I have never believed Diggers is the complete winger or even OC but what he is good at can be match-turning, and when he's good at it, he's extraordinarily good.
That is very good.
When Digby was at the Force he was a limited player, a brilliant runner but not much more. He was particularly deficient in being the assistant fullback on those occasions when he had to cover when the 15 had to go up the field or to the other side of it.
He was not a lot better when he was in the Wallabies in those days. I remember an occasion, it was against Wales on an EOYT, must have been in 2008, when he dropped an inside pass from Giteau with the line open to him.
Anyone can drop a catch, but the point is that I remember not being surprised that he did it, such were his patchy handling skills then. Then towards the end of the game he took a miracle ball near his ankles to score a try and give the Wobs a chance to win.
He was already with the Reds then, and I had a mental
"not a good footie player" asterisk against his name, but he became a better player after that: not 3 dimensional, but not 1 dimensional either.
We can't expect Diggers to be giving too many golden balls or even silver ones, but he is a better ball player than when he was out west.
Are these deficiencies acceptable in a match turner? Damn right.
