Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

The broadcasting of women's rugby and club rugby on Stan is definitely a substantial boost for the game even if we're not getting extra revenue for it.

And should be used as leverage if promoted correctly to increase inherent value

That's what happens with my TV, SuperSport Rugby from the time I get up Saturday until Monday. Channel does not change, just kids sometimes change the app in between.

Netflix would actually be an interesting option. They are running a trial of live sports broadcasting. Would be a pretty big reach in terms of audience.

It does that now, i went straight from the Brumbies game into the Reds game Sunday, I didn't have to turn it off. just pick the first game and leave it running

I actually love the STAN coverage and the bells and whistles that come with it. Christ I was watching about 10 Aussies running around in the Oxford Cambridge game. I thought the Supe Coverage was really good last weekend.

As comparison as to building an overseas audience. I'd suggest that of the 61k watching in the US - 95% were expat Australians.
Lets just call it for what it is - the Las Vegas govt shelling out to ensure planeloads of Aussies ( most of who probably hadn't been overseas before) pile into the casinos. Perhaps the fawning media can calm down now.

I don’t think Las Vegas shelled out anything to bring the NRL over. Buzz rothfield said on one of the pre game show that it hasn’t been cheap this venture but expects in year 5 that it will pay itself off for the NRL.

Not that we will see any figures. Vlandys and co will keep it close to their chest in case of blowback from grassroots

the NRL media is shouldering a lot of this growth. Some absolute brain dead takes from sin city last week.

Bulldog Ritchie (think he writes for daily telegraph) had an article yesterday about NRL expansion - Vegas being one of the teams (sorry PNG, Perth)

those tv numbers were atrocious. And a huge reality check that more work needs to be done in Sin City for the 5 year plan they got.

It's 6-8m per year which includes stadium rental but doesn't count the part the Clubs pay. It's not that much for them. Obviously it's a much bigger country but it's more viewers than reported for Super Rugby on Saturday. They also had 880k viewers on Fox League/Kayo.

See the crowd at the LA 7s? Not that good. Maybe 12-15k at best.

We need to not worry about what the NRL do. It's a different stratosphere to Rugby in Australia. If they get even a minor TV deal out of it they have done well. If they get themselves listed on gambling platforms, even better for them. We're having a laugh at their numbers all the while we have a team that could very well be gone in weeks and we can't/won't pay for them.

Vlandys directly said on-air during the broadcast, I believe for the first time, that with all of the sponsorships and the gambling revenue it makes the whole NRL Vegas venture a reasonably cost-effective exercise. Take that at face value of course.

To my knowledge it's the first time Vlandys has overtly mentioned the American gambling revenue as a big driver to entering the market.

If they get themselves listed on gambling platforms, even better for them. It's a small investment for creating a lot of positive attention at home, as well as any benefits they pick up from the US. It did seem to generate a lot of fans travelling from Australia. I'm guessing next year they'll be pushing the "NRL-approved travel packages" much harder.

not laughing at their numbers as such - just pointing out how hard it is to grow in other ( and local in the case of Aus rugby!). Rugby finds itself in the exact opposite to league. I.e massive global audience, struggling local one.

whilst I hate most things mungo and there is too much bad blood between them for it to work, but both games could benefit if they became the one entity, with 3 versions of the game under the one roof - NRL /RA - 7s, jail rugby and 15s.

It's not unfathomable to see a world where the NRL buys Super Rugby. They're assessing whether they are going to buy the Super League.

Found it interesting that the NRL numbers in the US were similar to those that MLS gets on Fox 1 in the US. Was also four times as much as any rating League has had previously when broadcast in the US on Fox 1. They have a 5 year plan and it'll be seen through. 200m in revenue is the target and at this point I give PVL the benefit of the doubt when he comes for something.

I'm not sure Super Rugby is anywhere near as "purchasable" as super league, not with the shared ownership model.

I say it with an understanding of it being ridiculous but if you wanted to theorise about dominating a market and even trying to get in the way of the AFL especially in the Private Schools....
