I have not read anywhere that JGS players will receive a grant of $660. That is the cost that each player must pay as far as I know.

Admittedly before reading the article 'your understanding' was mine. After reading the article I was actually quite relieved that the ARU were not going to potentially marginalise prospective talent for reasons of impecuniousity!

So my initial understanding was correct? Pay to play? I'm somewhat somber now!

What a profound piece of journalism! It emphatically strikes at the very heart of the problem!

What I liked most about the piece was the neglect of our junior pathways in the last five years; because Moeroa and Milne are only the one's we are losing this year, what about the other unmentioned losses from the past 5 years?

For example I was watching the Broncos v Bulldogs game in Holden cup several weeks ago and saw no less than three ex-State rugby reps playing; Paia'aua (QLD I/2011), Palau (QLD I/2011), Morgan (NSWSRU/2011). I know LG, myself and many notable others had big wraps on Paia'aua back then!

Good to see the ARU is no longer going to leave it just to schools!
Why can't Rugby copy what League does ? Can't Sponsors Pump $$$$ to Recruiting Talented Players, Contract them and Develop them to the Top Sides and have a Better Marketing Plan as well. Just Disappointing. Something needs to be done. These aren't the only boys, plenty in the past as well.
These are the boys who are playing NRL

Tepai Parramatta ( Newington ) Australian Schools Rugby Union
Milne Sydney Roosters ( Newington ) Australian Schools Rugby Union
Lussick Parramatta ( Newington ) Australian Schools Rugby League
Taylor Manly Sea Eagles ( St Augustine ) Australian Schools Rugby League.
(Taylor has been playing all season in the Starting Side U20s. Holden Cup.)

They would but there is no money left after they pay of the past debts accrued when it was ARU policy to convert has-been league players to rugby for millions of $$$$$$$$!

Alas enough of this subject, we got some exciting international schools tests coming up!

I'll remain sceptical until all the pathways come to fruition. An under 20s comp for 5 franchises hardly is the type of comp to keep all the talented juniors post school. Oh and the fact they will play for free will not, I believe have the NRL shaking in their boots.

Rated both Paia'aua and Morgan although Morgan never gained the kudos in union he deserved no doubt playing (albeit spasmodically) in weaker CCC teams impacted on this.

Of these I believe only Tepai and Taane will progress further both have genuine chances in both codes and obviously union do hold a hope for both.

Don't Agree at, all these Boys will Progress to the top, ( Taylor is already training with Manly Sea Eagles 1st grade ) these boys are all talented in their Own Right, they all have a League Background which also helps in their Defence ( Tackling ) Tepai, Taylor and Milne have Speed and Strength, all play Outside Backs Tepai can play in the forwards, so very easy for all of them fitting into Union and all of them are Best Buddies I hear and great Kids.

NSW Country Schools Squad for game vs Fiji
Source:http://www.rugby.com.au/tryrugby/News/NewsArticle/tabid/1760/ArticleID/10242/Default.aspx

1. Jayden DALEY Merewether HS
2. Sam DICK Lindisfarne Grammar (Captain)
3. Lachlan McCORMACK The Armidale School
4. Cody GRAHAM O'Connor Armidale
5. Jordon SHEATHER Macksville HS
6. Tommy GILBERT Dorrigo HS
7. Angus McDOUGALL Trinity College (not in the squad list on the ARU Web site but omission is probably a typo)
8. Jackson GILBEY The Armidale School (Vice Captain)
9. Zach HYATT McAuley College
10. Will FROST The Armidale School (mentioned in the article but not in the squad list)
11. Matthew NOTT Narrabri HS
12. Jeb FREEMAN Bishop Druitt College
13. Sam HARRIS Newcastle Grammar (not in the squad list on the ARU Web site but omission is probably a typo)
14. Jack ARTHUR Hunter Valley Grammar
15. Ben BUTLER Wyong Christian

16. Cameron McNAMARA LKS Grammar
17. Nathan PICKERING Nowra Anglican College
18. Sam ELLERTON Cainys College
19. Arek WERSTAK John Paul College
20. Jake HARRIS McAuley College
21. Ryan PRENTICE McAuley College
22. Ian RANGER The Armidale School (new addition)
23. Lachlan MACK The Armidale School (new addition)

This squad listing is based on the team list from the NSW Open Schoolboys programme.
The squad list in the article on the ARU website appears to leave out 3 boys despite one of them being mentioned in the article, so I conclude that this omission is a typo. Jumper numbers are taken from the Open Schoolboys Team list back in June.

The Squad appears to be almost identical to that from the School Champs with no supplementation from the country lads in ISA, CCC, CHS or AICES.

Pretty impressive scoreline from the Bula Boys.

Clearly the weather was not cold, wet and miserable enough to play to our advantage.:)

Fiji def Country schools 74-12 (or thereabouts)

After 10mins it was 12-10, looked like it could be a good day for country.
Fiji's bigger overall size kicked in, as to the final score, Fiji down about 15 points in missed kicks!
Country had some good runs up the middle using their big forwards, and through the centers, country No10 probably their best. Fiji created a lot of loose/turnover ball at the tackle. Plenty of nolook, pop and roundthecorner passes. Fiji's No7 (and captain I think) was best, hard to pick others as they ran all their reserves and at one stage there was three No8 jerseys on the pitch. Their No11 is big & fast, but regularly ran himself out of space.
Unfortunatley no programme or team lists, bring on next Friday, Tue 1st and Sat 5th.

Bad Luck Country Boys. You don't want those Big Fijians Backs getting the ball, keeping it in the forwards.

A light distraction from the AAGPS issues.

Around the nation, in Cairns, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, 23 boys (and their families) selected for the Australian Schoolboys are nervously going through their final arrangements for their travel into Camp on Friday in preparation for next weeks games vs Fiji and New Zealand.

Rest assured there will be no airport shenanagans or discourteous behaviour from these fine lads.

Any aspiring Homebrand boys will be disappointed to learn that there is a 10pm "in bed with lights out" curfew while in camp, and mobile phones and ipods are to be turned off during formal functions and meetings.

Key timings:
27 September 2pm Everyone is on camp at Knox Grammar
1 OCtober 12:30 kick off in Aust A vs NZ Schools
1 October 14:30 kick off in Aust Schools vs Fiji U18
5 October 15:00 Kick off Aust A vs Fiji Schools
5 October 17:00 kick off Aust Schools v NZ Schools

I've just noticed that there are several changes to the Oz A Schools team now on the ASRU website that differ from the team selected.

Some changes have already been discussed but others are new to me.

Some must have failed a medical after the tournament, because the report is dated 9th July - though it is possible that they changed the names without changing the date. Must have, come to think of it, because some withdrawals were recent.

Anyway:

Out: 9. Joey Lussick — In: Mitchell Douch (St. Edmunds)
Out: 10/15. Adrian Delore — In: Patolo Toeta (Melbourne Grammar)
Out - 10. Carlin Anderson — In: Jack Clancy (Shore)
Out: 13. Landon Hayes — In: 14. Campbell Magnay(Nudgee)
Out: 15. James Todd — In: Josh Bowen-Bowyer (BBC)

I've have paired them up, though obviously some of these players are not direct swaps.
.

Some later changes:
Looks like Matt Sandell (Joeys) has withdrawn and been replaced by Evander Guttenbeil from TSS.
Nathan Kelly (View) has been added to the Aust A's.
