minnit: "RA, you made $50 million from a Lions tour. Please send all of that to us immediately. We will be bankrupt next year."

If viewership is up 17% on FTA but we still aren’t cracking the top 30, then it must be pretty bad.
I saw this an couldn't help but laugh. Viewership is now 237 people... It's similar to people doing the mental gymnastics of thinking growth just continues at the same rate doesn't slow after initial uptake.

I'm glad it's gone in the right direction and it has definitely been the on field product pushing it. I'm now getting messages mid game from my Brother who stopped watching a couple of years ago. Rugby needs it's former watchers to come back first and foremost. The community that like Rugby as a sport is large but the local product was trash. Always baffled some that Schools games can crack 10k but the pros barely more... They're out there..

I had a thought the other day while watching the league and then a Super Rugby game and the intensity of the commentary is something that can hold you. Before people start ragging on league being dummies etc they call the games like a horse race and I personally do enjoy it and it can help a poor game stay engaging. The radio style of vocals going up and getting intense.

Dan Ginnane is quite good at it and obviously people like Rabs. I like Sean Maloney but we do have a more conversational style of commentary just above that of a Cricket game. I recall Gordon Bray being able to up the ante a bit and do it in that race call style.

That's true but has Rugby lost some of that Champagne Rugby type comments. We end up hearing Goog use this weeks phrase from his online MBA course instead of pumping up the play.
I think it was Tahs vs Force in the dying stages. Morgan Turinui and one of the others were making jokes about financial investments, and then someone mentioned how one paid off very well for Morgs a couple of years back.. That commentary just caught me as really odd and awkward, as it's shit topic to discuss to start with but Morgs went eerily quiet

Yeah, it offers no value and is low intensity dribble.

Burke has been really good though. He calls what he sees and doesn't seem afraid to call something crap when it is.

I still can't believe the CEO of RUPA is one of our full-time rugby analysts.

Like surely out of all the ex-players, there are some blokes who'd be good at it who aren't so heavily plugged into an important administration role.

And also surely he should be doing more RUPAing?

I would be highly surprised if the RUPA CEO was a full time job.
