Having it kick off after confusing him with Xzibit is just pure gold
Listening to their bender stories makes me think of that research paper that showed a correlation between successful athletes and risk taking. You're willing to repeatedly run into Joe Rokocoko, you're also willing to do a marathon after a straight 3 day bender then try and fight Busta Rhymes.

Just shy of 60K, or - about as good as the NRL was to Americans (not including those who watched on Stan Sport - those numbers are shrouded in secrecy)

This is outside the top 20 programs for the evening. These are some of the high quality programs Australians prefer to watch on FTA.

Could be worse. Could be getting A-League numbers. Somehow getting games on the 9 proper would surely bring in more viewers. Enough to probably crack the top 10. Surely.

Aus teams just need to keep being competitive and win - that will bring in the numbers.
I personally watch all my rugby on STAN which I find outstanding at the range of games / comps locally and around the world. Plus the 3-4 rugby shows each week now has got me hooked.

I watch on Stan as well. Would be good to know what those numbers are as well.

Qld v NSW on 24 Feb was on Nine main channel (at least in Qld and NSW) It came 25th on the night with 166k

I'm aware. Up against the Matildas which wasn't helpful considering the draw they've become. I was referring more to the competition for viewers last Saturday which was fairly dire in terms of content. And it still doesn't negate from the premise that getting more games on 9 proper would see those figures improve compared to being buried on Gem.

100% mate - by being on the main channel you see a larger "passive" audience than on the multichannels. Saturdays aren't a peak viewing time for networks and advertisers but it's a shame that networks would rather play movie re-runs than live rugby. I speculate one of the reasons is that the one game a week on FTA thing is Nine throwing RA a bone, and they would rather not cannibalise their paywalled STV product too much.

I think there is a bit of romanticising about what a difference more FTA exposure would do for the game. When has Super Rugby ever been a big free to air product?

In 2024 the sporting landscape in Australia is mostly streaming/pay tv based. The issue is more than we are stuck on a provider which is essentially single purpose.

There is no doubt more people would watch something if it was free.

I think the data over a long period of time though suggests that the incremental increase in viewers isn't significant enough to make it worthwhile to accept significantly lower broadcast deals to have more FTA exposure.

If there was a huge untapped market out there screaming for FTA rugby content we'd see it in test match FTA ratings.

RA made it a contractual part of the broadcast deal, and accepted less money from the broadcaster to get it on FTA.

Nine/Stan don't want us watching on FTA, they want us paying $30/month on Stan

Agree with everything you're saying there, but that's overcomplicating my point. I'm simply stating the fact that more people would more rugby if it was more freely available and more easily accessible (on main channels, not multis).

FTA TV exposure isn't the silver bullet we need for Australian rugby success rather than a nice consequence of it already being successful and popular.

Whether it's on the main Nine channel or GEM is irrelevant if no one is advertising it or directing eyes there. In it's current FTA format we are essentially chasing 'channel flickers' and they aren't a quantifiable or reliable market of people to try and capture.
