Damn... its for the best tho.

I have this horrible feeling this could be devastating in years to come for the wallabies. 4 of our great playmakers (not including giteau) have backgrounds playing league and it is debatable whether they will hang around. Beale and QC (Quade Cooper) seem very likely to go to league, Barnes is unfortunately not well and JOC (James O'Connor), although being the least likely to leave he could end up anywhere having played League & AFL as a kid and attracting huge offers from o/seas.

I know others will step up, but I will be very bitter to miss out on a Golden Era.

Sorry to sidetrack. I really hope Barnes comes back better for the time off.

Well, Barnes has a better league pedigree than any of those - perhaps shows the class of the guy that "offers from league" don't seem to have come up during negotiations with him as much as with some others. I still think it's unlikely either Beale or QC (Quade Cooper) will take a pay cut to go to league any time in the future.

I not in mourning just yet. He hasn't retired and he may still come back and get a RWC gig. I'll save the flood of tears until he hangs up the boots.

Get well soon Berrick. We supporters of different franchises rarely agree on anything, but one thing we seem to all agree on is the need for you to sort yourself out. And we all support you.

See you back in Gold soon.

Beale won't play league. QC (Quade Cooper) might. It's not like he grew up dreaming about being a Wallaby. For him it's probably just another notch in the belt that will one day include an start for Queensland Origin, League Test Caps, big bikkies in the Northern Hemisphere and (if Nasser has anything to say about it) an obscure boxing title.

Let's all pray that QC (Quade Cooper) has more brains than that.. how many head knocks has he taken again?

Bad news, but correct decision for Berrick. Health got to come first, but I agree a class player and will be missed.

What will you do if he never plays again HodgoBerro? You can't have a Barnesy's Army without Barnesy.

I think he'll be right after a month or two off - hope so anyway.

Unfortunately I think it's only a matter of time. Looks like Elton Flatley all over again. I really and truly hope I am wrong and he can get treatment and come back but the fact he is getting them so regularly it's hard to see how he can come back.

Like I said hope I am wrong but whatever the outcome I hope BB goes on to do well at whatever is next!

I have to say, I hate Barnes with a passion (For being a traitor and playing for the Tahs) but it's still sad for to see this happen to anyone

It appears not to be a result of head knocks/concussions according to the articles I've read... which must be a positive. Clearly from I've read in the main stream media this is not another Elton Flatley.
Today I read that he is getting migraines/dizziness etc from 'physical exertion'... and although not medically trained I see this as a positive in some ways because it could be a simple as an imbalance in his diet/inadequacies in certain minerals or vitamins etc etc.
Hopefully with the level of medical science available to him, they will be able to find the problem and then fix it/correct it. And Barnes will get through the 'psychological issues' related to it, as he's a determined professional athlete.
Best wish to him... I'm confident they will get to the bottom of this and sort it out.

Guys - I'm starting to think I've got a guy who might be able to help Berrick. Does someone know the best way to contact him? Stick it here or PM me. Cheers.

Mate, if you believe that, you will believe anything.

I previously worked as an ED doc in an inner Melbourne city hospital. We used to see many AFL players with concussion both professional and amateur. We'd routinely tell patients one thing, then go listen to the news that night and hear the PR guys telling the cameras a completely different story.

The evidence for long term effects of concussive injury are still under debate, there simply haven't been many conclusive studies because it requires decades of follow up. But one of the largest and most concerning was this from the US was this, which basically said even a single concussion may be enough to cause late effects.

Honest truth is if Barnes walked into my rooms today, I personally would tell him to hang up the boots. Your brain is just too god damn precious to take chances with.

Fair enough mate...just out of interest, are you suggesting the ARU etc would not reveal the truth as they are worried about mums stopping kids from playing? Or suggesting Barnes and his team are in denial?
Obviously any studies that suggest long term problems associated with concussions would not be a good thing for leauge/union or afl in this country. Perhaps what Barnes needs to someone to sit him down and tell him straight because from the media reports it all seems to be being downplayed.

Good point there.
I spoke to berrick just before the Waratahs vs Chiefs game back in April and although it was (personally) tough to say would he hang up the boots in the near future

Bear in mind this was the week after he'd been knocked out for a second time and was told to take a month off by medical staff.

At that time he still wanted to continue.

He wants to play footy and be good at it.
