Oh yeh totally agree - and with the increasing frequency of these weather events over the past 15 years, any significant infrastructure investments in flood areas definitely need to be considered. The way the point is worded though makes it seem like they're expecting a flood during the games.

I'm really not sure where people think that ground for community sporting venues will be found in Brisbane if not the flood plains. It's actually a reasonable land use plan for that space. I would think that what the groundsmen do to prepare for and recover from flood - well that aught be an art form here.

I’m sure the City of Gold Coast tax payers are excited for more money to be spent on sporting facilities after the Comm games.

I’m curious, is the plan to have multiple events outside of Brisbane? I read somewhere that a discussion was happening to have rowing up in FNQ. Seems ridiculous

Many events are in regional centres - Maryborough to host archery, Toowoomba equestrian, Rockhampton rowing, Cairns and Townsville football.

Don't hate it tbh, as it's mostly leveraging/expanding existing professional hubs/infrastructure. It's not like expanding events to outside the host city is uncommon for the Olympics.

Technically I believe it was always supposed to be SEQ with some water sports outside of that area but I was surprised to see the rowing up there. We are assured that the crocs are only freshwater ones which is no doubt very reassuring to all.

Haha, not at all! It's the Fitzroy isnt it? It is a recognised aquatic pastime area in the fresh but they had to remove a 4m croc last year. I think it's perfect for international news coverage. "Bring in the croc expert!" Laconic strine follows: "Nothing to worry about, mate, we got most of 'em. They don't hunt in the deep water so you are fine as long as you don't draw lanes 1 to 3"

Don't get me started on the rowing - the single sport I was most excited to see at the Olympics.....

Report recommended Sydney over Wyaralong or Rocky (everyone seems to forget Wivenhoe) but because Qld don't like giving anything to NSW (fair enough) we're hosting the rowing in the Fitzroy River which whilst being an awesome rowing course is also full of crocs.....

It feels like a potential clusterfuck to be honest. A lot may come down to scheduling and interest in some of those events, but football in Townsville is leaving a lot of money (and opportunity to see the games) on the table, and broader Queensland infrastructure is not necessarily equipped for a lot of movement of people if the attending fans are really touring around. Having single sport locations really sucks for the athletes as well, they lose out on support from the team and the ability to support the team at a lot events.

Yeah agreed there's enormous clusterfuck potential, and that many of the decisions seem half-baked (although unfortunately not surprising). Football in particular is a bizarre one given the national interest generated by the Tillies over the last 12mo, and the availability of a 50k seat stadium right in the heart of BNE...

Bet the QLD Gov wish they had the last 3.5 years since the announcement back. Imagine the works that could have been started and the scope of works that could have been completed in 9 years as opposed to 5 when you consider all the planning, tendering, demo, construction, commissioning, rectifications, trial events....

I read a post from someone who's daughter rows in Rocky and the river is not tidal where they row - there's a barrier or something. Wasn't interested enough to read further.

They've only got themselves to blame - they spent the 3 of those years in opposition wrecking havoc on the process. As an aside they're going to have seriously consider pausing new mine approvals over the next 5-10 years, they'll have a hell of a time getting anything done if they're competing for labour on unrelated infrastructure projects when there's already a national shortage.

Yes, apologies, I'd forgotten it was upstream of the barrage - regardless, still pretty big concerns about flow and other suitabilities of the venue. I've heard that the rowing bodies still reckon Sydney will end up being the final decision, which I'm sure will go down well.
