And that was without two of their best players. I'm told that two of the aborigine boys on scholarships were allowed to go back to Walgett to play for their local rugby league team in some kind of final. They had played for them since they were nippers before they went to Joeys.
Yeah it was unusal for Ticehurst to mention individuals as it goes against the ethos of Joeys. I don't think co-coach Boydie would have. And from a rugby point of view: if Joeys teams have done well it's the blue heeler work of 8 forwards that has been their strongest point, despite having stars from time to time.
The current team doesn't have a lot of stars, as representation in rep teams will attest, but they are playing a lot better since I saw them in the trials.
8 Plunkett who had been playing lock in the trials and lock Jollye had good games in the forwards, as mentioned, but they weren't the Lone Rangers. 1 Liam McGrath, son of the Brumbies chairman, Peter, had a top game. He finished strongly in the Oz Schools tourunament recently and has kept that form going.
The backs look better too after dropping a few balls early, and this is despite William Meakes being out for the season. It looks like a masterstroke to replace him in the backline with Adrian Ha'angaha who was playing 8 for the U/16s last year (and I think is still eligible for them this year). He's a big unit with a good right foot step and a deadly offload.
He played 12, and with Meakes injured Toole moved out to 13. He had a cracking game too and outside centre seems to suit his long striding style.
Ha'angaha is a junior league player so I hope that he can stay in our game after he leaves school. He needs to lose some weight but apart from that looks the part.
In the trial games I saw this year Joeys didn't look like title contenders. Now they do.
