One promising sign is that the Reds were able to change their game plan from the last game against the Crusaders, that was something RG never seemed capable of doing.

Was very curious to watch, have heard of but never seen tens before. I have to admit I really don't get sevens. It is waaaay too much like touch footy.

Boy, what a difference between the two games, thank god. Still has the elements of what (I think) appeals to others about sevens, tho I don't honestly know what appeals, but enough of a similarity with the 15s to add so many more dimensions to the game. I guess ultimately that is what I don't like about sevens, so one dimensional. That one dimensionality basically puts it into the same bucket as league for me.

Why play checkers when you can play chess?

It is something that is often talked about, rugby is a game 'for all body types', as if that in and of itself is what is of value. But watching the tens brought home to me that having the fatties run around with the backs is a huge part of the variability of the game, just not writ as large as it is in fifteens.

With sevens, you don't need proper frontrowers, as there are no real scrums, so everyone has the same build and SBW as an example can 'play' frontrower. Well, what does that remind us of, backs playing as frontrowers because there are no real scrums in the game?

There is no way I could have watched as much rugby yesterday if it were sevens, my max is about ten minutes. I watched basically all of it and looking forward to today.

I think rugby backed the wrong horse with sevens, to the non rugby follower who (say) falls in love with sevens I simply cannot see them transferring necessarily to fifteens, the games are too dissimilar.

Fall in love with tens tho, and moving to fifteens is much more of a given.

So the question is, 'to the non follower which game would be more appealing, sevens or tens?' Obviously I feel tens is the far better game, but wonder what the real answer to that question is.

If you had the resources of World Rugby, ie at least a little bit of money, you could actually survey that and find real answers (sit down non followers and play them a game of sevens, then a game of tens, survey the results).

I bet it has never been done tho.

for me its the 15s and 7s. 7s is a specialist game with specialised players speed and fantastic athleticism/ ball skills using a whole field. This is fun to watch as long as players don't get injured for their Super Rugby teams

It's been a very entertaining weekend hiding from the heat watching some very entertaining games. We get to see a lot of 7s and 15s so I've enjoyed watching the teams improve as they get their heads around a different format. Also a lot of fringe players and up and comers get to show their wares.

This clown watched a different nines to the glimpses I saw:

The pedestrian, dumbed-down play the ball killed any "razzle dazzle" for me

I watched a fair bit of the Auckland 9s, and plenty of games had no razzle dazzle to speak of and many were tight low scoring affairs. There were some fantastic highlights from some games though, that Ponga still looks like a future star. That the article was written before the first day was half over says a lot.

I think it will also serve as a bit of a wake up call for some, basic defensive frailties, silly penalties and poor handling issues transcend both 10s and XV's

Well the Force monkeyed that up. With a handful of second half fade outs I hope this season isn't going to be the same at last season where we were only good for 50-60 minutes.

Thought I come on and register my thoughts on the tournament. I must say I've really enjoyed the comp and I hope it returns next year. Obviously the heat has been trying on the players and the attendance numbers (it's seriously way too hot to spend a day anywhere other than directly in front of the air-con) still the play has been super entertaining. Personally I've never been a huge fan of 7s just cause I feel it lacks a lot of the elements that makes the 15 man game so appealing, so I gotta say I find the 10 man format much more appealing.

Hard to read much from the teams ahead of the Super Rugby given that the format is so foreign (other than that the kiwi sides will probably be the pace setters again this year - no real surprise there) and there's not much on the line, but I was happy to see my Reds put in a decent effort and it was a good way to get excited for the start of the season.

I think it's a great pre-season concept. The rugby has been a bit scrappy, as you would expect, but the format is entertaining and I've loved the addition of Samoa, Toulon and the Wild Knights.

My only two issues are with ticketing and promotion. It's a nice rugby concept, not THE GREATEST SHOW ON TURF as it was marketed, with ticket prices to match. Tone that down a bit next season, and the balance will be perfect IMO.

Alł the talk about changing the value of a conversion and penalties in 15s is misguided. 10s shows the way. They should ban using any sort of equipment to take your kicks. Having drop kicked conversions doesn't detract from the spectacle at all.

To be fair I thought promotion and marketing wise they did some things right. I really liked the idea of throwing in some of the stars of yesteryear and attendance numbers look pretty decent given the temperatures we've had. the 7s tour took a few years to build up a good following so its not a bad start. As long as the event doesn't lose money I'm hopeful we'll see something similar next year.

Agree that they should maybe rethink how they tout the event. If it becomes a main stay I'd suggest they build it up more as a preview to the upcoming season. It's a chance to see the wide squad members introduce themselves to the fans so maybe profile some of the younger unknown talents that are staking a claim to a spot. I liked the interviews between the games with guys like George Smith and Moore and I'd maybe like to see more discussion about where teams are at, running throw the line ups for the upcoming season etc. Maybe do a "legends match" on the final day, with just retired players, or if youre going to do it at Suncorp again, maybe an allstar nsw v qld exhibit match thrown in there. There's various ideas they could explore.

My big recommendation for next year (if they do in fact decide to return to Suncorp) would be to consider making it a 3 day event. Do a 4 hour show on Friday night (cheap tickets - maybe $20) and then on Saturday start at 2:30pm and run through to 9:30pm. It makes the weather much more bearable and might help ticket numbers

I'm also still outrageously confused as to why they ran with 2x 4 team pools and 2x 3 team pools.

Would it really be so hard to field another two teams? I think it made the tournament sloppy and biased towards certain pools.

They could've done Premier Rugby Barbarians from QLD and Shute Shield Barbarians from NSW.

Or ITM Cup Barbarians and NRC Barbarians. Or Lloyd McDermott graduates. Or u20 Aus Barbarians, or u21 Aus Barbarians or ANYTHING of that ilk.

If they had a bunch of not-yet-professional QLD boys running around I'm sure it would've got all their families and friends along to see how they shaped up against the pros.

They just need to work on embedding the tournament into the community a bit better and including these sorts of teams would definitely do it.

Otherwise, I thought it was absolutely fantastic.

Theres nothing to really say outside of what others have already said - 10s is so so much better than 7s. All Aussie teams looked promising but we sent out a bunch of duds and I wish we'd taken it a bit more seriously (lord knows we could use the 1.6 million).

I liked the wildcard players but Samo, Walker and Tuqiri didn't help their teams chances much.

Walker was enthusiastic but just not quite up to it and Tuqiri and Samo were mentally enthusiastic but their bodies couldn't match it.

What a shot by Samo though. That more than made up for all of their involvements.

10s feels like very slow 7s rather than fast 15s.

I'll be taking a hard pass next year outside Rebels games, but I hope it builds to some sort of success, both for you blokes who enjoy it and for Australian Rugby in general.

Chiefs v Crusaders GF so if history is anything to go by if the Chiefs win I'll be the brunt of "witty" texts & FB posts from wifey's whanau who will go strangely quiet in the event of a Crusaders win........

I'm a bit concerned by the short turnaround between SF & GF, hope the players have enough left in the tank to produce a decent match.
