I think JOC (James O'Connor) was in the same situation, but correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe Esei has only just turned 18, so most likely the reason.

Also, hes change of attitude to embrace the professional pathway has transformed his overweight glumness frame to a slick and streamlined athlete who will make an immediate impact and transition into super rugby much faster as has been the case.

SELECTION INFORMATION FOR AUSTRALIAN TEAMS FOR 2017

SELECTION PROCESS AND GUIDELINES FOR 2017
–for Australian Schools Rugby Teams
Players must meet the selection eligibility as set out in the ASRU website– specifically– in regards to age –being Under 18 this year –and being in full time school attendance or an equivalent.
The ASRU Championships are the principle platform for selection.
The Australian Schoolboys, Australian Barbarian Schoolboys and the Combined States Team are selected formally by the 3 selectors appointed by the Australian Schools Rugby Union.
The selectors are –
Adrian Thompson – ARU High Performance Pathways Manager and Chair of Selectors.
Pat Langtry- Head Coach Australian Schools
Andrew Maloney – elected appointee.
The Australian selectors consult many stakeholders as part of the selection process including school coaches, State coaches, referees, Academy staff, ARU staff and assistant coaches of ASRU teams. Extensive game codings, video reviews and State Coach interviews (during the Championships ) are also part of the resources accessed.
Other factors such as the nature of opposition teams, team balance, player attitude, core skills, safety, medical clearance and proven ability and performance at the Championships are part of the process.
Players who are not participating in the national championships can be considered for selection in one of the two national schools teams if they are available, but precluded from playing because of injury or serious misadventure.
Players who choose not to play for their State Team, if selected, will not be considered for national selection unless it is because of injury or serious misadventure. Such cases need appropriate evidence, documentation and medical checks by ASRU Doctors.
Selection Dates and Process for 2017

1. Two squads of approximately 20 players will be announced at the Presentation Assembly on the Finals day –Saturday 8th July –of the National Championships which are being held at Riverview College in Sydney from 2nd to 8th July
2. An additional 3 players will be added to each squad by the Selectors based on post Championships observations by around the third week of August.
3. These squads are for the first two games of the Tri Nations series. These games include an internal trial games between the Australian and Barbarians Teams.
4. Both of the Australian teams will be re-selected for the final games of the Tri Nations after the games on October 2nd
5. These two teams will assemble in Sydney on 24th September and stay in camp together until the final games on 7th October at Knox Grammar School. Players injured in camp or in games do not normally stay with the team
6. The following eight Division 1 Teams will be participating in the Championships—2nd to 8th July at Riverview College, Sydney–

—ACT, Victoria, Western Australia, Combined States, NSW 1 , NSW 2 , Qld 1 , Qld 2.

1. The Combined States Team is selected from any State where players have not been selected in their State team, if it is participating in the Division1 Championships.
2. Players from the Division 2 States –NT , SA and Tasmania–will also be considered for the Combined States Team through the trial process which will be used in each of these states.

It appears there has been some significant changes to the selection process since the trials last year.

It will be interesting to see what occurs as a result of this new structure.

The ARU has come under much scrutineer from the rugby community as of late. The obvious trigger appears to be the failure of our Super rugby franchises to compete with our kiwi neighbours and now the rumblings an Ozzie franchise will be dropped..
Now the ARU allegedly are withdrawing their financial support of Australian School boys tour of Europe (occurs every 4 yrs)in 2017.
Is the tour still going ahead? I also did hear(un reliable source ), the ARU dont really give that much to ASRU anyway.
Anyway, there are some very healthy competitions amongst the 2017 cohorts for positions. The incumbent players from last year's schoolboys and baa baas and the emerging pack makes for some very exciting 'trials' in the state selections.

Obviously the boys are U18, but are many at school and thus eligible for Schoolboy sides?

Hopefully a few get picked in the NSW teams and we start taking step to welcome more non-private school students into our game.

Agree they are organised a lot earlier this year which is terrific and gives the boys a good experience of coaching and development.

This team is made up of boys who are ineligible for State Champs as NSWJSC finish at U17. A Sydney U17 team will be selected from the State Champs in U17 Age Group

These U18 boys would most likely come from those in year 12 turning 18 or boys who have left school but qualify by age.

Most are not playing Sydney Junior Rugby Union but have been drawn from the Colts system.
