Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Might be a good target for RA to succeed Clarke. Would be a step down in pay but could be at least an outside chance.

Not sure, it was a a bit of a bizarre announcement for a company like 9 to make on the weekend, normally they would make it during trading hours. There might be a bit more to this situation.

There is talk about it being personal issues, there has been a fair bit of speculation about his relationships in the press recently. Nothing that would necessarily impact his ability to do his job or impugn his character, but stuff that still may have led to him making the decision to go. Apparently he emailed staff on Friday afternoon, so I guess they had to make the announcement today. There's definitely a lot more to come, but he's a guy that might normally be out of Rugby's league, as it stands right now they'd be crazy not to at least talk to him.

Today's Hurled reporting that Marks had stepped down because he had been in a relationship with a member of staff.

Hugh Marks resigns as CEO of Nine. Hopefully doesn't change anything, he was saying all the right things last week.

One of the front runners identified to replace him is Mike Sneesby, current CEO of Stan, who was pivotal in the rugby union broadcast deal and had this to say last week:

“Rugby Australia is making bold moves in the development of the sport – something that fits perfectly with what we do at Stan,” he said.

“This partnership with Rugby Australia will see Stan launch its live streaming capability in 2021, as we take Australian sports television into a new era. Through the combined audience reach and engagement across Nine’s television platforms, we are well positioned to bring Rugby Union to more Australians than ever before.”

I was impressed with Hamish McLennan on the Rugby Ruckus, seems like a very astute operator who doesn't suffer fools. Good chat about the situation going forward. Also a pretty frank discussion, didn't mince words.

Good point BR, I reckon Ian Foster may be available around July next year. Would be a good addition.

All jokes aside, top level coaches are used extensively in NFL coverage. Many commentators have to make a decision between that and coaching. Watching the breakdown throughout the year and the SKY coverage after the test on Saturday it was good to see Tabai Matson giving more indepth analysis.

More than the coaches, what we could use are the rugby analysts - generally the more tech guys advising the coach. Those blokes would be good in commentary.

Agree. With so many opportunities (QPR/SS aswell as SRAu/TT) they can try a few things, give more people an opportunity and see what works.

Plus someone with referee expertise on call, similar to the NFL. Might go someway to limit the appalling lack of knowledge around what the current laws actually are and how the laws of the game are applied under the annual guidance given to referees.

Not really for Australian broadcasts but I wont be at all surprised if Nigel Owens starts doing some commentary once he retires from reffing. Given he already has his own talk show it seems like a pretty natural fit.
